Lovely way to express it, Mary and Sheila! I find one really positive thing about being online these days. How many of you have a close friend, family member, or co-worker who shares your love of JAFF? No, me neither! But, because millions of people can see what is happening online, we have a way to connect with the people who share our interest. And, through this shared interest we find the other things we have in common, and have people we can reach out to. Pretty cool thing... I am very grateful to have you all to connect with online,

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 700 comments My family at least knows the name of my favorite author....can't get them to like the books or even the movies. I kid about who I am going to leave all my JAFF books to!!!!

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 623 comments Sheila, that is a very real concern. I know I have mentioned this before, but after mom passed, Dad got rid of over nine thousand books in her personal library. Sold them to a man who was starting up a used book store. Lawd, I don't even know what was in that library. I didn't have a place for them and couldn't deal with it and everything else...so we just let them go. She was a rabid reader from way back. Whew!

I'm sitting here with my jaw on the ground. Nine thousand books in a personal library!!!!!!!!!!!

message 56: by Mary (new)

Mary | 452 comments Teresa,I can't imagine having all those books either. Wow!
But I guess if you were a very young book addict and had no choice but to buy paperbacks, then I guess it would be easy to accumulate such a number over a lifetime.
It's still pretty amazing,though!

message 57: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 277 comments Wouldn't I just love to have a library like that. When we moved house ten years ago my brother was helping with the move. After he had manhandled the tenth box of books into the van he said, 'there should be a law about how many books someone is allowed to own'. :):) And he still wasn't finished at that!

message 58: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 700 comments I don't have that much storage room and used to trade my paperbacks in for credit at the Used Paperback Book Store...but it closed about a year ago. I had over $200 credit there. I don't buy much other than kindle books now.

message 59: by Mary (new)

Mary | 452 comments Teresa-ten boxes of books and counting? Totally understandable!!

Sheila-$200 credit? Wow,I'm guessing you traded in quite a lot of books!

message 60: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 277 comments You should see my daughter's bedroom Sheila!! There are books EVERYWHERE. Her dad built shelves for her which filled up so fast they were no addition. There's books on the floor, on her window sill even in her ensuite. She never parts with any of them.

message 61: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 700 comments I will just have to take your word for it and think, "The girl could have much worse habits!"

message 62: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 277 comments Ha Ha Sheila!! That's very true.

message 63: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I had to downsize my books about five years ago when I moved to a smaller house. Crushing! (And, incidentally, quite hard to give books away these days.) When I had moved to the previous house, I had moved 134 boxes of books. I don’t know how many that is--probably a lot less than nine thousand, though.

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 700 comments Here the AAUW in Allentown has a used book sale in the fall and the AAUW in Bethlehem has one in the spring to raise money for scholarships for girls so they accept books, CDs and DVDs. American Assoc. of University Women

Plus the Salvation Army's store accepts books, etc. And near us is a "free library" which is a large book bin with a glass door and shelves and you can put in or take out books at will, for free. It is near a very popular walking trail. It can hold maybe a dozen books, depending on size.

Our used book story closed also and I had quite a credit built up. I knew of two teachers that I worked with that shopped at the store. They allowed my credit to be split into parts and I gave it to each of them. One had young children and they had a ball shopping for books. I have really grieved the loss of that store. The nearest used book store is a 70 miles round trip. So my Kindle app has really come in handy.

Our library has a "Friends of the Library" where you can donate books, CDs, DVDs and they will have a day where they sell the items. It raises funds for our local library. We also have the Salvation Army drop off center too. So, at least there are places that receive books.

message 68: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 277 comments We have nothing at all like that where I live. That's why I'm always looking for cheap kindle books and Amazon vouchers for my birthday and Christmas which are close together.

message 69: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 623 comments Teresa, that is a shame. Sometimes though, people hold on to their favorite books and, if it is one I am also looking for, it can be difficult to find. My mother and I used to go to the used book store [on our day out] and she always carried a little notebook with her with a list of what she wanted.

My family knows a gift for me is easy. Like you, I want Amazon gift cards for birthday or Christmas. Right color, size and never goes out of style.

Our store would NOT allow credit to be shared!

Teresa | 277 comments Spot on with the gift cards J W. Can't wait for next month. Two lots to get. I'll have a wonderful time shopping.
My daughter and I are just planning here on a trip to Dublin in the New Year. There's a book shop there that has new and a whole floor of used books. Heaven!!!

message 78: by Barb (new)

Barb (barblibrarian1) Just at the point of my life where my library was starting to get too large two things stopped me adding to it: becoming a librarian and having books enough around me, and getting a kindle and finding out how lovely it is to have a library in my hand. Now, I am just a virtual book hoarder instead of an actual one.

BTW - another reminder - if you have a Kindle, we can share purchased books. If you look at my book shelves, I have one called "books I own", and most of them are JAFF, and about 90% are Kindle. I would be very happy to lend them to anyone in this group. Dung has just borrowed one. I would need to have your email address that you use with your Amazon account.

message 79: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 700 comments I have books I can lend out also. I don't have a separate list but feel free to message me and I can get back to you as to whether it is available to lend out. (Some I borrowed from the Kindle Unlimited library and some are paperbacks I own so those can't be lent out.)

message 80: by Mary (new)

Mary | 452 comments Ladies,would appreciate enlightenment!!
Can you lend books if you've only got the kindle app on your phone?

message 81: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 700 comments When one goes on Amazon and sees that one can lend out the book the person to whom it is to be lent has a e-mail address and/or a "kindle" address which are supplied to Amazon and they contact the person. That person in accepting must have an account with Amazon and Amazon would "know" their kindle address. (I have addressed for kindle on my phone, on my kindle and on my PC.) If you purchase a book it can go to all three. If you have only the one address, I am imagining that Amazon has that one address.

message 82: by Mary (new)

Mary | 452 comments Thank you,Sheila.

message 83: by Anji (new)

Anji | 283 comments Sadly, lending Kindle books hasn't reached the UK yet and from what I gather, it doesn't cross international borders either. Sheila has tried lending to me in the past, I know, and it just wouldn't work.

message 84: by Mary (new)

Mary | 452 comments Ah! You can't lend in the UK,so probably not in the Emerald Isle either. Thanks for letting me know that!

message 85: by Barb (new)

Barb (barblibrarian1) That is so strange! There must be some differences in copyright laws in the UK because it certainly can't be a technical problem. I would check to see if lending is possible in Ireland since the laws may be different.

I think you're right about the copyright laws Barb, but I've no idea what the differences are/may be. We can't even lend books within the UK, which is a shame, as I'd be more than willing to lend any of my library to my friends over here.

Perhaps it's something that Amazon will make happen eventually. You guys got Kindle Unlimited well over a year before we did, not that I use it as I like to keep my books once I've paid for them.

Howdy All!

Here is the result of the drawing. Remember, the person listed on the left picks for the name listed to the right. Pick from the person's list hidden (I mean listed, LOL) in the above comments. Please make your picks by Nov 24th so we have that extra week to start reading. Make a new comment with the person's name and the book you picked for them. Oh, and don't forget to check for a comment with the book choice someone else made for you.

Here is my choice for you. It has received very good reviews and from what I've read meticulously researched and accurately reflecting the Regency period. I hope I was "gentle".....:)

Hello Rosa, so nice to meet you and thank you for choosing my next reading selection for me. I look forward to reading it. I hope we get to chat more...however, I have a book to hunt up in that TBR pile of mine. I know it is in there somewhere. If you don't hear back from me in a few days, send in the dogs.
