Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts 1 & 2
question
What is wrong and what is good about this book?
It is JK. Rowlings own personal Harry Potter fanfiction. There wasn't much thought into the plot and quite simply, the only reason I read this book was because it was in the Harry Potter franchise. It was poorly written and I never made any connection with the characters because of the Script form. For a 'Harry Potter' spinoff i wanted more detail. This was quite simply horrible to read personally. It really but a downer on the Harry Potter franchise.
Scorpius and Draco, surprisingly, are good.
The rest...not so much. But my full thoughts are in my review....

I agree with Julia above. The Malfoys carried the play in a way, and it wouldn't have been as good without them.
As for what is wrong, well, there are a certain number of plot holes which have been mentioned in other threads, but I suppose trying to explain them might be part of the fun.

The story itself had potential. But the thing I didn't like was that I felt like I was reading a fan fiction. The way the characters were written just didn't seem right. I get that it's just a screenplay and that it wasn't going to feel like the novels, but the dialog was all wrong. I honestly don't think that JKR wrote too much of this. JKR has a certain style to her writing, and I felt like this wasn't her.
There were so many new characters and so many explanations that were needed and this screenplay did not help but give me confusion. There were literally so many things that had to be covered that could not be simply done in a screenplay. This is the next generation that we are talking about. there are descriptons that are needed and personalities changing. the plot was good but the layout was just so bad that i give it 2 stars.
This book was THE WORST. It literally based its entire plot around breaking established rules in the universe. The characters were flat and colorless, "Delphi" doesn't make any sense in context.
In book 3, it's very clear: time turners do not create parallel universes. You cannot change the past beyond what you already have done. It works. It's an important point, because time travel is one of those superpowers that raises a lot of questions and makes convincing conflict difficult. Not only did Thorne decide to break that rule and add a few new ones, he decided to base the entire plot on it. It doesn't make any sense.
Then of course, it also does horrible things to perfectly fine characters- Hermione without Ron becomes a wretched shrew (as if she wouldn't have functioned on her own, that's feminism for you.) Ron becomes a bumbling joke, literally the end of every punchline. Cedric, rather than being someone who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, becomes a closeted Nazi (really? are we REALLY supposed to believe that?)
Did I mention the "Mary Sue" moment with Snape? There was no reason for that scene to exist, the story was fine, it was DONE.

What's wrong is that this book felt like a published fanfiction to me. It was an unnecessary addition to the Wizarding World and I felt like J.K. Rowling was either taking a shot at writing screenplay or trying to make more money, which honestly seems uncharacteristic of her, so I tend to lean towards the first possibility. The characters were poorly developed and, frankly, I hated Albus.
Everything that's good about this book can be summed up in one word: Scorpius.

I completely agree with this opinion, I don't like how she added some fanfiction into the story. I would've liked to see more of the Golden Trio(Ron,

it isn't good, but it's not THAT bad. it looks a lot like a fanfic and there are some parts of the story that don't make much sense, but, as Lauren said, the story had potential. overall, i think it's an ok book.
Almost everything is wrong with this book. The worst thing was Delphi, obviously. And no character seems to have developed at all since the last books, in contrary Draco has gone back to pointlessly disliking Harry. And so many (small) mistakes.
with huge respect for rowling, i'd say that she wanted the fame and money again, and she didn't want her name to be forgotten et cetera. Suzevelyn above is completely right, it was just like reading a fanfiction and it was easy to guess what was really happening like wtf about Bellatrix's daugther with Voldy, she's married to another death eater while she was obsessed with the Dark Lord?
I really loved this book. We can't really expect it to be as good as Harry Potter - That would set your expectations to high, then BAM! You read the book and you're super disappointed. But, if you look at the book itself, its pretty amazing. Albus may seem a bit unlikeable, but think about it. He's a teenage boy struggling to find his place it the world. Wouldn't you be a bit obnoxious yourself if you were in his situation? He has to much on his plate to be expected to be a happy little angel child.
