message 752: by Mars (new)

Mars Gambau (mariabautista) | 6 comments Hello my name is Maria Bautista and I'm new in this group.
I'm from Mexico, but I live in Delaware.
My favorite book gender so far is magical realism, mysteries, thrillers and foreigns.
Around six years ago I recover my love reading considering that english is my second language and is kinda hard to read since you don't have a specific author, which it was hard for me to read. I can tell that my first book was "Like Water For Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel.
The reason for me to join for this group is to read the experience of others about reading and to try new genders. I found this group since I was looking for a group to join.
My reading goal is to read 30 books.

Sandhya Shekar (sandhyashekar) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I am Sandhya :) Of-late, I seem to be spending a lot of time on FB and am trying to break the habit by switching to real books. I enjoy reading classics, fiction, biography and travel diaries as well.

message 754: by Tiana (new)

Tiana Kia Ora!

My name is Tiana, from New Zealand. Halfway through my Fine Arts degree and rather poor, I returned home to work full time and save before doing some travel and then returning to finish my degree. Getting back to my hometown, I found it quite difficult finding a job that would suit my living situation, so found myself in the library browsing for books a lot. I've always planned to read 'the classics' of literature, and had been slowly ticking books off my list over the years, however, with this unexpected amount of time on my heads, I really decided to kick it up a notch and, if I wasn't earning money, I wanted to earn knowledge.

Setting up a Goodreads account greatly helped with keeping track of what I've read and what I want to read, making a trip to the library a lot more efficient rather than an hour of ambling the aisles judging books from their covers. It also lead me down a dark rabbit hole of clicking 'Want to Read' on a great many books, so I'm now left with a huge total number of 'To Read' books that whilst I look forward to actually reading, I can't imagine getting through any time in the next twenty years (haha).

Earlier this year, I had set myself the challenge of reading 25 books – roughly one book every two weeks. With working full time, and taking into account the length of the books I generally like to read, I thought that this would be a manageable goal, even one that I could perhaps surpass.

I found this group after finding a comment online about the Popsugar 2017 Reading Challenge, and upon Googling it, the group for Goodreads 2017 Yearly Challenges came up – so here I am. I've always loved reading, so participating in challenges like these not only helps to broaden my literary knowledge, but gives me goals and timeframes, things that greatly help the way I like to manage myself. As I've just started Bullet Journaling, these challenges also make great additions to my spread collection.

The topic of 'what kinds of books I like to read' can most readily be answered by what kinds of books I don't like to read: romance, mystery, crime, thriller, horror, young adult, comics, graphic novels. Most other genres tend to be okay. I particularly enjoy historical fiction, memoir, classics and fiction.

Ngā mihi!

Alina Probst | 1 comments Hi, my name is Alina and I am from Germany.

In my childhood I never finished a book. I started reading them and quit after a few pages.

During the last year I started reading more than ever before and I am even finishing the books ;-) Now I am reading the books I had in my bookshelf as a teen (which I put away then) as well as more challeging literature. I kinda love a wide variety of topics, youth, historical, thiller, horror, classics, fiction...

I also love learning languages. Right now I teach myself Spanish. And I am also learning piano by myself.

My goal for 2017 is 52 books. At the moment I am reading The pillars of the earth by Ken Follett.

message 757: by Evelina (new)

Evelina Hi everyone! I'm from the northern part of Sweden and I've been a member of Goodreads for quite some time now, but haven't really been that active in groups, til now.

I'm an "all-reader", I read most kind of books but I have a soft spot for young adult, crime, thriller, romance, history fiction and feelgood. Recently I have also discovered fantasy and dystopian novels. Most books I read in Swedish, but I try to read at least some books in English.

I found this group completely by chance, and I hope to be inspired by all the other members.

