it's time to nominate for our February group read already! You are welcome to nominate books by Golden Age authors, or titles which were written later but are set during the Golden Age. Just one nomination per group member, please.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 1036 comments Beat me to it, Rosina! I was thinking it was time to put forward a Michael Innes novel again. My favorites! You will have my vote.

The Royal Box looks good, Carol. I have quickly nabbed a cheap second hand copy, as it is not on kindle and I fear it might be hard for some to get hold of.

Death at the President's Lodging is a good read. I've read that before - so two good suggestions already :)

Michelle (michelleae) I shall be on a book buying moratorium in 2017 apart from book club books. So I want an excuse to buy this one:

The Poisoned Chocolates Case

As I've heard it's good and an interesting take on the genre, so would like to nominate that please. I think there is a new edition out with another potential solution added by Martin Edwards.

I had also been planning to nominate The Poisoned Chocolates Case, but you got in first, Michelle!

I remember loving this book by Anthony Berkeley as a teenager, so am keen to reread it in the new British Library Crime Classics edition you mentioned.

I also enjoyed Death at the President's Lodgings and have been meaning to read more by Michael Innes.

Frances Parkinson Keyes is an author I don't think I've read anything by, who sounds very interesting too. As you say, Susan, great suggestions already!

I'll also nominate The Poisoned Chocolates Case by Anthony Berkeley as well. I never read the book before, but I heard a lot of good things about it and it's definitely on my list of future reads.

Jan C (woeisme) | 1823 comments I have read Poisoned Chocolates Case and enjoyed it. I recently discovered that I have 2 copies of the Michael Innes book, one on kindle and one in paper, presumably because I had forgotten all about having a Kindle copy.

A month ago I believe this was a $1.99 special. Glad I picked it up then. It is the basis for the movie Topkapi, which I remember enjoying years ago.

I have only read one Eric Ambler, but enjoyed it very much. Oh, spoilt for choice this time! Decisions, decisions...

message 16: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Yes ,certainly is a difficult choice this time. I'm hoping that those that don't win will be resubmitted for future polls

I think Death at the President's Lodging has been nominated before, or perhaps I am incorrect?

Thanks Judy, great to be with the group

message 19: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 1036 comments Hi, Susan, yes, Death at the President’s Lodging (John Appleby mystery #1) was nominated for September; I believe it tied for second in the poll? And Appleby’s End (John Appleby mystery #10) was nominated in April and May. Is there a rule against nominating the same book more than once if it doesn’t win? I see other books being nominated more than once, such as Fer de Lance.

message 20: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 11248 comments Mod
No, there's no rule against it, Abigail. We've had several books nominated more than once and sometimes they win through in the end! :)

I would love to re-read Death at the President's Lodging. I think that is edging it for me, this month. However, my copy of The Royal Box turned up yesterday...

Any more nominations? I'd like to get the poll up this weekend, a bit early this month because of Christmas.

Death at the President's Lodging has taken an early lead - but there's a long way to go yet...

They all look good and are available at some library in some format so I voted for the only one that was already on my TBR list - I would so like to whittle that list down.

Michael Innes has quite a lead now! I read Death at the President's Lodging not so long ago and, if it wins, I think it will make for a great discussion. :)

Lynne Pennington (bluemoonladylynne) | 112 comments President's Lodging gets my vote too---new author for me, which is always fun!

There has been a resurgence in the Poisoned Chocolates Case, but let's see whether it will be enough for a win? Possibly a book that will deserve a second nomination?

message 31: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 11248 comments Mod
Innes still has quite a lead, but we'll see! :)

I think that the Inspector Appleby books get better as you progress in the series but am glad that this has won.

Jessica-sim | 401 comments Wasn't sure if I was going to participate this months, as I've put myself on a book buying budget and my library doesn't have it, but audible has it! And it's read with by a good voice (Stephen Hogan). Looking forward to it.

Rosina (rosinarowantree) | 1135 comments Forf those who are listening, the Look Inside feature on Amazon (UK. at least) allows you to look at the plan of the college!

I'm not sure if it would be wrong to post the plan on the site, but at least it is available.
