Andrea--I've moved your thread down to Unsolved for you--you will get more "traffic" down there.
What reading level was this -- elementary, middle grade, adult? When you say "repeatedly meets the same girl" do you mean that they're friends and keep in touch, or that this is some mystry girl that just keeps turning up? Do you recall how old the boy was? From whom did he learn the magic -- family, or someone else? When the camp is destroyed, was his family killed as well?
This sounds EXACTLY like one of my most favorite books. His name is Kvothe . Everything that you just described happens in this book. The Name of the Wind
I'm pretty sure Stacy is right, though I haven't yet read The Name of the Wind, I have looked into it and plan to read soon. However, just in case, there is metal magic in the Mistborn Books as well https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... So you should take a look at both ^^

That is clearly a very memorable book, since it's been asked for FIVE times before your search Andrea.
Congrats on finding it, and I've added your thread to the shelf and moved this down to Solved for you.
