Replacement for Summer Reading

Looking for a replacement for this book for our school's summer reading list. The idea is that the books tie into the history class for the fall. But few kids will read this classic so I'd like something they might that is about early American history.

"Mohicans" is a favorite of mine from my youth.

As I recall, I was also greatly moved around the same time by Conrad Richter's "The Light In The Forest".

Worth considering, imho.
