Hello!
I'm busily getting ready for next year and trying to decide what to read next (how?? how will I decide??) but in the meantime I thought it would be good to get to know each other a little so if you want to let us know your name, where(ish) in the world you are and whether you've read every Discworld book, none of them or somewhere in between that would be fun I think!

message 2: by Nahree (new)

Nahree | 2 comments Hi!
*frantically googles "Discworld" *... full disclosure, I've never heard of Discworld, but you're a fantastic person with fantastic taste in books and you make everything fun, so I'm in!

Bex (bex1) | 15 comments Mod
Aww thanks Nahree!! I can't believe you haven't - I think you'll like it, particularly the Tiffany Aching books :-) I know what I'm sending you for Christmas... (although it won't arrive until like February now probably lol)

message 4: by Nahree (new)

Nahree | 2 comments ooooh, I like the sound of that!

message 5: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandyannecurtis) What fun! I've long meant to read the Discworld novels, so this might be just the kick in the pants I needed. :)

My name is Mandy, and I live in Austin, TX, USA. I have only read one Discworld novel—The Colour of Magic—and that was more than a decade ago, so it barely counts. :)

message 6: by Jess (new)

Jess Redman | 1 comments I also have never heard of Discworld but I love you and also trust your taste in books! I also needed some inspiration for my next book to book and here it is!

So for the people who aren't Nahree and don't already know me, hi! I'm Bex (or Bekah or Rebekah... occasionally Chewbecca, but NEVER Becky) and I'm in Kent, UK. I've loved the Discworld books since I was a teenager although I somehow haven't read every Pratchett book, and a lot of those I've read I now don't remember so this year will be great for rereading those titles!

Hey Jess! Excited you're joining us :-) I think you'll love Discworld (OK maybe just because I think everyone will but you know!) and am excited to throw book recommendations at you, it's what I do best!

Hi Mandy! The Colour of Magic is great but far from my favourite (I think that's the case for others too!) so I hope you'll find some to fall in love with during the year :-)

message 10: by Karin (new)

Karin (karinmylife) | 2 comments Hi guys,
my name is Karin and I'm from Vienna, Austria.

I was introduced to this amazing series by a friend of my parents many years ago and have now collected all the novels but I still need to read some. I love the witches, the watch, DEATH and Moist but would never be able to pick a favorite.

Can't wait what you plan for us in 2017 :)

Hi! My sister Miriam (who'll be along soon I'm sure!) just moved to Vienna , we're looking forward to visiting her there!

You just listed all my favourites :-) I have a soft spot for Moist especially although I still haven't read Raising Steam - something 2017 will rectify I think!

message 12: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (livinginthetwilightworldofdreams) | 1 comments Hi!

I'm the aforementioned Miriam who now lives in Vienna. I have taken a break from German learning/watching Friends on Netflix to contribute that I'm doing Discworldathon (though I need to reacquire like half the series) and that I run a board games blog over at www.tametheboardgame.com and we're going to try and tie the Discworld games into the books over the year on my blog. :D

The Tiffany Aching series, the Watch and Death are my favourites. :D

message 13: by Annette (new)

Annette Jordan Hi everyone, I'm Annette from Dublin, Ireland. I've been a fan of Terry Pratchett since picking up Truckers when I was 9. I've read some but by no means all of the Discworld books, and had already decided to make them a project for 2017 when I heard about this group...oh and it's almost time for my annual Hogfather read!

message 14: by Sue (new)

Sue (fyrewitch) | 4 comments Hi folks, I'm Sue from Brisbane, Australia. I found and fell in love with Discworld when I was in uni in the 90s. I've read the books but I'm always up for a reread. We have a local theatre company that does a stage production of a Discworld book each year. This year was Guards Guards and next year will be Lords and Ladies. The Night Watch are my favourite bunch with an honourable mention to the witches - I want to be Granny Weatherwax when I grow up.

message 15: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Hi all. I'm Jenna in the US and I started reading the Discworld series in high school when a friend recommended him. However, I never really truly got into the series until I started reading them out of order, mainly, the Night Watch books. Mostly due to our Patrician....

