During a fierce snowstorm in Saddlestring, Wyoming, game warden Joe Pickett finds the body of a forest service supervisor pinned to a tree with two lethal arrows. This is just the beginning of a harrowing winter for Pickett, his family and the residents of Saddlestring. Someone is targeting federal officials and a group of survivalists called the Sovereigns have set up camp in the local national park. A self-important Forest Service chief, Melinda Strickland, has decided to make the survivalists her scapegoat for the murder and she is determined to have a showdown that will rival any other gun battle between federal troops and anti-government believers. Along with Pickett's frustration with the escalating situation, his foster daughter April has been reclaimed by her mother and they are in the midst of the Sovereign campground. Joe's only recourse is to find the murderer on his own and prove to Strickland and her backers that they are dangerously close to making a fatal mistake.
I really enjoy this series featuring Joe Pickett and the wild environment of Wyoming. He is a likeable hero who certainly has his flaws. The love for his family is endearing and the story is full of interesting characters. I look forward to the rest of the series.
