I can't recall much about this Trilogy. The story happens on a different planet. The boy meets a spaceship pilot when young, and the pilot gives him a talisman (I believe that they find out it is a transmitter). I think that he loses an arm in the book at some point. Society is tiered, and he moves up (through subterfuge, I think). I really can't recall the exact details.

There really isn't any space travel in it (although the author has other books about space flight in that "world").