Looking forward to next year's reread!

message 16: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Rebecca Shaw | 3 comments Hi everyone, my name is Elizabeth (Liz) and I have read most of the discworld books. Many of them multiple times. I really like the nightwatch, witches and Moist. I love the interaction of action and humour in these books. I am Canadian and currently in the west part of Canada.
I look forward to discussing these books with everyone in the group, particularly those of you who are reading them for the first time.

message 17: by Elizabeth (last edited Dec 06, 2016 11:33AM) (new)

Elizabeth Rebecca Shaw | 3 comments If you liked Moist in the other books, you should continue to like him in "Raising Steam". I enjoyed his exploits in that one as well as the others.

message 18: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Paszkiewicz | 2 comments Hi, I'm Ruth. I'm in London. I thought I had read all the Discworld books, but recently picked up 'Thief of Time' and realised I hadn't read it before, so its probably time for a re-read just to make sure! Looking forward to it!

message 19: by Alysa (new)

Alysa Hello, my name is Alysa and I'm from Toronto, Canada and the discworld series helped save my life by cheering me up he year my mum died. They will always hold a special place In my heart and I am eternally grateful to Terry Pratchett for writing them.

message 20: by Kerry (new)

Kerry | 1 comments Hi, I'm Kerry and I'm from Belfast, Northern Ireland. I've been a fan of the Discworld series since I was a teenager, although I haven't read them all yet. My favourite so far has been 'Equal Rites' - Granny Weatherwax is one of the best characters I have ever encountered.

message 21: by Ian (new)

Ian Banks | 16 comments Hi, my name is Ian. I live in Perth, Western Australia and I've been a fan of Discworld since I found a copy of The Colour Of Magic in a local bookstore in 1985 (I was 15). I bought every book in order when they came out (#fanbrag) because they are brilliant. My favourites are all of them, really.

message 22: by Becci (new)

Becci | 2 comments Hello, I'm Becci from Albany, Australia and I have read every Discworld book/novel/short story ever published.
Actually, that's not quite true - I'm missing two of the graphic novels :D
And I should confess that I do read a dozen (or more) Discworld novels every year anyway, so I'm more in this to see if I can't convert a few more disciples into Pratchettarianism :D
Incidentally, I love Vetinari... and the Librarian..... and Vimes... and Death... and.... you know what? I like everyone....

message 23: by Riley (new)

Riley Anne Hi, I'm Riley. I'm from Philadelphia, PA, USA. I started reading the Discworld books as a teenager and am still madly in love with them. My theory is that there's at least one Discworld book for everyone, they just may not know it yet. So I try my best to be altruistic and match friends and family up with the one(s) I think they'd enjoy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I maintain my theory! I think I started off with Equal Rites but couldn't get into it. Then about a year later, my friend insisted that I try Guards! Guards! And so the obsession began.

message 24: by Susan (new)

Susan Ferguson | 1 comments I'm Susan from Ash Flat, Arkansas (retired there to my husband's family farm). I love Discworld, have for years and have passed that love on to my sons. I have read all the discworld books - and reread them many times. I'm always up for reading them again.

message 25: by Mitali (last edited Dec 07, 2016 10:00PM) (new)

Mitali | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Mitali, from Mumbai, India. I've been a huge fan of Discworld for around 14 years now. I've read all the books, and reread several. I started a slow reread of my favourites a couple of years ago, but after Sir Terry's death in 2015 (*sob*), I've decided to reread the whole series, maybe skipping, or at least leaving out for the moment, my least favourite ones (almost exclusively all the ones starring Rincewind) and the ones that I have reread at least once.

My favourite sub-series is easily the Watch, and my favourite book is Night Watch. I also adore Tiffany Aching, with A Hat Full of Sky and The Wee Free Men being my favourites in that sub-series. Apart from that ... well, I better not keep listing my favourites, or I'll wind up listing two-thirds of the entire series!

Hi everyone! So exciting to have people from everywhere here, nice to 'meet' you all. Feel free to invite people to this group, it's open to everyone! :-)

message 27: by Dan (new)

Dan Chaput | 1 comments Hello all!!!!
My name is Dan and I live in Montreal Canada. Got shown Discworld back in the 90`s and fell instantly in love. By far my fav is anything to do with Cohen the Barbarian. Interesting Times is the best of all novels in my eyes but there are so many that are right there in second place. This holiday season I will be reading Wee Free Men...cannot wait!!! A tradition I have like most of you I am sure is to read Hogfather every December.

message 28: by Esther (new)

Esther Fairbairn | 1 comments Hi I'm Esther, I'm in London. I started trying to read Discworld with Mort when I was 9 because most of the rest of my family were reading it, and understood nothing. A few years later I reread Mort and loved it and have been hooked ever since. My favourites are the witches, I love the Tiffany Aching series but my all time favourite Discworld book is Carpe Jugulum. I'm really looking forward to this because I still have a lot of books that I haven't read.