My reading goal for this year is to read at least 65 books, I would love it if I could read more, but I have full-time job and sometimes it's hard to find the time to read.

message 758: by Kat (new)

Kat Haynes (frequentlykatie) | 2 comments Hello all! My name is Katie and I'm from North Carolina, fairly close to Raleigh. My favorite genre is Young Adult but I like Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Mystery as well. I'll read pretty much anything you put in front of me and I've only ever not finished one book (The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova - I was in middle school or early high school when I tried and I plan on one day attempting it again). I found this group through someone I follow on GoodReads. She's a makeup artist on YouTube. My 2017 reading goal is a book challenge I found on Pinterest (because where else) with 26 books from various categories. My three favorite books are Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis, and The Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce (I recognize that this last one isn't a single book, but oh well).

message 760: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey :) My name's Imogen (obviously) and, though I come from England, I live in Dubai with my beautiful bulldog, Dolly. Other than reading, I wouldn't say that I have many hobbies, but I do have interests in volleyball and debating.
For the past few years, I have read mostly YA books, but am trying to branch out more this year and read across a variety of genres, whilst still enjoying my usual YA chaos.
I am currently studying in the IB diploma programme, with english literature, psychology and business being my three higher level (main) subjects; it is my goal to one day become an author and be able to support me and my doggo off the money I make from doing what I love.

message 761: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Judy (courtneyjudy) Hi There! New to the group, not new to Goodreads :-) I'm not sure where to start...so I'll answer the template questions

- Where are you from? -- Born and raised in California, currently living and will until I die in Maryland.

- What kinds of books do you like to read? -- Pretty much anything, but I tend to stay away from Romance novels...

- How did you find our group? -- just browsing around.

- What's your reading goal? -- 2017 goal has been set to 40, but that could certainly change!

Beccy | 5 comments Hi I'm Rebecca, I live in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, in the UK. Its a flat Fenland city, about 75 miles from London, with good road connections to the A1 which is fortunate so you can get out easily. I read a wide variety of books, but fell in love with John Irving about 25 years ago and he is very much my favourite author. I have a teenage son who I would love to read more so if you have recommendations for a surly 14 year old thankyou. I have always enjoyed the escapism of submersing myself in a good book, but lately have become lazy and diverted myself with the dark arts of the telly. So I've set myself up with a challenge to read 52 books this year a book a week, and will need the encouragement. I want to read a good mix of contemporary, and classic, perhaps get a hearsup for my sons gcses

message 763: by Beccy (new)

Beccy | 5 comments Hi my names Rebecca, I live in a flat Fenland city ( because it has a Cathederal) called Peterborough , UK. I used to love submersing myself in a good book, but recently I've been lazy and spent too much time with the dark arts of the telly. I fell in love with John Irving 25 years ago, and have probably been more loyal to him and his characters than I have ever been to any real person I have ever met. I like a wide range of books, but have never enjoyed fantasy or Sci fi as genres. I have a surly 14 year old son who I would love to encourage to read more, so hopefully setting an example and having some recommendations will help. I found the group by accident but thought you might keep me motivated, also I know I just want to share an amazing story with someone who's read it. I've set myself up for 52 a book a week, hopefully. Ideally I want to read a good mix of contemporary, and classics also plays as its been a while. If I can get a head start on my sons gcse set exts for next year that would be a bonus too. Sorry for droning on I look forward. To joining your community.

message 764: by Lör (new)

Lör K. (transsyo) Hi there! My name is Syo and I'm from England. I love a lot of genres, anything really, but my favourite to read at the moment is poetry and manga. I found the group by chance, I don't quite remember how, whoops! My reading goal for this year is 140 books, but I am actually challenging myself to read 350 volumes of manga this year as well so we'll see how well that goes!

El • Your Average Bibliovert | 12 comments Hi! I'm Ellie and I live in the United States of America. I prefer to read dystonia novels but enjoy all types of books. I found this group because my friend joined it and I saw her status update. My goal this year is to read at least 80 books but hopefully I'll be able to read more? I'm fairly active on Goodreads so I'll try to be just as active in this group as well.

