Last month I read The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. I highly recommend it. The audio book is fantastic!
What do you guys think, could I count Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for this category?? Someone's review here on Goodreads mentions this..."Rowling takes us in a "brief" journey into the fantastic world of these beast and creatures, The Great thing here is that some of those are common, even famous among our "Real" world.. such as the paranormal, mysterious creatures like "Loch Ness" , "Bigfoot" and even the trolls.
or the legendary from famous myths and legends like "Dragons", "Phoenix" ,"Sphinx" and even unicorn"
I think it counts? Anyone else have an opinion on whether I could count this??
The Canine Kalevala is based on The Kalevala. It's a children's book but adults like them, too. I read this last year. For some reason books by Kunnas are popular in some of the toughest prisons in the US, or so my friend remembers hearing. Also Medea would probably count.
I am reading for this prompt a just published first novel by Kathleen Arden entitled 'The Bear and the Nightingale' - based in Russian myth and folk tales. So far it is really good.

I think it would definitely count for the prompt about having a mythical creature; as for based on mythology, it's kind of a stretch. Like this has creatures that appear in mythological stories, but it doesn't really involve the myths themselves. Up to you as to how strict you want to be.
I read The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1: The Faust Act today. I'm debating counting it toward this prompt, since it seemed so loosely based on mythology. There were many gods/myths mentioned, but it didn't really feel like I got a good sense of the myths themselves.

Would "Grendel" by John Gardner work? It's a reselling of the Old English poem, Beowulf, from the perspective of the antagonist.

I just Googled "is Beowulf a myth" and got several pages saying YES, it is based on Norse / Danish mythology.

I just read (re-read, as I first read it when I was younger) Lure of the Dark by Sarah Sargent for this prompt. It brings Norse mythology (the story of Loki) into the modern world, and parallels those struggles with the peer pressure that teens face today. I love this book as a reread as much as I remember liking it originally.
Still thinking on this topic and wondering if anything to do with Wonder Woman would fit - being that it is said she was made by Zeus
Amanda wrote: "Still thinking on this topic and wondering if anything to do with Wonder Woman would fit - being that it is said she was made by Zeus"The Amazons are from Greek mythology so it would definitely work
I just read "Don't Breathe a Word" by Jennifer McMahon. It's about fairies and how they interacted with the real world. Loved it
I just read Akata Witch and it was so refreshing to read a fantasy book not set in the western world. The mythology aspect is intertwined with the magic system. Essentially, our main character finds out that in addition to magic being a real thing, there are mystical gods / beings that are not merely folk tales. It is middle grade (maybe early YA?) but it's really not overly angsty. I gave it 3 stars because I enjoyed it, but some of the characters really got on my nerves. Very interested in seeing where the author goes with it in the second installment.
I do a re-read of "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown for this Category. Would the Mythos of the illuminati count ?
I read The Princess and the Warrior: A Tale of Two Volcanoes based on Mexican mythology surrounding Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.
Marianne wrote: "Odd and the frost giants by Neil Gaiman is a short children's book that would fit here."and, hey! Neil Gaiman (almost guaranteed to be a fun read (I own it))

I would also recommend Hades' Daughter which is the first book of The Troy Game Series.
