SOLVED. YA/ Children's book. Best friends getting into hijinks on a ranch, part of a series. [s]

A children's/YA book with two boys in their early to mid teens who are best friends, and I feel like it was part of a series where each book they'd go on adventures. The one I remember they visited the relatives of one of the boys (I think) who lived on a ranch, and they get up to various hijinks on the ranch. I can't remember for sure, but I probably checked it out from the library and read it in the late 90s, although it was probably published earlier. The cover was that typical 90s-style illustration of a scene from the book, tan colors. One of the boys possibly had a very weird nickname that everyone called him?

Is there a special story about one of the horses/animals?

Do the boys travel alone to the ranch or do their families accompany them? Do they live in a large city?

I found it when I was looking through Gary Paulsen (RIP) books - it was Cowpokes and Desperadoes. Not tan, but everything else I remembered was right!
