I think if "Congratulations By the Way" counts as a book, then a child's picture book should count. (However I have not yet counted Congratulations, but may if it gives me a bingo!)

Readnponder | 125 comments Melissa -- I had to smile as I drew a mental picture of you swaying up and down the aisle voyeuristically inspecting the reading material of other passengers.

A couple years ago I decided to spy on what folks were reading on the beach at Nags Head. Fifty Shades of Gray seemed to the be favorite that summer.

message 303: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (thenovelbutterfly) | 101 comments Readnponder...I'm going home tomorrow and I plan to do it again!!! I only saw a few romance novels and the others had their books at such an angle I couldn't see the title. There were several Kindle and IPad readers too! I used to travel a lot more than I do now and observing what folks were reading in the airport was a favorite activity! It also helped strike up a few conversations whether it was over what I was reading or they were reading.

message 304: by Amy (new)

Amy (amybf) | 144 comments I hate e-readers because I can't spy on what people are reading! So I have to ask them. And I almost always will. Usually I'll just say, "So, what are you reading? Is it any good? Would you recommend it?" Most of the time people will be friendly about responding, but every now and then I'll get someone who will stare at me with a "none-of-your-business" glare and then look back down. See--if you weren't reading on your Kindle or Nook, I wouldn't have to bother you! ;)

message 305: by Paul (new)

Paul Pope | 3 comments I have a BINGO:

With a one-word title: Faust - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

By an author who shares your first name: Chapman's Odyssey - Paul Bailey

Fantasy: Glory Road - Robert A. Heinlein

Cozy Mystery: Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage - M. C. Beaton

(And for the middle "free" square, I decided to read a book I would have normally not read): Zen and the Art of Knitting - Bernadette Murphy

Laura | 90 comments Congrats to Rachel and Paul on their bingos! :-) (Those are the ones I see on this page -- I'm sure there are others!)

message 308: by Janet (new)

Janet | 5 comments Going for a full card - officially hit the halfway mark finishing my 12th book. Will do the full list at the end :)

message 309: by DeAnna (new)

DeAnna | 38 comments I'm close to a bingo -- I need to read a graphic novel and finish a book that I started and didn't finish previously. That one might be hard -- I have a "Couldn't finish" shelf, and I looked back over it and I'm *really* not interested in restarting any of them. May have to think more about others that didn't pass my 100 page test in the past.

message 310: by Shona (new)

Shona (anovelobsession) | 178 comments BINGO!
I have 5 cards and I am trying to get a bingo on each one before the summer is over. So far I only have one:

Been on TBR for longer than 2 years: The Paris Wife
A play : The History Boys
Free Square: (using this square as book of my choice) Delicious!
By an author of different culture: Americanah
With an animal on the cover: A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering
America on the Appalachian Trail

I'm working on another Bingo... just need to start a book that I think I will dislike. trying to decide what that is going to be. It may be The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer as I haven't enjoyed any of her books thus far and had no intention of reading her latest, but I may give it a shot.

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Does this count as a book with only words on the cover? Need opinions! It was very good, but so sad. Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng . By the way, this author is Celeste and I believe someone named Celeste was looking for authors earlier for that square.

It looks like it's only words to me. There's no person or other object on it :)

message 321: by Victoria (last edited Jul 26, 2014 07:07AM) (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Thanks! I might have to start focusing now and reading for more bingos. I have more than one open square, that if completed, would resulted in more than one bingo. So I need to go find something "everyone" has read and read 7 more short stories. I don't think I can complete a cover all though, because I don't think I will fill in "reread something". I just don't do that. But on this particular card, I only have 6 squares remaining open. It was a good card!

message 322: by Valerie (new)

Valerie BINGO!!!

Thriller/Suspence - A Brewing Storm

With A Child on the Cover - The Truth About Alice

Set in Another Country - The Penny Thief

That you saw someone reading - The Skeleton Crew: How Amateur Sleuths Are Solving America’s Coldest Cases

Graphic Novel - Relish

Amy (amybf) | 144 comments BINGO #2:

Found in a used bookstore: Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness
Longer than 500 pages: Steve Jobs
That you chose because of the cover: One Last Dance
Historical fiction: The Good Lord Bird
Published before 1970: The Good Earth

Trying for a blackout on two different cards. Hopefully before summer ends. If not, I keep reading!

message 326: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments So congrats to the bingo winners! I'm excited because I got 2 more by filling in one square. So here they are (some repeats from my earlier bingos).

Six words or more in title: We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves
10 short stories: won't list them all here
By author of different gender: We Are Not Ourselves
Science fiction: The Martian
Booktopia author: The Wife, the Maid, and the Mistress

Cozy mystery: Bruno, Chief Of Police
On TBR list for two years: Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood
Longer than 500 pages: Fall of Giants
Only words on cover: Everything I Never Told You
10 short stories: not listing all

message 327: by Victoria (last edited Jul 31, 2014 04:53PM) (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Oh! I have another one on a different card. This makes 5 total.

