Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 112 comments Thank you for the suggestions. I thought I had A Time to Kill, but can't find it. I do have The Chamber, The Partner, The Testament, The Brethren, and The King of Torts.

I now remember why I can't find A Time to Kill. I read it and passed it along to a friend.

Shirley J (fastreader) | 28 comments I'm hopeful of one of our librarians can help me out, especially if one of your book clubs has already discussed this book.

Finding a list of discussion questions for this book hasn't been successful:

Time and Again by Jack Finney.

Sadly, the "ask a librarian" option on my library's consortium website has been removed.

Looks like the NYPL has some on their blog https://www.nypl.org/blog/2013/07/08/time-and-again-jack-finney-discussion-questions.

Michele Johnson | 11 comments Hello Librarians!

I'm hoping you can recommend a book to fulfill the "ask a librarian for a recommendation" prompt!

I just finished The Nightingale. Loved it. The previous book I read was I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella. Some of my favorite books are Gone With the Wind, The Red Tent, Cold Sassy Tree, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Help, Little Bee, The Deep End of the Ocean, Christy, Memoirs of a Geisha, Map of the World and all the Harry Potter books.

That being said, I also enjoy lighter reads to give my emotions a break.

What can you recommend?

Thanks!

Michele

Hi Michele - sorry for the delayed response! Based on your favorites (which seem to share a through-line of historical fiction, a Southern/rural setting, a strong sense of place, and generally impressive writing), I'd recommend Ellen Foster, Homegoing, and The Chaperone. (On the lighter side, I just enjoyed Hello, Sunshine, which is out next month!).

Michele Johnson | 11 comments Thank you for the recommendations! I have read Ellen Foster but will check out the other titles. Thanks again!

Asia_k | 56 comments Hey librarians,
I could use some suggestions for the first prompt of the challenge! I would like to broaden my reading horizons a bit and read some books written by authors from South America / Asia / Africa / Scandinavia.

What do I like to read? Witty books (i.e. 'A man called Ove' and 'the hundred-year-old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared'). I think generally I enjoy fiction, I've read 'Americanah' and 'All the light we cannot see' and rated it pretty high. I'm not that keen on thrillers, horrors or detective stories. Historical Fiction or just general fiction is fine. Some classics not written in English would also be appreciated.

I like John Steinbeck, John Irving, Terry Pratchett, Sue Monk Kidd, Jane Austen, Tove Jansson's and Alice Munro's stories among others :)

Can you please recommend me a book?

Michelle Rittmann (mlrittmann) | 11 comments Looking for a new author or two to check out. I prefer serieses to one-off books but my tastes are very varied. Right now, what I'm aiming for is somebody clever, quirky, and humorous without trying too hard. Absolutely love Jasper Fforde and have already read everything he's written. Read everything by Neil Gaiman and most of Christopher Moore's and Douglas Addams' stuff. Other top favorites include the Unwind Dystology by Neal Shusterman, Ready Player One, and The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. I lean towards Sci-fi/fantasy/YA but not LOTR or Potter. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! (Cross-posted to YA and Sci-Fi)

You were asking about books from other countries and I remembered seeing this post recently. Check it out for some possibilities. https://creators.vice.com/en_us/artic...

Thanks a lot, Nina! I've seen the map before, but I forgot about it and haven't looked for the full list of books. I see there some titles that I had on my TBR list, so I might choose one of those! Cheers!

/edit/
I've done quick research and I found the list of the books copied from reddit and changed into listopia list, if anyone else is interested: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Alix Boyer (alixboyer) | 9 comments Hello! Anyone care to give me a quick Rec or two? It would be great to not have to buy a book for this one since my TBR shelf is currently overflowing as usual. A few titles on there that I feel like reading this year are:

The God of Animals by Aryn Kyle
Quiet by Susan Cain
The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley
The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan
The Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan
The Guernesy Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Spades by J Raymond
The Empty Boat by Osho
The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer
Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Quiver by Stephanie Spinner
Mostly Harmless by Douglas Adams (HHGTTG #3)

Feel free to recommend more that one!

Eric Wilhelm | 2 comments I'm down to my last challenges and I haven't gotten a recommendation quite yet. I'm looking for something along the dark humour and satire lines. I love Vonnegut and Heller, and I've read the first two Diskworld books. Thanks!

Jasper Fforde might interest you. His Thursday Next series is metafiction, but has a Pratchett-esque tone.

message 167: by Rhoda (new)

Rhoda | 30 comments Years ago I read a book that was given to me on Librarians Day at the RWA conference in Orlando, but I can't remember the title. I would like to read other books by the same author, so does this sound familiar to anyone? Paranormal romance where an older witch and warlock couple are banished to a small town to be the guardians of the local woods which house a fire-breathing dragon that likes to play poker with the raccoons. The couple ends up match-making to several of the local residents of the town. Anyone have an idea of what book I'm talking about? I donated the copy that I had to the local public library and I no longer live in that area. Help!
