8. What effect does the exorcism performed on Jeanette have?

None of the effect they want it to have, instead it makes Jeanette realize that these are not people she wants to look up to any more.

Lynn L | 152 comments The exorcism demonizes Jeanette in an official kind of way. The people in this group had little tolerance for the person Jeanette was. She no longer fit within their rigid boundaries.

None, apart from the fact it probably solidified her resolve to be/remain herself.

I think it did have an effect, it was the beginning when Jeanette started have her own ideas about God and who she was apart from this community she had been raised.

Pip | 1822 comments Winterson writes quite humourously about the exorcism, but it must have been a frightening experience. She recanted, and attempted to conform afterwards but in her heart she felt that she was right and it encouraged her to be independent, so that she was able to cope when she was finally kicked out of her home.
