Thank you all for the fantasy suggestions. I think I will go with the "Golem and the Jinni" because the word golem keeps popping up in a Chaim Potok novel I'm currently reading. So now I'm curious about these golem.

Sue | 415 comments The Golem and the Jinni is a great choice, and not SO 'fantasy'-ish. There are no dragons and much of the story takes place in the very real world of New York City. Hope you enjoy it!

BINGO!

(And I had to use the center square).

Hello? Where is everybody?

message 404: by Readnponder (new)

Readnponder | 125 comments I finished the last square on my card Dec 28. My goal was to check off every square by year-end. The reason I persevered was to be nudged to read out of my comfort zone. But for Bingo, I would not have read: The Great Gatsby (everyone has read but me); The Golum & the Jinni (fantasy); 1984 (number in the title); The Rabbi's Cat (graphic novel); A View from the Bridge (play by Arthur Miller). I'm glad for the Bingo opportunity and hope to do it next summer.

Lara | 75 comments Well done. Alas, I did not fill in my whole card as planned, yet I read man choices I wouldn't have, and keep my tattered card to plan where to go next. Happy 2015 reading!!

Vicki Lanzo | 7 comments I may have missed this but can one book count for more than one square? I'm reading War of the Worlds and it falls into Science Fiction, a Classic I Should Have Read in High School and Published Before 1970, is that cheating? :)

message 407: by Paul (new)

Paul Pope | 3 comments Vicki, I think the rule is, One book = one square. Using the same book to cover multiple squares is cheating, and if you do it, the Summer Reading Bingo Police will find you.
Just sayin'. :-)

Vicki Lanzo | 7 comments Lol thank you for the warning Paul! I don't want to get in trouble with the Bingo police! :)

Gerald Miller | 821 comments I don't believe there are rules about checking off multiple squares. I asked about that on another thread and I was told that there were no rules about that.

message 410: by Sue (new)

Sue | 415 comments There are no rules, but I believe it is frowned upon.

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Well I guess I'm going to get frowned upon by somebody here. I have two squares checked off so it's no big deal. It's all for fun. I'll probably un check one but I'll keep the other. I just have to find an ink eraser. I should used a pencil. Btw I ordered a book today based on a bingo block so that's amazing.

Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) | 200 comments Would this ( The Odyssey by Homer ) be considered to be a verse novel?

message 419: by Lara (new)

Lara | 75 comments I would consider it exactly that. And it's great. Of all the translations, Fagles' is the best.
