SOLVED. Short Story: Lighthouse, Keeper and his apprentice and a sea monster. [s]

Trying to find a short story I read in English class in fourth grade, so probably about 1988 or so. At least around there.

It was in a textbook and the story was about a lighthouse keeper that had recently taken on an apprentice and on foggy nights when they blow the lighthouse horn a sea monster (kind of like Nessie) will come up and bellow back at it, thinking it might be a mate. It was kind of short and kind of sad. I've been trying to find it ever since.

Any help would be appreciated. :)
