Mimi | 6 comments Hey guys!
I'm Miriam and I live in Austria. I just joined goodreads a few weeks ago and stumbled upon this group. My favourite genres are fantasy and science fiction. For 2017 my goal is to read 30 books and try to decrease my TBR.

Ilona | 4698 comments Welcome to the group, Mimi! Good luck with you goal!

message 1054: by Silencia (new)

Silencia (silenciadelumbrae) | 196 comments Hi there--tentatively dropping in to meet the group!

I am a tiny snow child from the Canadian tundra, though I'll soon be moving to greener pastures. I work in a bookstore, so my reading preferences quickly became...eclectic. As of right now I have a preference for genre fiction of all kinds and a deep-seated love of middle-grade and teen fiction, but I'm branching out into nonfiction, especially science and sociology.

Goodreads recommended this group to me multiple times, and even though I've never been part of a reading group this big, I finally bit! My reading goal for 2017 is pretty modest--15 new books that I haven't read before. Since I'm going to be moving in the fall and will be struggling to set up for graduate school, it would be too easy to fall back into rereading the same old 10 favourites while my piles and piles of new books go unread on my shelf. So the rule is that they have to be new to me!

Chris (cb100) | 50 comments Hi all - - Happy to be here. I'm in Charleston, SC. Kind of read everything to be honest, so thought this group would be interesting. My goal is only 60 this year, but we'll see. I do love to talk (probably to a fault) so apologize in advance. :)

Sharan (shango) | 5 comments Hi everyone! My name is Sharan and I live in the Netherlands, thence my spelling and grammar isn't perfect :P I'm 22 years old and currently graduating in Glass arts and I work in a kitchen, I want to study some more in Art History and teaching Visual Arts in the future.
Since a few years books became a new passion of mine, I love reading on the train to school and when I have free time also at home or in the park, but besides that I enjoy a good bookshop/library crawl and watch a great amount of booktube. I seek for a strong, original plot and characters, no specific genre. I'm also joining this group to broaden my horizon :)
Further interests of mine are dancing, movies, music, tv series, food and culture.

At the moment I'm a bit overwhelmed by the size of this group and the nummer of threads! But I will figure it out.

Gerhard (gerhardh) | 4 comments Hello! I am Gerhard Hope from South Africa. Have been looking for a 'support group' for the Reading Challenge. Am 5 books behind my year goal at the moment, having read 31 of 100 ... do I start to panic and change my overall goal, or just hang in there and see how I get along? I like to keep to track of what I'm reading, but my RC goals/achievements seem to fluctuate quite widely every year: work, personal life, energy levels, etc. etc. Frustrating.

Hi Sharan, welcome! I'm from the Netherlands as well :) I remember feeling the same way about all the threads in this group when I joined, but I'm sure you'll figure it out and feel at home soon enough. The mods are always available to help you out with any issues or questions you might have as are the rest of the members. Good luck and happy reading!

Hi Gerhard, welcome to the group! I really do experience this group as a support so I think you're at the right place for that :) My goal for this year is a modest 12 books, so I'm quite envious of your 31 already read books! I wouldn't advise panicking if you're behind on your goal since I believe that will not be beneficial to your reading pleasure, right? I wish you good luck with your goal and happy reading!

Definitely, life is already competitive and stressed enough as it is. Just go with the flow and wherever my reading takes me ...

Sharan (shango) | 5 comments Thank you very much Susy!! :)
@Gerhard yeah that's a healthier way to approach reading goals, I struggle with it too, to let it encourage you instead of enforce you to read.
Right now I'm on a book buying ban until I've read 10 more books, so now I feel like rushing through those 10 books so I can buy more, now THAT'S unhealthy :'D I need to slow down, just read a lot and buy a book when I feel like it that I would like to read the same week. No more massive TBR pile.

