So this is a giveaway spot for any book of our choice? Obviously we can't get any combo style points for this one, but can we get other style points if possible?

Yes. No combo points, but all other styles are available to you. It came about years ago, so that you could read a book you were wanting to read, or with another group, that you just couldn't fit anywhere.

Yep, that's it 100%! Can be a lot harder to choose than it looks, one season I think we all had trouble finding a book to fit.

At the moment, I have a book that fits that if nothing else in the 10s works, and I can get 10 style points because it's nonfiction. It's also exactly 100 pages, so won't get any chunky style points, so not sure if I'll use it or not.

I think Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens is a Square Peg... can I just get a second opinion, please?

I'm not quite sure if I get to this... only if I survive Crime and Punishment which I am currently reading and rather enjoyed (only on page 106).

I don't see anything on Martin that would be a combo. 1844, he lived to 58, set in the UK, etc.

We're carrying the 1958 shown on GR. There has been lots of switching around on that, but we're going to go with it, so you're good on that score, and I don't see anything else. It is a YA Assignment, though with a Lexile of 590, so no LiT or Oldies points.

I think that White Heat by M.J. McGrath is a square peg. (copyright 2011). The author is still alive, it hasn't won any awards that I could find, but want to double check that I haven't missed anything.

Thanks! I realize I can only use Square Peg once, but it's a group read for a group that I've neglected for some time due to the darkness of their last few group reads (I'm not into dark novels anymore).

I am enjoying it and am 89 percent of the way through it, and plan to finish today (GR and it's progress percentages are rather handy at times.)

It took a lot of shelf searching! I was going to read some short stories by either Gogol or Chekov but both died young. Same with the Brontës, and some of the others I'd planned were 1600-1700s.

But I'm glad this works! And I've heard great things so I'm looking forward to it :)

I really enjoyed the Count of Monte Cristo. There were some moments of diasssociation from the plot of the most recent movie version that were disconcerting and some significant orientalism later in the book that felt archaic, but overall it was a great read. Good luck with it. Im going for part two of one of the long Chinese classics for this task The Three Kingdoms: The Sleeping Dragon.
