Sophie Holden (namelessteen) | 2 comments I really like the map at the beginning! and the style is really cool, deff helped me out of my post-book thief reading slump

message 52: by Jas (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jas It's a little tough getting used to the writing style, but I think I like it so far. I want to power through it and find out where this story's going to go.

I think it was a metaphor..

Loch | 4 comments This is a quick read so far, but e. lockhart's writing style slightly annoys me. Anyone else?

Hillary (noodlez88) | 13 comments I like the book so far. A fast read for such a small book! One of the weirdest families I have ever read about.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahhhhh I'm loving it so far! So many questions and theories are flying around in my head. I really love her descriptions of her family and of her pain. It is written so poetically and beautifully. I can't wait to find out what this is all about! Soooo, back to reading :)

Lindsey (heylindsey) This book is so creatively written, but I'm having a hard time visualizing the setting and the characters. I might have a hard time getting through this book to be honest.

Lauren (bookworm1987) | 11 comments Definitely moving a little slow for me, but I want to find out what happens at the end. So I will keep reading.

message 59: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna reANNAmatedd (whattawiseguy) This is my second E. Lockhart book (first being The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks which is an all time favorite) and her writing is even better than before in this! I adore how mysterious this is and how unique it is already. I don't want to put it down!

Sara Williams (sarafwilliams) BUT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN Omg

I love the whole atmosphere of this book. The mysterious feeling and the dark tone of the book are keeping me intrigued! I'm interested to see where things go. Does anybody else not trust Gat? He's so strange to me.

whoufflestories (bookpond) | 9 comments I am loving this. It's so mysterious.

message 63: by Caryn (last edited Jun 08, 2014 11:25AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Caryn | 3 comments I am definitely enjoying this so far, and I really want to keep reading. The writing style is just creepy enough that it makes you wonder what's really going on!

I definitely agree about Gat being a little off, but all of the characters feel a bit off right now.

Andrew (BritBookBoy) (britbookboy) This book is gloriously sinister and mysterious so far. The writing style is quite unlike most other books I've read, which is definitely keeping me extremely engaged.

I'm not sure I trust Gat, like at all, or the way the Sinclairs bury all their feelings and traumatic experiences. I'm intrigued to find out how Cadence ended up in the water cracking her head against the rocks, something seems up with that. Especially as Gat has gone MIA since then.

Definitely agree with people saying all the characters are quite strange and inscrutable through to this point in the book!

Camille Andrea Tesoro (bookhunter07) | 1 comments I have mixed feelings about this book.. It seems intriguing and mysterious at the same time. I also felt the other characters are not introduced well, like the other Liars especially Mirren and Johnny.. I want to know more about them as he story unfolds.

Jenny (juliababyjen) I am loving the book so far! Lots of metaphors. I like the style of writing. I'm really curious about her "accident" and how that happened. Can't wait to read more!

Annie Evelyn (annieevelyn) | 1 comments Gah I love it so far! I love the way the "chapters" are really short and chopped up. The amount of characters was a little overwhelming, but I think I'm getting it!

message 68: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy So I just started it tonight, I'm only on page 30, and already I don't want to put this book down. If I didn't have work in the morning, there's a good chance I'd just read this all the way through tonight. Her description of her Dad "shooting" her confused the heck out of me at first. But once I re-read it a couple times I got it.

Amy Annie wrote: "The amount of characters was a little overwhelming, but I think I'm getting it!"

Yeah I had to reference the family a tree a couple of times. I'm happy they have the map of the island, and the family tree in the book. Definitely helps!

Nicole | 4 comments I am really enjoying this so far. The writing is very atmospheric and has a creepy undertone. I'm not sure what happened to Cadence but I have a sneaking suspicion Gat is involved...

Amy Nicole wrote: "I'm not sure what happened to Cadence but I have a sneaking suspicion Gat is involved..."

That's pretty smart actually. I didn't even think of that!

Veronica Ross (theotherveronicaa) | 1 comments I don't really know how I feel about this honestly. Sometimes the metaphors throw me a little since i can't Instantly catch on to if it's metaphor or not. Also, I'm not connected to any of the characters and I don't know if I ever will be. But I am enjoying it!

Sarah | 2 comments It's very good a little weird sometimes but it's good and some of the "metaphors" are confusing but I really like it!!

message 74: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Leon (amandaleon) Anybody finding this really dull and predictable? The main character seems like she thinks she's more clever than she actually is.

message 75: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 1 comments Just started it. I'm so intrigued!