Shivam Singh (essheck) | 55 comments Hello everyone, this is Shivam from Mumbai , India. Just made an account was randomly searching for group when i found this one and i found it really welcoming.. i like to read historical fictions, scifi, fantasy, romance and basically anything but at all times i am really confused what i should read next. this year i aim to read minimum 40 books, hopeffully i will stay motivated.

message 1065: by Ilona (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments Hi Shivam, welcome to the group! I am sure that you will find some great books on Goodreads, so you will always have plenty of books to read next. Although, there might be too much choice, making it even harder to decide. Either way, good luck with you reading challenge! :)

message 1066: by Anitha (new)

Anitha | 1 comments Hi Everyone,

Thank you Ilona for the introductory email. My name is Anitha, I'm from the UK. I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett and Tamora Pierce but since there are only so many times I can re-read their books, I've been feeding my reading habit with a steady stream of fanstasy, sci-fi and crime/whodunnits (whenever I need a change of pace).
I'm constantly on the lookout for new books/series with strong female characters, but I absolutely abhor ones with' waifish yet supernaturally strong' characters or romance. So if anyone has any recommendations I am all ears :).
My goal for this year is 100 books, and I hope to develop the habit of reviewing them all.
It's nice to be part of a low pressure group and hopefully I'll get to know some of you along the way.
Till then

message 1067: by webslog (new)

webslog Howdy. I'm Web Webster, from Franklin, Tennessee, which lies about 20 miles south of Nashville, TN.

Joined as I was searching for active groups on GR. I did Infinite Summer back in 2009 and it was one of the most amazing reading-related experiences of my entire life. At that point I was hooked on how online groups can enrich an essentially solitary pursuit.

I love long books (Vanity Fair on the iPhone for the commute), and difficult books (I'm starting The Familiar).
I also have a taste for "single specific topic nonfiction." Salt. Cod. Lobster. Oysters. I came to science fiction late in life via Cory Doctorow.

If you look through my Reads, you'll see why I consider myself more of a gourmand of books than a gourmet.

message 1068: by Leticia (new)

Leticia Porter (leticialouise28) | 2 comments Hey my name is Leticia and I'm from down under (Australia). I have been a member on Goodreads since 2015 I think. It may be 2016.
I have always read and I haven't been one of those people that boasts about their lack of reading. I really started falling in love with reading in 2014 (I was 11 or 12) because I read The Hunger Games and I just started reading like mad. I've always been good at it and fast so I devoured books.
I don't even remember why I signed up to Goodreads.
My favorite type of books to read are mostly fantasy but I also love dystopian, some contemporary and I read basically everything.
My goal for 2017 is 65 books but I know that I can read more than that as last year I read 95 or something (oops). I just put it as 65 because it's achievable and I don't want to feel rushed or pushed to read a certain amount of books.

message 1073: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 35 comments Hi everyone,

I'm Ellen and I live in The Netherlands. My goal is to read at least 25 books in 2017. So far I'm up to 12, so I've got 13 more to go.
I like reading classics, historical and literary fiction, thrillers and every so often a fantasy novel. I'm open to suggestions about the 13 books I have to go.

I would actually like to read more than 25 books this year, but can't imagine I'll manage. I see people on Goodreads who read more than a book a day. I'm interested to know how others reach their goals!

message 1074: by Ilona (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments Welcome Ellen, I find the many challenges of this group a great way to read more books. You're off to a good start! We are only halfway the fifth month of the year, and you are already halfway your goal!
Happy reading! :)

message 1075: by Gerhard (new)

Gerhard (gerhardh) | 4 comments Sharan wrote: "@Gerhard yeah that's a healthier way to approach reading goals, I struggle with it too, to let it encourage you instead of enforce you to read."

Heh yeah, my reading goal functions more as a kind of marker to show me where I am ... though one cannot avoid the competitive angst of having set a goal, and then not reaching it. So ... do you lower your expectations, or raise them? Either way, you are bound to be disappointed. But as long as I read a bit every day, plugging away, I am happy. Each book is like a relationship actually; it has its ups and downs, and whirlwind moments ... until the next one comes along to distract you.

