SOLVED. YA 90's Baseball player struggles with Leukemia/ other Cancer. [s]

Hi All,

I was feeling a bit of nostalgia from seeing an animorphs book get dusted off in a box of my books from childhood. I was thinking about a book that was part of a series of books about a kid who is the [baseball pitcher?] for his team, who then comes down with Leukemia or some other form of cancer. From what I can remember, he ends up getting really sick and not being able to pay anymore.

Note: I could have sworn it was a Matt Christopher book, but I looked through his collection and didn't see it - I may have missed it. This would have been a YA sports book/collection from the 90's, as I was 6-16 in the 90's.

I CANNOT believe this thread, which is what, 6 years old? I tried to find this book name about 7 years ago for my kids. I was obsessed with this book and the others by Alfred Slote. I enlisted the help of a librarian in my search but we could not figure out the name. My kids are way past the age of reading this but I'm getting it anyway. Thank you so much for those who replied for solving this mystery for me.
