I used a short story collection for this task: Things We Lost in the Fire by Argentinian author Mariana Enríquez. If you like dark and disturbing, then I can highly recommend this collection!

Is The Spy set in Central/South America? I thought it is in Paris. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I finished The General in His Labyrinth by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It is set in Venezuela and is about the last few weeks of Simon Bolivar's life. It was marvelous - beautiful writing.

I have read City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende that I think also qualifies for this prompt as it primary takes place in "the remote wilds of South America" (aka the Amazon).

I'm reading Like Water for Chocolate. My original plan was One Hundred Years of Solitude, but I just kept putting it off to the point where I eventually lost interest.

I read Blood Of The Dawn by Claudia Salazar Jimenez. The author is Peruvian. The book was about the Shining Path insurgency. It was hard to read sometimes as it jumped from character to character, but it was all tied together by the end.

I didn't remember the details of this challenge correctly, so the book I read doesn't qualify: The Story of My Teeth by Valeria Luiselli. She's from Mexico, and that's where the book is set. It's terrific, though, and no regrets for reading it "by mistake." I'm now considering either Daniel Alarcon's At Night We Walk in Circles or Isabel Allende's Ines of My Soul.

If people are still looking for recommendations, I just finished reading The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao (set in Brazil) and loved it! It was a quick read but really stays with you.

This is my last topic for this year's challenge. I started Perla, but I'm having a hard time getting into and I don't think I'm going to finish it. I can fit it in next year though.

Any recommendations for something that would fit this category that's a short, quick read? Like less than 100 or pages? Maybe middle grades like Michelle asked for?