Good luck with that one. I bought a Kindle specifically in the naive hope that my book-buying habits would change. I still buy book-books ... what is worse, I will read a Kindle book I really like, and then buy a proper book specifically for my bookshelf.

message 1077: by Sherece (new)

Sherece Hello Everyone,
My name is Sherece I'm from Virginia. I have been reading books off and on mostly romance novels. I decided to finally join the 2017 reading challenge, none of my friends are doing it at the moment, I look forward to members recommendations as well as discussions. Lately, I have wanted to explore other genres, like Historical fiction(i.e. world war II era), Made for movies, Mystery, and Self-help. I found this group by dong a general group search, looking to get with another member to do buddy reads and motivate me to try something new. my current reading goal is to complete 30 books this year which is not and an easy fete for my current lifestyle.
What's your reading goal?

message 1078: by Ilona (last edited May 17, 2017 01:09AM) (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments Hi Sherece, welcome to the group!
Historical fiction is my favourite genre, if you are looking for books that take place during the second world war, I would recommend The Nightingale, All the Light We Cannot See, Salt to the Sea, and my personal favourite The Book Thief!
Happy reading!

message 1079: by Sherece (new)

Sherece OMG the book thief is on my want to read list! Thank you for the suggestion I will checkout the other books as well.

Gini | 40 comments Hi, Sherece! Welcome aboard. This is a great place to do some exploring and reading. You'll be surprised at how much you really do read after you're here for a while. I know I have been.

Kait | sixcrowsbooks (sixcrowsbooks) Hi, everyone, my name is Kaitlyn, but you can call me Kait, if you like. I am 19, and I live in the United States. I'm currently a junior in college, as of this upcoming fall semester, and I'm majoring in Psychology and minoring in Gender and Women Studies.

I love to read (obviously!), but I also like to run, scroll through Twitter, and play video games, such as Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, and Pokemon. I usually read fantasy, contemporary fiction, YA, novels with LGBT+ characters, nonfiction, and the like. I recently finished the Harry Potter series (for the first time...whoops), and I am currently on the second book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. My goal for this year is fifteen books, and I already have five done and working on the sixth. :)

Hopefully, I'll come to like it here; hi!!

message 1082: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Welcome, Kaitlyn! What did you think of Harry Potter series? Did it compare to the hype?

Kait | sixcrowsbooks (sixcrowsbooks) Thank you, Cassandra. :) I personally really enjoyed it, especially near the end of the series. The writing changed: instead of just being centered towards children, it wrote towards an older audience, as well. I don't know if it lives up to the hype, because there are flaws, but I still liked it.

I see that you have pledged to read 3000 books this year. That is more than 8 books a day! You might wanna downscale your goal :)

I find that joining some challenges and buddy reads in this group help me to read more! It is a great motivation to achieve some smaller goals, and each of these smaller goals help you to achieve your overall goal for this year.

As the genre, I don't actually have any particular choice, I am more like on reading anything that I get a hold on.But most of the case I read historical, philosophical books and to not fry my brain up with all that, I add some novels.Marques, borges or Saramago are my favorite authors. Will be looking forward to share people's experience in here.

Welcome to the group Branka!
What types of books do you like to procrastinate with?

I remember hating the required readings for highschool. But now that I have an adult perspective and understanding, and nobody is forcing me to analyze them to death, I'm really enjoying the classics so much more :D
Goodluck with your goal!

Hi Gerhard, nice to meet you. I always want to err on the side of too much rather than too little. Even if I can see I can't make my goal, my competitive nature keeps goading me into getting as close as possible. One year I missed my goal by 1 book, but actually, I would have missed it by about 10, but I just had to keep on trying. There are no Goodreads police here. Just do the best you can and I guarantee it will be more than you would have read without a goal.

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) | 108 comments Hello all,
I am Stormie, I have been a member but have not been around in awhile due to life. So I am hoping to participate more from now on. I need to look around and re-familiarize myself with things and post my challenges. I have been reading, just not as much as I normally do. I usually have more than one book going at a time, and usually get close to 100 or more read a year, so not sure what I am going to sign up for seeing as how the year is almost half over.
