Marlene | 364 comments Ransome's Honor (The Ransome Trilogy, #1) by Kaye Dacus was really enjoyable, and I have to believe it was inspired by Persuasion.

message 155: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 364 comments wosedwew - Thanks. I was literally falling asleep when I wrote those posts! "Just one last thing!"

Well, she must have inherited that trait from someone!

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments ...the apple falling not far from the tree.

I am one to set a certain number of goals for the day. I reach them (not too many) and then everything more is just surplus. It helps me not be overwhelmed when I have an agenda.

Ahnya Marlene wrote: "I am noticing many Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella stories, and I think that's awesome! Does anyone know of a good story based on other fairy tales?"

I LOVE RETELLINGS! Here is a link to my non JAFF retelling shelf:

Some I have read some not yet.

There are lots of good lists all over goodreads. Here is another link to find them: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/fair...

message 160: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 364 comments Sheila, That's a good system. What do you do if you don't meet your goals?

message 161: by Marlene (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments Marlene wrote: "Sheila, That's a good system. What do you do if you don't meet your goals?"

I have very realistic goals so that has never happened...truthfully. Set them low and anything over those is a bonus. It works, I get things done.

message 163: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 364 comments Wow! So you're SUPER CAUTIOUS in your goals. OK. I think that's a skill to learn. My system is a loop which has morphed from my FLYLady lists, which I do over and over all day, interrupted by meals and kids' homework:

set timer (for the dishwasher, dryer, and Roomba)
check calendar for what's coming up
put away food
take meds
start laundry
start dishwasher (2-3 times per day)
run Roomba/Braava
do prep for calendar items
clean kitchen counter

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments When you have children it can put a kink in your schedule. Remember, I am retired so I don't have that responsibility. But I did do a lot of volunteering when they were in school: home room mother, Girl Scout Leader, etc.

message 165: by Marlene (new)

Marlene | 364 comments True. I feel like getting anything"extra" done is an insurmountable task sometimes! Doing that extra volunteer stuff is something that we don't do much of anyone due to the logistics. Next year my last one will be in all day kindergarten and I will start doing better and hopefully make big strides! I'm enjoying this last year while it lasts, though.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments That is such a small precious window of time Marlene that will pass all too quickly. I know it is hard to believe now, but enjoy every minute...

I held my newborn nephew in my arms and marveled at how tiny he was. He is now 37 years old with three children of his own. His oldest is a teenager learning to drive. Where did the time go? I have to look at the photo album for pictures of when he was a baby and a toddler in order to remember him ever being that small. Oh me.

Enjoy motherhood because it won't be long before you are a grandmother and can have the joy of spoiling the grand-kids and sending them back home to their parents. Woohoo!!

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Indeed. I just came from my grandson's first birthday party. Such a cute age. He's exploring, toddling around, starting to say a few words, and utterly adorable. Feels like just last week when that was my now-31-year-old son!

Has it been a year already Debbie? Time flies... seems like yesterday you were telling us of his birth. Wow!! Bless your heart watching him and remembering his father at that age. Man... you're gonna make me cry.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments They just grow up too fast. But then, so do we. In my mind, I'm still about 35. How on Earth did I just turn 62?? I blinked, and the years wooshed by!!

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments Wasn't sure where to put this. It isn't JAFF but it is on sale and listed as clean Regency Romance.

Bree Wolf has a reduced price on the second book in her Loves Second Chance Series.

Book one is still free at this time, if anyone is interested: Forgotten & Remembered: The Duke's Late Wife. There are 343 reviews with 54% at 5-stars and 27% at 4-stars. So... Wolf has quite a following.

The price on book 2 is now $0.99. Cursed & Cherished: The Duke's Wilful Wife. Of the 74 reviews, 61% were 5-stars and 20% were 4-stars.

There are 6-books in this series. Books 3&4 are $2.99 with books 5&6 at $3.99. Just thought I'd throw this out there for the Wolf fans.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments $0.99 reduced price, limited time Beauty and the Beast. It shows 453 reviews with 66% at 5-stars and 27% at 4-stars... that's pretty good.

It is book one in the Timeless Fairy Tales series. Books 2-4 are at $2.99, and books 5-9 are at $3.99. They can be read individually or as a stand-alone. I am a big fan of anything Beauty and the Beast. I doubt I'll get the others, but I want that 1st one.

message 178: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments Those who like Scottish/Welsh stories and are Claire Delacroix fans... there are a few sales in her series The Jewels of Kinfairlie. Several are at $0.99, book 3 is free, while book 2 is still at $4.99.

The Beauty Bride $0.99
The Rose Red Bride This is not the new cover shown on Amazon and is still $4.99
The Snow White Bride again, a different cover, but it is free.
The Ballad of Rosamunde a different cover, at $0.99.

Just thought I'd mention this... not sure what is a Cyber Monday sale or just the regular price. BookBub sent me a notice of the free book and I saw the others. I'm waiting to see if book 2 drops in price.

I haven't, but I've had two N&SFF people recommend it to me. Rita's read several so maybe check and see if she reviewed it.

message 185: by Mary (new)

Mary | 709 comments Sheila,if I'm not mistaken I recommended it to you shortly after I'd read it. I thought it as a fantastic story but for the life of me I can't remember why I loved it so much!!! The old grey matter isn't what it once was!

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments Thanks Teresa... in the last one, I was on vacation and sporting a hat against the California sun. I was still learning how to selfie and wasn't doing a very good job. That was a hoot. I saw several new pics of my friends and decided to change mine for the new year.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments No problem... I went a while before I attempted it. I am no tech geek and stumbled through the process until I got it added. I guess that is why I only showed half of my face the first time.

message 192: by Anji (new)

Anji | 275 comments I know that some of my friends here are also fans of crime and mystery fiction, too. If you're also into audiobooks, and have an Audible subscription, please can I recommend Stephen Fry's narration of the complete Sherlock Holmes canon? It'll still only cost one credit but it's nearly 72 hours of listening pleasure. I'm currently in the early stages of The Hound of the Baskervilles, which is quite appropriate, as my commutes take me over a stretch of moorland twice a day at the moment.

message 193: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Oh, talk about a classic!! Hound of the Baskervilles is great! A couple of years ago I waded through a recent Sherlock Holmes mystery by whoever it is that's taken up Arthur Conan Doyle's mantle, but it fell flat compared to the works by Holmes' creator. I'm not into audiobooks myself, but if I ever change my mind about that, I'll give Steven Fry a try. Thanks, Anji!

Oh how neat. I like his acting so I think I'd like him narrating Sherlock Holmes stories.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Here’s a fabulous giveaway by an author I really like, S. K. Rizzolo. She writes murder mysteries set in Regency London—not mostly romantic, but very true to the period. I already have all her books, but if you don’t you might want to enter. Tea and a teapot and kettle as well! https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog...

message 199: by Debbie (last edited Dec 18, 2017 03:06PM) (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 734 comments Destiny by Design- Leah's Journey has a lot of nods to Jane Austen and a hint of Pride and Prejudice. I haven't read the finished story yet, but I was a beta reader (my first time!! woot!) and the author is very talented. Sobering historical novel set in the early 1900s about one Jewish family's experience in Russia and Argentina, although I would NOT call it depressing; quite the contrary.

Anyway, there's a GR giveaway for a free copy of the book going on right now. Here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sh...
