I wish it were different, I really do but times are 'ard 'ere in La La land. I think the review is the important thing. Readers don't notice whether the reviewer purchased the book or not, do they? I just read that the 18+ discussion was over! Sorry I brought it up again. I read these posts from bottom to top!

ROBIN, the story is fiction and the start of chapter 2 clearly states that it is set on a fictitious island of Santorino in 2 locations there, Cape Cod and San Bernardino. Its not in the USA....how could you miss that? Please check the start of chapter 2 and make that correction... the location is a fact not an opinion.....it may not change your rating but at least your review would have the correction location. If you do the research pyjamas can also be pajamas.....

Emma with due respect to you as Moderator/Administrator.....I am not querying his opinion.....he says the book is set in the USA and I simply telling him the book states at chapter 2 where it is located....thats not an opinion its written at the start of chapter 2....thats fact not opinion

Reviews amended. I stand corrected. Just shows that chapter headings are never read!

Thx Robin for making correction to the location error as that was my issue... appreciated.

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments This is in no way directed at any particular member, but a hard line on the 'do not contact your reviewer in order to change a review' rule protects all our 2,600 members, and the reputation of the group. I will continue to uphold it robustly.
We have an ethos of being a safe place to give honest opinions, harsh or not. It increases the validity of reviews compared to other review exchange programs which only allow favourable reviews.
And yep, I've gritted my teeth over receiving low star reviews and worried about giving them too.

Some small things I didn't put in the review:

- I would usually use a comma after leading adverbs/interjections (Brett doesn't—or at least not always). e.g: Finally, they reached the top / Well, here we are.
- I would only use italics for internal dialogue. Brett uses italics and quotation marks, and I kept thinking it was voiced dialogue.
- on p144, I think 'and dusting' should be 'and dusted' or just 'dusting'.

Brett Stadelmann (brettstadelmann) | 28 comments Thanks Roger. A truly excellent review; you've put a smile on my face.
Interesting pick-up regarding commas and introductory elements. I've do some research, and soul searching, and may tweak my modus operandi in the sequel.
Funny thing about using italics and quotes for inner dialogue. I made that decision a long time ago and have been working on the book in that form ever since. I'm so used to it now that I find it slightly annoying to read books that use only italics or only quotes (as in %99 of them). Fortunately, it's still readable.
Also, I've had a look at pg144, and, though I'm extremely grateful for the suggestion, I've decided to leave that sentence as is. Feel free to msg me; I'd be happy to chat more.

Your review was excellent. You picked up on both the overt and subtle religious themes in exactly the way I'd hoped.

Roger Keays (rogerkeays) | 16 comments Here is my review of Darling Dark, by Natalie Bennett. Since it is a negative review, I'll only post it to Amazon at the author's request.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 182: by Emma (new)

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments Thanks Roger, but it should be your decision whether to post or not, not the author's.
It is the group's ethos that all reviews are posted. It only changed from being a rule due to amazon's new review policy.
It remains a fact that low star reviews validate this groups as a genuine, honest review group, not one which is designed purely for authors to scratch each others backs.
Remember, reviews are for READERS not authors. This is why we have non-reciprocal reviews, so that authors can give their honest opinions to the public.
Many people have enjoyed Natalie's book, and didn't mind the errors you perceived, but a negative review at least shows it was read by a real person, in a way, it almost validates the high star reviews.

message 183: by Roger (new)

Roger Keays (rogerkeays) | 16 comments Amazon won't accept my review for Darling Dark, so I guess that solves that problem. Their email is this:

- Your review should focus on specific features of the product and your experience with it. Feedback on the seller or your shipment experience should be provided at www.amazon.com/feedback.
- We do not allow profane or obscene content. This applies to adult products too.
- Advertisements, promotional material or repeated posts that make the same point excessively are considered spam.
- Please do not include URLs external to Amazon or personally identifiable content in your review.

I tried censoring the profanity, but no potato.

message 184: by Emma (new)

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments Ok, thanks for trying. Amazon are sticklers for profanity.

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments Admin mod message.
Note: This message is being posted in every active group.

it is not acceptable to contact reviewers after a review had been posted, except to say ‘thank you’. Asking a review to change a review is strictly prohibited. It is also not acceptable to contact a reviewee before you post your review.
This group is about getting honest reviews, and that includes the good, the bad and very occasionally, the ugly. Simply put, if you don’t want honest reviews, this isn’t the place for you.

Brett Stadelmann (brettstadelmann) | 28 comments And thanks Tim. I thoroughly enjoyed it :)

message 192: by Brett (new)

Brett Stadelmann (brettstadelmann) | 28 comments To Robin,
I've begun reading "Deliver Her", and have read a couple of reviews to get some idea of what I was in for. A few readers commented on the abundance of nautical terminology, and you mentioned possibly reducing it, so I've been bearing this in mind.
I just wanted to say this now as it occurs to me and before I forget. A simple technique you could try is to briefly define vague terms in a subordinate clause the first time you use them.

So just as a very, very rough example, the first time you use the word "saloon" is as follows:
"with just a raised coach roof section over the saloon area."
One possibility could be something like:
"with just a raised coach roof section over the saloon, the area below deck."

I just used saloon as an example. I'm sure many people know what a saloon, or salon, is when it relates to boating, and your context makes it pretty obvious, but I had to google it to be sure.
I don't feel that the nautical terminology is in need of reduction, but that's just my opinion.

Great work, btw.
