A book that's becoming a movie on 2017 is one of the few (maybe the only) repeat/update from the 2016 list. I for one am glad to see it. I admit that today (at work, shhhhh) I Googled "books becoming movies in 2017." Here's what I found:

All the Bright Places -- absolutely loved this book
Ready Player One -- on my TBR
Wonder -- *heart melts with fondness*
A Dog's Purpose -- the trailer for this looks amazing (see also "nonhuman perspective")
The Bell Jar -- what the what?
A Wrinkle in Time

That's a great book. I read it this year. I also read Ready Player One and Wonder this year. They are saying that The Silver Chair is going to be a movie next year. I will believe THAT when I see it, but I would like to read it so maybe I will read it just in case. The book becoming a movie 2016 that I read ended up not being released :) Oh well!

I have a hard time with this sort of category every time we have it, because either I've read the book already, or I'm not interested. I'd much prefer a "book that was made into a movie in any year" category.

IMDB has it with a Nov. 22, 2017 release date. Starring Johnny Depp as Poirot and costarring Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley.

It is listed on IMDB as well, and on another list for 2017 book-to-movie releases. My Friend Dahmer was also on both those lists, which I think will be my choice.

Yup totally true. Kenneth Branaugh will direct and star as Poirot, with lots of big names in the cast. It's slated to come out a year from now, which also means they expect it to be good.

This category should be notoriously difficult to predict very far in advance. Movies get stuck in development hell at the drop of a hat. Read lists with caution and you can't trust everything on IMDB, especially early in development.

I hate to tell you that Ready Player One is scheduled for 2018, as is A Wrinkle in Time. All the Bright Places has been in pre-production for ages with zero chatter lately. I wouldn't hold your breath for The Silver Chair next year either.

There are some movies where you can interpret the release year for this challenge. Due to awards regulations, this year's eligible movies must be released in 2016, but only in L.A. To keep ALL the movies from releasing at the same time, some will release there in December but not go into wide release to the rest of the country until January 2017 or even later. I feel these could count for the 2017 prompt even if you see them officially listed as a 2016 movie. For example:

A Monster Calls Jan 1 UK, Jan 6 wide US
Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race wide release Jan 6
Live by Night wide release on January 13

I think Wonder, A Dog's Purpose, The Zookeeper's Wife, The Dark Tower, The Circle, My Friend Dahmer, The House of Tomorrow, The Lost City of Z, and The Glass Castle are pretty safe bets.

I hope it is. That's one of the books I was trying to squeeze in, and this is a prompt that I'm struggling with. It exists in both of my challenges, and I'm at a loss for books that are confirmed to become movies. Most that I've found say they're in pre-production.

The movie for that book is still in development. They hired a director last summer but I haven't seen any news on it since. It's possible it could release next year, but I wouldn't bet on it. I did see a The Nightingale movie listed on IMDB for 2017 but it's set in Tasmania, not France.

Thank you! I appreciate all your input on this. I like movies, but I don't have time to see very many, and I have a problem apparently, because any movies being made from books for next year are either (a) based on books I've already read, or (b) based on books that I have zero interest in. I'm really hoping for that grey area, "book I haven't read yet that I think I could kinda sorta enjoy." For this year, I ended up reading Miss Peregrine, and I really did not like that book. I wish they hadn't repeated this category. This is my list, and I'm not excited about any of them: Red Sparrow, The City of Shifting Waters, Three to Kill, Live by Night, All the Bright Places, Murder on the Orient Express Are any of these iffy for 2017? Mostly I'm banking on Three to Kill. I guess Poirot is like my "safety school" here.

ETA: I guess I might like Ghost in the Shell, actually. I had missed that one.

Live by Night is an absolute yes. It's in the mix for awards season this year.

The City of Shifting Waters has a Trailer and a fairly early release date, so it's likely.

Red Sparrow has a director and two stars signed on, so it's possible but could easily wait a year or so. (It's had a director and one star for a year and a half.)

I haven't seen anything about Three to Kill since talk from three years ago, and the people it talked about do not have it listed anywhere I can find. This one is stuck in development hell.

All the Bright Places probably not before 2018.

Orient Express is probable for 2017, but a year is a long time.

You can also watch a trailer for the movie, for which I will be shocked if Viola doesn't win at least one award.

I don't know if comic books/graphic novels are counting here, but Logan, Thor: Ragnarock, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Wonder Wonan and The Justice League are all coming out this year.

Also, My Cousin Rachel by Daphne DuMaurier, It by Stephen King, The Dinner by Herman Koch, and Beauty and the Beast are getting adaptations this year.

I think graphic novels count, but the trick is figuring out which set of comic books the movie is based on. Sometimes there isn't any one set of comic books you can read, because often they take the characters and backstory from the comic and write a new story for a movie. Same issue with Sherlock Holmes or James Bond (not that either of those have movies coming out this year, that I know of). And since the category is "a book that's becoming a movie", I'm not sure if it counts to read a book that's developed from the movie. What do you think?
