SOLVED. Classic YA - Mystery around what a group of boys did to a girl at school. [s]

I flicked through this book earlier this year in a collection of classic YA. The book was by an American author (I think it was an with three names - I thought it was Norma Fox Mazer but I couldn't later find it in her bibliography). I think it was published between 1960s-1980s.

The story was about some mystery that happened at the local high school. A group of 3 or 4 boys had been teasing/bullying a female classmate and finally did something that went too far. The book was about the repercussions of what they did - the girl trying to get justice, how uncomfortable it made the teachers, whether the boys would get any sort of punishment, the idea that she was overreacting, etc. I don't think readers ever get to find out exactly what happened.

I think it was mostly told from the point of view of one of the boys who felt guilty about what they'd done.
