- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
both? I'm meeting the author in a week and I wanted to read a book by her before meeting her. and this is the only one I know of.

- Do you read new authors often?
yes

message 52: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments - What are you reading this week? It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author? I picked the book because it was the winner for the 2016 best romance and the Goodreads Choice Award Book Club is doing it as a book read this month.

- Do you read new authors often? Yes I find I do because I read based on people's recommendations or popularity and I'm also trying to make my way through classics. Out of the 20 books I read so far this year only 5 authors were authors that I've read before.

I picked the book first. I was looking for some new urban fantasy books and a friend recommended it. I had never heard of the author, but since it was free with Kindle Unlimited I gave it a try.

Do you read new authors often?
Yes. If the summary of a novel sound interesting I try it.

It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
It was chosen by my book club, but I haven't read Sinclair Lewis before.

Do you read new authors often? It's a mix. I do read new authors often, but I also have favourite authors that I go back to.

Jean Cole (joc724) | 324 comments What are you reading this week? The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers
Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author? Probably more the book. I've heard of it for many years but had no idea what it was about.
Do you read new authors often? I scan the NYT and WP book reviews for additions to my TBR so I like to think I read a variety of authors but I don't specifically seek out new authors.

message 61: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Kiefer - What are you reading this week?
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I knew the author was very popular with quite a few books out, so I thought I'd pick one to decide if I want to add the rest to my TBR!

- Do you read new authors often?
All the time. I only have a few others I'm trying to read everything from.

Mel | 177 comments What are you reading this week?
Conversations with Friends: A Novel by Sally Rooney

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked the book first - or rather, Penguin did. I just signed up for Penguin's First to Read program a few weeks ago, requested an ARC of this, and got it. I was looking for a place to fit it into one of my challenges and realized I'd never heard of the author before now, so thus here it went.

I do! I've found that some of my best reading discoveries come from picking up debut novels and discovering writers that way, or just picking up something that looks intriguing based on synopsis and realizing how strong that author's writing is.

I picked the book because it has been on my 2 read list and Linda Abbott is a new author to me.
- Do you read new authors often?
Probably half the books I read every month are new authors to me and I read about 16 books per month

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1731 comments What are you reading this week? The Sudden Appearance of Hope The Sudden Appearance of Hope by Claire North

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked the book first and realized that it would fit into this prompt.

Do you read new authors often?
One of the reasons I joined this challenge a few years ago was to discover new authors. I am happy to say that it is working. My reading list has expanded to include many genres and authors. So currently I would have to say yes. :)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments What are you reading this week?
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I wanted to read something by Steinbeck as I love classics and he's an author I've always wanted to read but not got around to. I might have read The Grapes of Wrath instead but I'd have had to join the library wait list and I wanted to read right away.

Do you read new authors often?
Yes, lots! I'd say about two thirds of my 2017 reads so far have been new authors for me.

message 66: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesbee) What are you reading this week?
Confessions of a Domestic Failure by Bunmi Laditan
Confessions of a Domestic Failure by Bunmi Laditan

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
Both? I had actually picked a different book originally, but realized I had read that author before so when I got around to it, I would find something different. Then recently I found out Bunmi (who I follow on Facebook and LOVE) was writing a book. So of course I wanted to read it because I love her Facebook posts she shares (Honest Toddler posts as well!). Then while reading the book this past week, I realized I haven't read anything by her (Facebook doesn't count, haha!) as this was her first novel. So I decided to use this book for this week's prompt!

Do you read new authors often?
I think so. I think I do a good variation between my repeat authors and new ones. I love finding new authors who have many books out, so that if I enjoy their book, I have a lot more goodies to choose from!!

message 67: by Tamsin (new)

Tamsin Parke | 36 comments - What are you reading this week?
I am reading What are You Like?

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I saw a panel of authors discussing books and thought the author's viewpoints on other writing were interesting - she had a good turn of phrase and seemed to have real insight into people.
This was the only book of hers that was currently on my local library shelves.

- Do you read new authors often?
About 50% of the books I read are from authors I haven't read before. 10% would be from authors I see or hear about and then immediately have to chase down their work.

Sunbolt (The Sunbolt Chronicles, #1) by Intisar Khanani

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
It was a book recommendation, so I picked the book first.

- Do you read new authors often?
Before the challenge and for adult novels, almost never (just borrowed books). Since the challenge, lots of them. For my children reads, I always picked new authors following my mood at the bookstore or the library, so no change there.

Almost Adulting All You Need to Know to Get It Together (Sort Of) by Arden Rose

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked the book first. I was reading it when I realized I was on this topic & that it would fit.

Do you read new authors often?
Yes, very often. I have quite varied reading tastes, so that leads me to new authors. I only have 2 contemporary authors that I follow & read all of their releases. This year, I actually put together a list of 12 authors I've been meaning to read, and am trying to read one per month. That's been really fun.

I read Nora Roberts Land by Ava Miles

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I don't know why I picked this one. I am pretty sure it was because I love Nora Roberts books and thought this would be a great little read. ( I now have a new series to read! lol)

Do you read new authors often?
I try to read a couple new author's every year. These challenges have helped me branch out from my favorite authors and try new books I might not have read before.

I picked the book first, I prefer to have interesting plots rather than flowery language. It takes a lot to turn me off of a book
- Do you read new authors often?
I do. I'm trying to read one of every author in my grandma's library so that I have a better idea of what I want to keep once she moves and doesn't have space for her 2000+ books.

Exposure by Helen Dunmore

It was "chosen" for me by randomization of my TBR list for another challenge, and fit this category. I'm not sure why I added it in the first place, though.
- Do you read new authors often?
Yes, especially this year. I also like series, so some of each.

message 84: by Cristin (new)

Cristin | 54 comments What are you reading this week?
The House of Mirth

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
I picked the book first. It was on my (rather extensive) list of books I probably should have read by now, since I was an English Lit. major and am now 15+ years out of college.

Do you read new authors often?
I am starting to read them more often as I work through my list; however, I will go through big stretches of reading nothing but favorite authors' unread back-lists, new works, or re-reads.

message 85: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments What are you reading this week? The Tremor of Forgery by Patricia Highsmith

Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author? I was interested in discovering Patricia Highsmith, a rather prolific American author who wrote suspenseful novels often set in exotic locales. I also had this book sitting around for a while, so it seemed liked a win-win all around.

Do you read new authors often? Yes.

Prime Target by Ellis Vidler

- Did you pick the book first or were you interested in a particular author?
The book first, I already had it on my kindle and it was on my TBR list

- Do you read new authors often?
Yes, I try to. I like reading indie and self-publishing authors. I try to give a lot of free kindle books a chance because I have previously found a few authors' books that I absolutely love and I end up buying/reading more of their books.