message 29: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10 comments I'm Heather from Ohio in the U.S. I've read all the books at least once except for the last half of Steam. I couldn't do it because I kept worrying that it would be the last one and I didn't want to finish in case it was.
My favorites are the Witches. I want to be Granny Weatherwax when I grow up.
I'm going to be leading the readalong of Small Gods in April.

message 30: by Michal (new)

Michal Paszkiewicz | 1 comments Hi, I'm Michal, I'm in London. I'm still working my way through discworld in an unsystematic way. I am a great fan of Moist and I particularly love the similarities between Ankh-Morporkh and London (I also basically run [some of] the clacks for London's rail).

message 31: by Julie (new)

Julie (juliwy) Hello! I'm Juli from North Carolina. I first read the Discworld books in college back in the 80s when there were only just a few books in this series. Back to re-visit and excited!! Just finished re-reading book one and look forward to more! :)

message 32: by Kate (new)

Kate Hi, I'm Kate from Hampshire in the UK.
My first Discworld novel was Pyramids and that got me hooked for good! I haven't read them all but am slowly advancing through my collection. Any book with DEATH in has to be a favourite! Looking forward to the challenge.

message 33: by ▫️Ron (last edited Dec 29, 2016 05:43AM) (new)

▫️Ron S. Hey TP fans,
I'm looking to redirect nervous energy into reading a lot in 2017.

I read Hogfather for the holidays. Reading Equal Rites currently.

My first Discworld book was Pyramids too! I'm thinking of re-reading it for the Discworldathon. I'm also in Hampshire :)

Hello everyone, I'm Ellie and I'll be hosting Hogfather month next year. I've read all of the books except Raising Steam and The Shepherd's Crown because I've been delaying the end :(

message 35: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (golden_lily) | 1 comments Lo all, I'm Danielle from Ohio, US. Relatively late Discworld reader, only seriously started in the last 4 years. I've read 17 - mostly Watch and Wizards. My first was Hogfather back in 2005, but I really started reading with Colour of Magic.

message 36: by Lanette (new)

Lanette Miller | 1 comments Hi, Im Lanette, I live outside of Boston Mass, in the US.
I have been a Pratchett fan for years. I have read and listened to all the books several times. My favorite book is the Night Watch but I think think Tiffany is my favorite character.

message 37: by C.nick (new)

C.nick (cnick) | 15 comments Hello everyone! My username's C.nick but you can call me Nic for short. I think anything with the Nac Mac Feegle is my favourite even if they are an unabashed stereotype. I'm the somewhere in between person so hopefully this gives me the chance to flesh out my Discworld have-read list. Fingers crossed because I'm just starting a new job and there's a lot of work to be done.

Hogfather was my first Discworld book too!

Hi my user name is Bodwizebooks, but AKA Terry/Tel or Tezza. I am a Discworld fan and have read all the books and have them all in my library collection, at the moment in paperback but now changing them to Hardback (first editions). My favourite books are, The Light Fantastic (Rincewind is a brilliant character), Reaper Man (Death is FANTASTIC 'see what I did there'). Soul Music, Carpe Jugulum, The Truth, Wee Free Men. My favourite Characters are: Death, The Watch, Rincewind, The Witches (Magrat & Nanny Ogg), Detritus. Well most them actually! I will start rereading Wyrd Sisters as soon as I finish the book I'm reading now to try and keep up and keep in touch with you all to discuss these books. Looking forward to the discussions.

message 39: by Scott (new)

Scott White (scott_white) | 4 comments Hello all, I'm Scott from South Australia. I've recently embarked on reading the discworld series for the first time. So far I have read the first couple of books from the watchmen, witches and death sub-series. With Guards! Guards! being the first book I read in the series. So, I plan to be participating in the group read alongs and hope to read much more of the series this year.
Currently ~80% through Reaper Man, which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Igy The Book Hermit Hey everybody I am Kevin The Book Hermit. I am from Spanaway, WA. I started reading Discworld back in 1998. My favorite characters would have to be DEATH, the witches and disc watch.

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 3 comments Hi, I live in TX and I heard about the Discworldathon through Kristen's March Magics! (Because I'm a Diana Wynne Jones fan who heard about Pratchett because of that.) I've only read "Guards! Guards!" so far of Pratchett's books, but I just started "Mort" for the March Magics readalong, and I managed to find 20 Pratchett books at a library sale this week, so I feel all stoked for some Pratchett reading this year! I'm excited. :)