Author of different gender: Denali's Howl: The Deadliest Climbing Disaster on America's Wildest Peak
10 short stories: ibid
Part of series: The Silkworm
Six words or more in title: We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves
One word title: Bittersweet

This is still a very enjoyable game and I've read some great books this summer!

message 328: by Jeff (last edited Jul 31, 2014 07:38PM) (new)

Jeff | 5 comments BINGO!
With a number in the title: 11/22/63
By a small press: Myths for the Modern Age: Wold Newton Universe
Part of a series: The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower (King, Stephen)
Longer than 500 pages: The Fifties
Six words or more in the title: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

This has been so much fun and fun to make my first post after just being an observer.

I agree! This game has made me seek out things that I probably never would have read. And I've enjoyed them! I think I might print out a few more Bingo cards to tackle in the fall and winter months!

Thanks to you I am reminded that I really wanted to read "Preludes and Nocturnes" I recently read American Gods and I will be excitedly starting on The Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes

Jeff | 5 comments Laura wrote: "Congrats, Victoria and Jeff. :) I've filled in seven squares so far but am nowhere near close to Bingo. Having a lot of fun with this though."

I took the easy way to Bingo. I choose from my unread stacks to fill it in. Now I can tell my wife that my hundreds of unread books came in very handy.

message 334: by Victoria (last edited Aug 02, 2014 06:13PM) (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments I'm just bragging. I got another bingo (I do have 4 cards going).

Author of different gender: The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man
One word title: Busted: A Tale of Corruption and Betrayal in the City of Brotherly Love
Free square
Number in title: One Plus One
Thriller/suspense: Bird Box

And I highly recommend One Plus One by Jojo Moyes . Maybe not as good as Me Before You by Jojo Moyes , but if you liked one, you should like the other. I did not however enjoy The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes near as much as these other two. Any of these also work for the "only words on the cover" square.

Jessica Diame (bookish_world_of_jess) | 6 comments Working on my bingo and I need an to read a book by an author with my first name... Which is Jessica. My nook search turned up several self published authors, but the only one I recognized was Jessica Fletcher from the murder She Wrote Series. Does anyone have any suggestions on great Jessica authors?? Thanks

message 336: by Carey (new)

Carey (cpb46) Bingo!

Historical Fiction: Seven Locks: A Novel by Christine Wade
An audiobook: The Night Watch by Sarah Waters
Set in the Place where you Live: The Bridge by Doug Marlette
By an author of a different gender: The Farm by Tom Rob Smith
By a Small Press: Byrd by Kim Church

What fun!

I searched on goodreads and the picking seems pretty slim for Jessica. Unless you like romance I think. I saw a cozy mystery and maybe a YA. The same author names came up many times, I guess they are prolific.

Hmm, Jessica is a tough one! This might be YA, but sounds like it has a graphic/photo element that might be interesting? Good luck!

Ellen B Hi all,

I'm pretty close to done with Olive Kitteridge and am wondering if it fits the "only words on the cover" square.

message 342: by Carey (new)

Carey (cpb46) Second Bingo! This one just sort of came together without my looking for it!

Cozy Mystery: Murder is Binding
Borrowed from the Library: Still Life with Bread Crumbs
Nonfiction: Brain on Fire
Recommended in a BOTNS episode: We Were Liars
By an author of a different gender: The Farm

message 343: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Congrats, Carey! I really want to read The Farm after reading the sampler and hearing Ann's review, but it's not available through my elibrary and I have so many other books to read....

message 344: by Amy (new)

Amy (amybf) | 144 comments I've been playing two cards. Just got BINGO #3 on one of them. The other card--still no bingo.

BINGO #3:
Longer than 500 pages: Steve Jobs
By any Bookstopia author: A Burnable Book
Graphic novel: Watchmen
Translation: The Hypnotist
That you think you will dislike: Where You Left Me (which I actually did dislike)

This challenge has been fun. It's forced me to read genres that I wouldn't normally have picked up. And I've learned a few things about myself in the process--for instance, I am not a graphic novel person. So there's that.

message 345: by Victoria (last edited Aug 09, 2014 07:26AM) (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments All, Bruce Holsinger's A Burnable Book is on sale (ebook) today for $1.99. I just got my daily Bookperk notice. I'll try not to be sad that I bought it for $12.99 since I was happy to support Professor Holsinger and I'll try to hope that maybe my purchase put more money in his pocket (maybe my own delusion, but I'm going with that). But if you still need a Booktopia author for your Bingo, here you go!

message 346: by Cora (new)

Cora Lewis | 16 comments I just got my first BINGO!

A novella:Annabel Scheme
By an author of a different gender: Time and Again
With a number in the title: Ajax Penumbra 1969
That "everyone" but you has read: 1984
That you chose because of the cover: The Memory Keeper's Daughter

This is so fun! I've got a few more BINGOs just about to be completed on my card, so you'll be hearing from me again soon.

Happy Reading!

An Audiobook: FROG MUSIC by Emma Donohue
Chosen for Cover: THE UNCHANGEABLE SPOTS OF LEOPARDS by Kristopher Jansma

I recently finished reading The Major's Daughter: A Novel which is just out -- it's a novel set during WWII in New Hampshire. I liked the language, setting, and that I learned something about that era I didn't know.
