Thanks HIMS. Yes, Like Water for Chocolate and its ilk are off my normal reading radar, hence the request for recs. I will have a look at your suggestions though.

Thanks for this. 1Q84 has been on my TBRL for a long time, and would be my first Murakami. Might be the push I need to try it, though with Hard Boiled Wonderland being so highly recommended by HIMS...

I need to try Hard Boiled Wonderland still but I loved 1Q84. It is a bit long though so size might be a good tie-breaker if you need it.

Orlok | 555 comments #24. Jack Carter's Law by Ted Lewis
- Noir category

The length is a deal breaker, you're right. I fell way behind my challenges when I read Game of Thrones, which is shorter than 1Q84...

So it's Hard Boiled Wonderland up next.

message 56: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I haven't read IQ84. I've read a lot of Murakami and quite a bit from Japan so IQ84 is so far down the potential reading list that it probably isn't even in this decade anymore.

Orlok | 555 comments Exactly!

Domina was good, as was the Bryson, the rest were just so so (but all short, so there's that in their favour).

I always start out with the good intention of expanding my reading horizons, but this is where I usually end up as well.

message 67: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments I just look through the giant pile of wanting to read and there's usually stuff to cover almost everything. Anything I can't find in the pile becomes a challenge to go looking for possibilities which for me is a lot of the fun of reading. Findinng things to read.

It happens.

Sometime I just cannot read a new book. I have to do a re-read...

It is what it is, lol.

Same here, though nearing the end of the challenge year usually sees me selecting books specifically for challenges, otherwise I'll never make them. Has led me some interesting places though.

GA (garussell) | 349 comments Orlok, do you recommend the Jack Reacher short stories? I haven't read any. Congrats on reaching your goal!

Orlok | 555 comments GA wrote: "Orlok, do you recommend the Jack Reacher short stories? I haven't read any. Congrats on reaching your goal!"

If you like the Jack Reacher novels, then yes, I'd recommend the short stories too. They're like short novels with the same kind of "there's more going on here than meets the eye" stuff. Also, there's some back story which is interesting, showing what made Reacher, well... Reacher.

They can be read in any order, and if you just wanted to try one, I'd suggest Not A Drill to see what I mean about them being short novels.
