Tristram Shandy Dear Pickwickians,

With Christmas coming nearer and nearer, I think it would be a good idea to post the reading schedule for our next Christmas Read, which we are all sure to enjoy (I'm looking at you, Everyman!), here. Since the book falls into three parts only, this is quite an easy task. And it will be performed using European dates ;-)

01/12/2016 - 07/12/2016: Part I
08/12/2016 - 14/12/2016: Part II
15/12/2016 - 22/12/2016: Part III

This schedule means that we will have some time around Christmas to bestow on things non-Dickensian.

Just one more question: If we want to keep Thursday our day for starting a new reading week, we might already start our next major novel, Great Expectations on 29 December. Or would you rather wait until 05 January?

Linda | 712 comments For Kim :)

12/1/16 - 12/7/16: Part I
12/8/16 - 12/14/16: Part II
12/15/16 - 12/22/16: Part III

Peter I'm fine for either date to begin Great Expectations. My preference would be 05 January simply for the symmetry. New book, new year.

Linda | 712 comments As to GE, I would welcome a Dec 29th start, but would be fine with waiting until January if it's more convenient for other readers.

Bill (coloradobill) I'm in for both. Look forward to reading Dickens along with others, which will be a first for me, so any start date is most welcomed.

Hmmm...on second thought I am leaning towards Peter's reasoning for a Jan 5th start date. But again, either is fine with me.

Thanks Linda, that little pain in my head was getting bigger seeing those dates all messed up again, but you came to the rescue!

Vanessa Winn | 364 comments Hello Pickwickians,

I'm hoping to rejoin you for the Xmas read. I've missed discussing Dickens with this group... I have an old Chapman & Hall edition (the only date I can find in it is his preface of 1843) of his Christmas Books, including The Battle of Life. Looking forward to reading it, and maybe getting into the spirit... :)

Tristram Shandy Hello Vanessa,

It's good to have you back! And Christmas is always a good time to pick up old acquaintances. I don't know The Battle of Life yet and sincerely hope it will be a more rewarding read than The Cricket and The Chimes, two works that brought out the grump in me. And the grump is normally deeply, deeply buried under layers of kindness and magnanimity ;-)

Hi Vanessa

Good to have you back with us Pickwickians. The Christmas read and then Great Expectations. Life can't get much better than that.

January 5 would be lovely for me as I will be back on my regular schedule. During the week between Christmas and New Year I have a great deal of event planning to do plus our schedule is all out of whack as all 3 of my kids are out of school/college/univ. (1 in each by Canadian terms even though I'm in the US)

Kim Welcome back Vanessa, it's good to see you here.

Oh, Tristram, you're a grump.

Eventually. But, as I said, you have to find your way through blubber of kindness and magnanimity. Ask my colleagues at work ;-) They have clear instructions as to what to say.

Bill (coloradobill) Got a nice start on The Battle of Life. Kind of neat to have started it with just finishing The Chimes. So far, Battle of Life has me wanting to read more, while after hitting parts three through four of The Chimes I read out of a self imposed compliance to finishing a Dickens' story. Will throw out a couple quotes that I really enjoyed in a future posts.

Tristram Shandy Hi everyone,

I don't really know who is to open the thread on Chapter 1 this week - Kim or me. I might do it on Wednesday, because at the moment my wife and I are very busy preparing the Christmas party for our son's class at school tomorrow. It's great fun doing this but it also takes quite some time. ;-)

Vanessa Winn | 364 comments Many thanks, Tristram, Peter, and Kim for the welcome back! I'm glad the thread isn't open yet, because I'm just starting The Battle this week... but looking forward to it :)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I'm confused with the dates and will go back ...

But I'd vote for a Janaury start for Great Expectations. Now to sort out when exactly in Decmeber the Christmas read starts ...

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Ah it looks as if it's the 1st - in which case I'm behind again already! Rats!
