Seana | 2 comments Hi, I've recently become a Goodreads librarian and I am still trying to get the hang of it -- and I'm not entirely sure about a few things, including what information should be in English and what should be kept in the edition language.

I was told that all information should be in the language of the edition but later found out that book formats and characters/awards (which are consistent for all editions of a book) should be in English. So should the publisher be in English as well?

Also with characters -- if, for example, only 2 books have been translated out of a long series, should the characters from book 3 onwards be kept in English or in the original language? In that case can characters be linked together?

It would be helpful if these things could be added to the librarian manual as well :)

Thank you!

Sandra | 31482 comments Publishers are usually in the language of the edition. They are proprietary names and as such wouldn't necessarily be translated.

Never thought of characters as they are basically an optional extra.

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments Characters I would suggest keeping in the original language, whatever that may be. If necessary because they are wildly different, add them again in the second language. But, as Sandra says, they're an option part of the record, so if in doubt I'd not bother :)

Seana | 2 comments Thank you both -- I know I'm probably overthinking some of these things, but I didn't want to screw anything up. Thanks again! :)