Hello everyone,

I'm brand new to Goodreads and just beginning to navigate through all of the features and join groups. I've been out of the serious reading game for awhile, so this year one of my New Year's Resolutions was to read 100 books in 2017. I love all kinds of genres and styles of writing, but I've been gravitating towards YA fiction lately.

message 769: by Jo (new)

Jo Daniels Hi, my names Jo and I'm from the uk. I joined the site a few days ago and I've set my challenge at 36 books. I'm currently reading 'the never list' which so far I think is good (I'm on chapter 6).

message 770: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea Anderson (chelsea_faye) | 7 comments My name is Chelsea and I live in the Denver Metro area of Colorado. I enjoy reading a wide array of books, especially science-fiction and fantasy. I found the group by doing a simple search using the terms 2017 reading challenge. Last year I read 38 books. The best book I read last year (2016) was "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. It was really imaginative, well written and very captivating. The worst book I read last year (2016) was "Danish Girl" It was poorly written and the author took too many liberties with the main character, namely making her out to be schizophrenic and intersex rather than revolutionary and transgender. The best book I've read so far in 2017 is "Skagboys" by Irvine Welsh. It was challenging because it was written in Scottish dialect, but once I got the hang of it, the writing style added greatly to the story. It was a brilliant piece, but not for the faint of heart. My goal is to read 40 books this year and to have at least 10 of those be nonfiction.

message 771: by Em (new)

Em theglitterybookworm_ Hey! I'm EmilyAnn (but you can call me Emily) and I love reading (well obviously) I also love to act! One thing you might find sad/interesting is ever since my best friend left I've turned to books for my friends. I'm being bullied for it but who cares right? I mean so many of my bookish friends like Day from Legend would mostly likely beat the crap out of them. I'm also obsessed with the show Glee. So yeah.... oh wait!! I have a cat! Yep. He's my soulmate. He's turning one on the 22nd of February! I can't handle it guys I can't!

See you all around,
Emily(Ann)

Bruna, as you will see, no goal is too big or too small here. And to me, 50 books is a lot.

Good luck with your challenges, everyone! :)

Varun Singh | 1 comments Hi everyone,
I am Varun from India. Though I have never been an avid reader but recently I read an autobiography of the Indian cricketer and the effect it has had on me has brought me here. Now I want to read more and discover the genres I love.
I want to discover different cultures and broaden my horizon through books. I have made a small goal of six books as of now but I would want to over achieve.

message 776: by Gaudy (new)

Gaudy | 1 comments Hi!!! My name is Gaudy, I live in the Bronx, NY. I prefer to read Self-Help, Philosophical and Fiction, preferably Thrillers. I found this group by searching "bookclubs." My reading goal for this year is to read about ten books this year. This is a really really small goal, but I just graduated from college and I've had enough of textbooks, now I can read the books that I really enjoy and I'm excited, but I don't want to overwhelm myself, so I'm starting slow. I'm excited that I found this group and excited about sharing the great books I've read and those that I didn't find so interesting.

And since I got my Kindle I have discovered new generes and authors I hade no idea was out there. It opened a whole new world for me.

My reading challenge this year is for a 100 books. I think I'm gonna make it since I read 156 books last year. Yeah some of them was kinda short but anyway. ☺

I actually haven't been habitually reading for a while since I've been focusing on my studies. Therefore, my challenge for the year is 40 books which won't be too bad (I hope). I'm about 5 and a half books in.

