SOLVED. Fantasy: human starts learning magic as the only human at an elven school

Hey all,

A couple of years ago I read this book whos title I can't seem to remember :(

Plot:
Main character is a human with some sort of an ability (in his case it was some sort of time freezing) due to which he is allowed to study magic as the only human on a school for elves. Eventually the students have to take a test in a group in which they have to travel over an open iceland and battle a giant etc. There is one elf who seem to hate the main character, his ability is creating fire.

Any help is appreciated!

it's Die Zauberer (german) or De Tovenaar (Dutch). There is currently no english translation as far as I could find.