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) It seems that the main character has a psychiatric problem. :| I'm trying to decipher things out. it's one pretty weird book.

message 77: by Ashley (last edited Jun 13, 2014 10:18PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ashley (whodowninwhoville) | 6 comments I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY ARE LIARS. Did they become liars in the sense that, once Gat joined them, they became aware of their faux superiority and general disjoint from society/reality? That the family just sweeps everything under the rug and everyone is in denial/lies to themselves to get through the day? Is it about turning a blind eye/lying by omission? Or is this about something more sinister connected to the cover up of Cadence's accident? *pondering intensifies*
Regardless, I really like the prose so far. Everything seems so punctuated - so urgent and abrupt. The metaphors are heavy-handed at times, but since it's a consistent style so far rather than occassional drop-ins, I can get on board with it.
Looking forward to exploring the Sinclairs' secrets!

Mom2triplets04 | 40 comments What the heck did I just read? There's so many characters I can't keep track of who is who. Love the fact that the chapters are short so I feel like I'm moving quickly through the book. But not liking that I have to read sentences more than once to figure out what the heck I just read. Like the shooting after the dad left them. And to come on here and find out it never happened. Uggg so confusing. I really am not connected to any of the characters yet as they are all only mentioned briefly. Feel bad that no one is there for her after the accident. I just find this book frustrating right now but will continue on.

Yolanda Casica (cyphergreen6879) The most memorable thing I can take away from the book right now is the writing style. It's fresh and interesting. The author has a distinctive prose that sucks you into the lives of the characters....The characters. Well, I've read about eccentric wealthy people before so I'm not surprised by how they act or how their world views are described. Though, I do admit to getting confused at times with the descriptive language. I also would like to punch Gat for reasons.
Enjoying the story so far.

Delaney Butterfield (delaneybutterfield) This book is so hard to put into words. It's labeled as contemporary but feels like mystery or paranormal or something. I'm almost getting a Mara Dyer-like feel from this book. It's so mysterious though and it's impossible to put down!!

Ryoku Light | 14 comments So unique I am loving how this is written. Like how she describes pain is way cool.. I cannot wait to read more!

message 82: by Shaery (last edited Jun 17, 2014 10:12AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Shaery (shaerysniffler) The book does seem to have a lot of metaphors and in vague details. I have read more to figure out my feelings towards this book.

Marie C (castonguaymarieeve) | 1 comments I don't know how to feel about this book so far:P I think i like it, but there are some things that i had to read like 5 times to understand(When her father "shoots" her, quite the metaphor) I don't really like Gat and I'm not sure what's gonna happen. I think Gat has something to do with the accident, but I don't quite know how.

Abbi Fister (abbiky) | 1 comments Mac wrote: "Can we all just take a minute and appreciate how beautiful the book is without the dust cover. i mean it's so pretty XD"

I know, right! It's gorgeous!!!

Aimee | 1 comments I am so confused about what is happening right now

message 86: by Alea (new) - rated it 4 stars

Alea (coffeebookslea) This is so intriguing! I just started the book an hour ago and I'm already going on to part two! I wonder what made her go into the water and why she cannot remember doing it? This is really interesting so far!

Hayley | 11 comments This book is very descriptive. I bought the book yesterday and just finished reading part 1. What is happening to her? Why did she go in the water and why doesn't she remember? What is happening with her and Gat? So many question are with me at the end of part 1.

acascia | 5 comments I have a headache after reading her describe her headaches. I guess that's good because it shows that the writing is resonating with me, but the writing is also creeping me out.. It's so strange, mysterious, and, of course, beautiful.

Brittany (bdillardx) Because of all the metaphors and interesting writing style, it's hard to decipher what is truth and what is lie or an exaggeration. So many questions, and Lockhart gives no answers!

message 90: by nico (new)

nico (nikkolaii) I just started and it's SOO mysterious and creepy but I love it! :)

Elizabeth (Elzburg) (elzburg) | 5 comments Them metaphors tho!

message 92: by Ning (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ning (dragonceres) | 3 comments Love the metaphors! Especially the Dad one with the gun at the beginning! I was so shocked until I realized it is a metaphor lol

The metaphors does get a bit tiresome though especially the ones with her brain bleeding everywhere when she talks about her migraines. Still the book feels mysterious and I'm enjoying how fast it's reading.

There are way too many characters and none of them are really fleshed out or important other than Gat. I wonder if that changes later in the book.

Mariana Gascon | 4 comments Im starting to read it but, from what I read its going good and im lovin it

Bernadette Davis (godblessthenightowls) | 5 comments I can barely put my thoughts into sentences. I don't really trust any of the characters. I just feel like Cady is an unreliable narrator. Like maybe she is mentally insane and none of this really happened? I love the writing style though. The use of so many metaphors (possibly overuse) reminds me of Ray Bradbury. Just more modern. The plot is intriguing and I can't wait to finish.
