Annika Zimmerman | 1 comments In An Invisible Thread, written by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski, Laura shares her incredible encounter with destiny. Not the typical type of fall in love and get married on a beach type of romantic destiny, but the type of destiny that makes you think that certain people are just meant to come into your life. Schroff skillfully and honestly, recounts the event in which she (a busy, successful business woman) runs into a homeless boy, Maurice, on the streets of Manhattan.

This wonderful story then outlines each and every unexpected account and learning experience they undergo together. Ranging from McDonald's to baseball games, the two bond and become best friends in a mother-son type of way. Struggling with the concerns of others, Laura grapples with where to draw the line in their relationship, but ultimately chooses to follow her heart and keep him in her life. Not only does Maurice open Laura's eyes to the reality of his violence and drug consumed environment, but he constantly teaches her. From the meaning of lunch in a brown paper bag to the unknown concept of blowing your nose, Maurice forces Laura to notice how different their two worlds are. Laura introduces Maurice to dinner tables, laundry, grocery shopping, and even front lawns. In doing so she realizes that although she's making a positive difference in his life, he is doing the same - and maybe even more - to hers.

With a little glimpse into Laura's past with an abusive and alcoholic father, readers are given the opportunity to understand why this motherly role is so important to her as well as the chance to acknowledge her hardships in comparison to Maurice's. Despite their different pasts and present, the two become some of the most important figures in each other's lives. Keeping in touch for decades to come, though drifting at times, Maurice and Laura's journey throughout this novel shows readers the true meaning of friendship, compassion, and invisible threads.
