Christopher Ariagno | 12 comments In the start of this book, Jack was told that he recently got a new job at a different station in the city. Though he gets a pay raise from his normal job, and better working conditions, it's going to be a lot more work and a little bit of intimidation. Because of this, the main character is nervous, afraid, and weary throughout the first section of the book.

One way the author emphasises this is of the introduction of characters. A rat (or a person from earth) entered in the bar and started to barter for some food for the night. As they were talking and Jack was making food, the rat brings up some secret stuff like the girl he was dating. For some reason, the rat was following Jack when he was talking to his girlfriend in the plaza. He knew her name, age, and what she looked like, so it sorta creeped Jack out, and made in weary about his future job dealing with rats and earthies (page 31).

The job that the main character is taking requires him to work with lots of people from earth, and the encounter that the author puts in sorta creeped him out. A random earthie was stealing stuff out of a recycler, so he confronted the earthie. The earthie then kicked him in the knee. When this happened, he had to think to himself, "Is my new job too much?". If he had to deal with this everyday, that would be pretty awful, which is exactly what the author tried to emphasize. (Page 10)

So with these two encounters with earthies and rats, it made the main character really weary and freaked out with what is in store for him in this next job. With the way these two encounters went with earthies; how will he be able to deal with all of the thousands that he will experience in his next job?

Jack isn't from earth he's like an alien/robot dude but he apparently looks human. The bar isn't on earth. He also hates every aspect of his job right now, so nothing will change if he gets a new job.

Ashley | 14 comments Why do you think Jack got moved to this new job? Also do you feel as though he looks down on the Earthlings?
