I did a thread on here a few days ago, but I am still finding my way round and was not quite sure what to do. When I looked at it again I thought it not a good beginning so I deleted it and will start again here.

So. My name is John Little and I like to write.
It's hard to put a genre name to what I have done because I seem to be rather like a magpie who ends up writing about what catches his eye.

Thus far I have written a History book which is quite academic, a small autobiography, and a slim volume of ghost stories, all of which may be seen here.

At the moment I have a 'road' novel in the final stages of proofing and I aim to publish that in the very near future, hopefully by the first week of December.

In addition to this I have written the first ten chapters of an historical novel which is set between 1894 and 1919. That will not be ready until well into next year for it involves a great deal of research, and I will have to visit its locations to ensure accuracy in my geographical descriptions.

I have a dislike of anachronisms so my obsession has become to check detail to the exact year if I can. My latest example was in tracking down how the Victorians ate ice cream at the seaside, which was quite disturbing to think about.
What occupies me right now is a machine that I saw on a website which was described as a 'baler' but I do not think it is. To me it looks more like the machine that was used to cut hay.

That is going to take me a while to sort I think.

One project which I have not published is a one act version of Ingmar Bergman's 'Seventh Seal'. I wanted to stage it but could not get enough actors to do it.
The Bergman estate however were very happy with it and quite happy to give a license to perform. Maybe one day I shall try again.

That is enough for now I think. If there are any people on here who are ex coal miners, or who know a lot about the period 1894-1919 then I'd be glad to hear from you on here.

I may have a few questions for you....

:)

Thank you Patti. I have a few posts elsewhere and shall continue to do as you suggest.
It's odd though. I have two computers in front of me.

On this one I am writing to you.

On the other I am approaching Silloth from the south in November 1894.

Keeps you busy this malarkey!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm always left in wonder how you authory lot can live in so many worlds at once.

I suppose we readers do as well, though.

That is the essence of this business is it not?

To conjure other worlds to exist in. To share them with others.

We tap into endless possibilities. :)

I need to have one world I can control. Though it has its own internal logic and won't let me deviate from that.

Ah but you control the others by choosing what you read.

Those are worlds you can take or leave, pick up or set down as you please.

Thus their existence depends solely on whether you bring them to life, or not.

Such power!

Some more than others I think.

Certainly exercising total control over the world we create is a sort of power.

I had a dream once that I had been made the Bishop of the Isle of Man. I have no idea why, for I am not the least bit religious,

It was full of incident and detail of how I arrived by ferry and got an electric train to where I was to live. It went on a very long time, but eventually the time came for my installation in the cathedral (is there one?) The place was full of the great and the good and I was in ecclesiastical robes about to be installed. There were uniforms and suits and dignitaries and the organ played, and I decided that I no longer wished to be bishop.

I turned to them and said 'Actually I don't want this job. You are all just figments of my imagination and I'm leaving.'

So saying I floated above their heads towards some slit windows in the roof. As I did so there was utter panic.
'Stop him! The world will end. We'll all die if he gets away.'

They ran at me clutching to catch my feet, their mouths agape and women screaming in horror.

I escaped them and floated up through the slits which turned out to be my own eyes which I opened, went through, and woke up.

I have destroyed an entire world.

Undoubtedly I am a megalomaniac....

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Forget dope. I want to share a cheese and mushroom pizza with you.

Pleasure. ;)

I am finding it very hard to believe that Victorians would have had candles on Christmas trees.

One stray flame and you've got a fire! Maybe outside but inside?

Risky.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just liked your author page, matey. I think writing in a single genre is over-rated! It's too restricting.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I think so too!

I'm not quite sure how to describe the book I am going to publish before Xmas. I suppose it's a novel for want of a better description.

However the one I am working on is definitely a historical novel.

Variety is the spice of life. :)
