Faith (faithjader) | 3 comments I read this around middle school (2002-2005), probably a required reading. I remember very random details, such as the main character is a young girl with naturally curly hair. At one point, her mother forces her to get a perm ("permanent" back then) and she was upset because she liked her naturally curly hair. She hides the identity of a young man (if I remember correctly, it's because he's Jewish and it's WWII). I think she lets him live in her tree house. She gives him a blue shirt with pearl buttons that she originally proudly gifted her father, but he didn't appreciate it. Later, the shirt is presented to her with blood on it, and at first she maintains ignorance but then freaks out on the person and calls them a murderer. This is all I remember, but I want to find this book!

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments I think the book you're looking for is Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene. It's often required reading in schools (that's where I read it) and it has the hair scenes and shirt scenes that you mention. Great read.
