There was some quite effusive praise of the 1941 film adaptation of Stevenson's story starring Spencer Tracy at Brunch & Lit. One attendee gave the movie 4.3 out of 5 stars. The actual book faired less well with an average star rating of 3.25 out of 5 stars. Personally, I am struck at the strength of Stevenson's short novel in our current culture, its immediacy of brand recognition and its number of adaptations to film, stage, music, and conversational idioms. Not a great story to read for the holidays, but cold and gloomy February is just around the corner, if you get my drift. (Pun intended)
