Spoilers? - I might mention things that happen slightly ahead of where you are in the book, but since I'm only 51% done myself, I don't give any major surprises away. But do be warned.
The Main Characters
The Captain/Red Knight - the main character, perhaps from the east, hired by the abbess to defend the convent. Is attracted to Amica. In his early 20s, but already a season fighter.
The Abbess - head of the convent at Lissen Carak. The convent is a castle like keep, surrounded by villages like Lorica. Hires the captain and his soldiers to defend the convent.
Amica - Novice at the convent , love interest of the Captain. She has freaky tattoos and probably a dark past. But for the most part, she's just attractive and the Red Knight pursues her. A gifted healer.
The Queen & The King - Live in the castle Harndon, the capital of Albin. De Vrailly arrives and informs the king he wants to serve him and then take the crown for himself when the king dies. The king challenges de Vrailly to a joust and the king wins. The king, his knights and de Vrailly head to Albinkirk to battle the wild when they hear the city is under seige. The Queen is beautiful (of course), but also clever. She attempts to help the king's efforts by organizing supply trains.
Thorn - the main villian, uses mind control to force the Wild to attack Albinkirk and Lissen Carak
Peter - is a slave in one of the conveys. He escapes when the convoy is attacked by the Wild and eventually gets his yoke off. Joins the Sassog tribe, which is allied sort of with Thorn.
Harmodius - the King's elderly magician. Like everyone else, he is in love with the queen. Early on, just doing experiments. Later, he goes off exploring and joins Random's convoy. There's a long chapter where he's trying to impress the queen with some ground breaking magical experiment. I believe what he discover is he can pull magic energy from external sources, not having to always rely on his own strength, which is good because he's elderly and growing weary. But if anyone can explain it better, please do.
Mag - a widowed seamstress living in a village near the Convent. She's forced out of her home and into the Convent keep when it becomes obvious the Wild is attacking.
Ser Jean de Vrailly - Described as a handsome, powerful knight. Even the Queen is smitten. Claims to be the best knight in the world. He's arrogant, although not without reason. He's powerful and easily angered. He, his cousin and his knights come to Albin from the east, which is described like France and his name conveys that connotation. Deeply religious, says an angel is guiding his actions. Want to be king of Albin and views Albin knights as weak. He immediately burns down an inn, kills the sheriff, picks a fight with Ser Gawin. See the King & Queen entry for more details.
Gaston - cousin of Jean de Vrailly, he is a counter weight, tries to calm down problems Jean de Vrailly keeps stirring up.
Ser Gawin Murien (Hard hands) - a knight loafing in the Harndon court, sent out by the King to prove himself. Bested by De Vrailly (although, fighting at a disadvantage without armour and the proper sword) at the Dormling Inn. Initially de Varilly takes Gawin hostage and intends to sell him back to the king, but the Earl of Towbray convinces de Varilly to release him. Gawin then joins up with Random's convoy. Suffers burns but is saved by Harmondius. Later fights valiantly against the trolls. Regrets being mean to his younger brother growing up.
Lesser characters around Lissen Carak
Prior Ser Mark Wishard - a knight wandering around, sees where the bear attacked the city of Lorica, tries to hunt down the bear. Otherwise, I'm not sure why he was introduced.
Set John Wishart - No idea?
Ser Milus - No idea?
The Priest - At the convent, resents the abbess always over ruling him. Doesn't want the Red Knight at the convent. Abbess says he's in love with her. Probably a traitor.
Sister Merriam - Just another nun at the convent. Am I missing something here?
Characters in Harndon, capital of Albin
Edward - Weapon smith's apprentice. They are mixing explosives. We keep revisiting them, where they are mixing salt and sulfur, but I'm not sure why.
Tad (Thaddeus) Pyel - Master weapons smith. Edward's master, right?
Characters outside Harndon and Lissen Carak
Earl of Towbray - Just some earl. I believe he initially summons de Vrailly for some work. Doesn't do much.
Master Blodget - The Inn Keeper of Dormling. His inn is burned down by Jean De Vrailly because he allowed Gawin to stay in a prime room that de Vrailly wanted. Enters a profit sharing agreement with Random, who's already married the Keeper's daughter.
Ser John Crawford - The Captain at Albinkirk with an undersized army to defend the city. Albinkirk has great wealth because of its importance in the fur trade routes.
Ser Alcaeus - A knight who was accompanying a convoy of fifty wagons on the Behnburg Road. Arrives at Albinkirk and warns Crawford the Wild is coming. Helps defend Albinkirk during the siege. Cousin to some elderly emperor, at least he claims.
The Wyrm - A dragon/diety type creature the hill people (rural people) make sacrifices to. They believe in exchange, he will keep the outwallers from attacking them.
Characters in the Red Knight's company
Michael is the captain's squire. Falls in love with Kaitlin, a girl at the convent.
Bad Tom, Gelfred and Sauce are the Red Knight's lieutenants. Sauce is one of the few women fighters.
Amy's Hob is a man at arms for the captain. Not very important.
Jacques is the captain's personal bodyguard. Favors a crossbow.
Traders/ Characters coming for the fair at Lissen Carak:
I kept getting the Lachlans and Random convoys mixed up. Random has goods, Lachlan cattle.
Ranald Lachlan - a man at arms in the king's court, goes to help his brother's convoy.
Hector Lachlan - a drover hundreds of cattle with a small army to protect it. Refuses to pay tolls. Enters a profit sharing agreement with the Keeper of Dormling in exchange for more soldiers.
Gerald Random - musters a merchant convoy of forty-five wagons, sixty traders - drapers, weavers, goldsmiths, grocers, and bladesmiths - and eighteen soldiers for protection. They leaves Harndon heading north to the great market fair of Lissen Carak. Harmodius and Ser Gawin join up with them
Old Bob, Guilbert - Random's soldiers, I think?
Harold and Bill Redemede - Harold the Forester, briefly share a fire and meal with Ranalad Lachlan on the road. Bill is a Jack looking to recruit. Jacks are humans loyal to the Wild
