Hi Roger, thank you for the honest review and your tips to improve my writing. For me, that is a huge benefit with joining this group. I am here to share my work with others as well as read theirs, so that we can all help each other become better writers. I would be fine with you posting your review to Amazon.com and .uk, since I want readers to be aware of what to expect when they pick up my book.

Again, thank you for the time you put into reading my story, and the honest review.

Okay the stars are different on Amazon and GR, and I liked the book overall, so 3 stars on GR and 4 on the two amazons. I went back to the Amazon reviews and updated the ratings.

Thank you for the review Barry. I am not sure what the deal with amazon is, I was aware of the formatting issues and have made changes to the story that were uploaded with a cover change on Nov. 29th. According to amazon everything should be resolved with my files by December 7th by their tech team. I have contacted them twice through email about this issue as the cover is showing up as the old one and new one, and the interior file never changed.

(when you said second book in January 2017 that let me know it hasn't been updated, that is no longer the release date)

I supposed I should contact them again and see what the issue is or if I need to just resubmit the entire book.

What I noticed is sometimes the section would end at the middle of the page, or in the middle of a sentence. The story was interesting, but the formatting definitely messed with the pace and the flow of the story for me. Also, after I first did the reviews I noticed Amazon's ranking is different, which is why they got an extra star when I went back in and updated them. I enjoyed the story, hopefully Amazon fixes the file it is using, and I did get the release date for the second one from the end of this book. I know when I made changes to mine I just uploaded the interior file again, to avoid any problems. Hopefully they get it fixed for you and thank you for letting me take a look!

Garfield Whyte (garfieldwhyte) TS I saw your review. Thx but this isnt a clean group, remember.
I have no issue with the 3 stars but this group is an 18+ group ... " infidelity, is very unpalatable for lots of readers"???

My question to the group is when we review a book are we to review it on the basis of a comparison with another book, especially if the other book is not by the author being reviewed? Because in doing so we are promoting the other book and playing down mine by saying Summer of 42 is better. Just want to know for future reference, if we are allowed to make such comparison. PLEASE note I have no intention to be offensive, just need to know for the future. Please and thx.

Garfield, the group is not the review police, people can review in whatever way they wish, unless the review mentions the author rather than the book, and then goodreads or amazon 'may' get involved, but I doubt it.
Reviews are subjective, personal opinions, but I agree with T.S. that infidelity is probably unpalatable for many people.
The mention of it in a review might well help steer people away from the book who hate reading about it, and encourage those who are interested in it as a theme.

Thx Emma but my point is, i didnt enter the book in a clean round. It was put here as this group in my view knows that there is a possibility that those adult stuff would be in a novel. I entered an adult 18+ group and is castigated for things like infidelity, cheating, child born out of wedlock etc. So the point about steering people away from the book, seems odd as if the group is about adult stuff, then why? As that's what it really is about. If i entered the clean group or a kids group with this book, then I would have nothing to say, I entered the 18+ . Why specify groups, Clean or 18+ and then when i enter the book for the 18+ adult group I am seemingly bashed for the book for the very thing that the group is designated.

This is not subjective as a book ought to be reviewed based on the group it belongs to. Am I missing something here?

Then to say that it was read because there was an obligation to read it.....really? That's speaking volumes... we are all in a group to read the book assigned whether we like the genre or not, but we made a commitment to read anyway, so why state you didnt want to read it but you stuck with it? Which group is appropriate for infidelity, child born out of wedlock etc? Please let me so I can withdraw it from this group and put it in the appropriate group, this way I wont be told that anyone is forced to read a genre they didnt like?

message 135: by Emma (new)

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments People signing up to an 18+ group agree that they are happy to read graphically described sexual and violent scenes. That's all.

T.S. is entitled to his opinion, and the group will uphold that right.
We don't guarantee favourable reviews here, only honest ones.
Please treat your reviewers here like any other review you'd get on goodreads or amazon.
'Thank you for your time' is the only appropriate response to a reviewer on this thread, even if you type it through gritted teeth.

If you wish to start up a thread to discuss the general concept in more detail, please go ahead. I'm sure the debate will be fascinating.

Honest review yes, I know that but in the context of what the group is designated...if its otherwise then there will be no sense in designating group, clean, 18+ etc, then it would be anything goes. Giving the group a name is a joke.

I have great empathy for your position. Just because someone is fine with 18+ literature, doesn't mean they like everything that could be in that category.

If its a case of simply liking or disliking, I would have simply stated that I dislike paranormal genre... but i made a commitment to review it based on the basis that I would not necessarily get all genres i loved/liked. So maybe we should not label the group and gamble, as anything goes or name then all "Bible Stories".

message 139: by Garfield (last edited Dec 06, 2016 09:55PM) (new)

Garfield Whyte (garfieldwhyte) Here is my review for "The City of God" for B. Stadelmann. I saw on Amazon where you said you are a novice....I don't think so at all. Good stuff!

I have now fulfilled by obligation for the 4 reviews, two were not my genre of choice and I would not have selected them from a book store but I had to review them in light of the group stipulating that there would be paranormal stuff and erotica, whether we liked it or not. Bearing in mind the saying that “the same knife that stick goat stick sheep”. So, I reviewed in light of the group being 18+ and not a bible story review group. If anyone is dropping out of this group, let me know as December into early January is usually a slow time for me, I could pick up where you dropped out.

For the 4 persons I reviewed, keep writing… you are all “going places.” Good stuff... very good stuff!

Cheers!

Emma Jaye | 3693 comments Thanks for the offer, but you couldn't pick up another person's allocated books in this round as it would probably mean reciprocal reviews.
if you want to jump in on the one for one thread to keep yourself busy till I set up some more groups, you would be very welcome.

maybe joining a 'general' round will suit you better although I have to say that back when we only had general rounds, a book such as yours would probably have gotten one stars because it contained infidelity.

I have to say, you are the first person in the 17 18+ groups we have run that hasn't seen them as as advantage. But you are very welcome to your opinion.
As is T.S.

I never asked for a 5 star in fact I did say that I have no issue with 3 stars, I never asked you to change your opinion, so dont suggest I did nor have I debated the review, I simple said that the book was entered in an 18+ group not a clean round nor a bible story group.... I wanted to make that clear so dont convolute the issue... with due respect I am reminding you about the type of group it is, is not a debate...its a fact.

Brett Stadelmann (brettstadelmann) | 28 comments On a lighter note, I have decided on a definition of the term Brettexiteer (it's named after me, so I figured I get to define it):

A British citizen, or permanent resident of the UK, who decides to emigrate, based directly and/or primarily on the outcome of the Brexit referendum.
(much the same way some Americans are leaving the US after the election of Trump)

I'd love to know if anyone manages to use it in casual conversation. (e.g. Brettexiteers are welcomed in Australia with open arms.) Thanks for the word, Roger :)