I enjoy reading historical fiction but mostly fantasy, sci fi and thriller. Any novels or novellas worth sitting down to read, please don't hesitate to recommend. I would greatly appreciate it!

message 788: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (arielmere) Hello everybody! I'm Ariel, I'm 20 years old and I live in Misiones, Argentina! I like to read classic books of any type, although I wouldn't prefer to read romance ones hehehe, but I'm still open to it :D. I don't use to read contemporary authors except if they're from no less than the year 2000, I make exceptions of course, you can't say no to everything, I am a person more of literature and poetry, I love it! And it's ironic that I say I'm open to any type of books but I wouldn't prefer to read romance or contemporary authors, that's just in case of literature, it's contradictory so let's say that I'm open to anything but like everybody else I have my tastes that I decide while I keep reading a book, whether I finish it or not, it would say if I like it or not. Perhaps in a decade I will read the books I don't like right now, who knows?
I found this group by searching in the group option, I just wrote "challenge".
I'm new in goodreads so I set my challenge to 50 books, I'm hoping to make it!
Cheers!
P S: I'm sorry for my english I'm learning :D

Dovilė Jonikienė | 1 comments Hi!!! My name is Dovile :) I am 25 years old and I am from Lithuania. Reading is my passion. I read self help, coaching, self motivation, classic, romance and stories based on real facts. In 2017 my goal is 30 books :)

message 790: by EllenaReads (new)

EllenaReads Hi! My name is Jelena. I'm from Serbia, small country in Europe. I'm on goodreads currently for about 4-5 days.

*Small back story: I did not like to read. Like AT ALL. I usually didn't even read the books for school. But I have a friend with enormous collection of books, so she would give my some on reading. And that increased over the past few months. She introduced me to booktube. And from there, I got to goodreads, then made a account. On a side of screen showed up 2017 reading challenge, and that's how I got here.

I don't really have a specific genre or type of books that I read. I usually go with a flow, and I'm currently interested in thrillers. Currently reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman (10th Anniversary edition), because I want to read a book before I watch the TV show that starts this year. My reading goal is to read 50 book this year. Wish me luck, and I hope you are achieving your goals.

P.S. Sorry if there are some grammar mistakes, google translate isn't the most trusting resource. ;)

message 791: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1 comments Hi Everyone,

My name is Sarah and I’m from Minnesota. I like reading many different kinds of books but, my favorite are the horror, suspenseful and mystery type of books. I made my account a few years ago to get me motivated to start reading again. I use to be such a book worm but, with school and work I’ve had very little time for myself. I have not done so well reading books these last few years but, I’m excited to start setting time aside for myself to just relax and read some good book. I have set a goal of 30 books for myself this year and would love any kind of suggestions to read.

Good luck to everyone in their reading goals.

- Sarah

message 793: by Susan (last edited Feb 25, 2017 03:58PM) (new)

Susan (toomanyyungins) | 8 comments I completed the 2016 reading challenge and am excited to do it again. I love reading but have found that life often gets in the way. I made the commitment to read all 42 books last year and ended up reading 52. I read paper books, e-books and listen to audio books. Often, I will have 4 or 5 books going at the same time. I am a member of several book clubs and they keep me motivated and challenged, too.
I love all types of books. Mystery, memoir, historical fiction and true crime are some of my favorite genres, but I'm open to read anything that strikes me as interesting. A few of my current favorites are Stiff by Mary Roach, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, In The Woods by Tana French, and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

message 794: by AmbWitch (new)

AmbWitch | 326 comments Hey, I’m Amber from the UK and have been on Goodreads a few years. My reading goals were always around the same but last year I lowered it as I was starting university to study psychology and expected I would not have the same amount of time to read. I then had to increase my reading goal as it appears the more work I have to do, the more I want to slip into the fantasy world of books (though I ensure I get all my work done first). This year I have put my reading goal at 50.

I have varied tastes when it comes to books but my favourite area of a book store is the sci-fi, fantasy, horror section. As well as reading I enjoy to write, taking part in NaNoWriMo the past couple of years.

I'm very much a Luddite so not sure quite yet how to navigate the site as efficiently as is possible. I read daily. Usually about 10 books each month. I recently re-read Jane Austen who is much more satisfying as an adult. Now working m way through Murakami, though taking this slowly as he isn't an easy quick read, but oh so wonderful.
