I read the detective novel Charcoal Joe by Walter Mosley for a book club and realized it would work for this task. The detective, Easy Rawlins, is pretty much the only "point of view character," and he's African American.

I didn’t slot it in here but I can’t recall why. It may be that I thought the boyfriend was too much a part of the narrative and he’s white.
