Want to meet in The Parlor for a read & discuss of the new Poirot releasing in Sept. 2014? It'll be like old times in a new era. Want to? All look-sees are welcomed on board. The more the merrier.

I am perfectly willing to give it a try, if other join along. Probably will be a pricey book, though, and in demand at the libraries as well...

Starfish | 13 comments MC, if you refer to the new episodes on "Masterpiece" , airing July 27 to August 13, I would love to discuss.
BTW, I thought you all had abandoned ship. Not really a hotbed of activity, but then, what is.
The best days may be behind us.

message 4: by J (new)

J I'm in if it's the new Masterpiece episodes!

Hey, all! So good to see you back! After AE shutdown, well, here we are with new & familiar company to enjoy!
Star, the new July-Aug. Masterpiece lineup sounds good as well as the new Poirot book to release in Sept.
Yes, let's discuss all. lol
How should we work this? Everyone take one title and host or just post threads & add to them? Which would be easiest?
Meantime, we have May end-June. Discuss a book? Movie?
Also, if you still keep in touch with any of the oldie but goodie clan, invite them over.

Pghfan, will the download/e-copy be easier to obtain?

Purr-fect, J! Will do. BTW, how are you doing? Anyone hear from JH1? I heard from her about 2 weeks ago. Not lately though. Hope she's much improved!

Starfish | 13 comments MC, I can commit only to the Masterpiece video adaptations.
Reading Pghfan's post, he too seems concerned that a new book publication would be hard to get and probably costly.

The advantage to discussing a TV show is that there is no need for a leader, nor structure of any kind, no spoiler alert, waiting for all to catch up, etc. We simply watch the episode Sunday night and blather on about what moves us until the next episode comes up.

As for the other micro group, there is some interest in Suchet, but the main interest is in current UK TV shows of which I know very little, if anything. We usually have some comment after D/A, Sherlock and Mr. Selfridge. Unfortunately these dramas have such a long hiatus, at best it amounts to three months of discussion and nine months of silence.

Purr-fect, Starfish! Film for those so inclined, books for the biblios. Both for anyone leaning that way. Just like the old place. Good deal.

J, I did but haven't heard back yet. Are you reading anything? Have any suggestions for a June tome. Early or mid is fine with me.

Alastair Palmer Has anyone seen the PBS special on the life of Agatha Christie, with David Suchet? I watched it last evening - so interesting and informative! I have to admit I knew little about her personal life until then. Glad I recorded it and can't wait to see it again. Suchet is an excellent host, as always!

message 14: by J (new)

J I recorded it also but only watched part of it so far. Very enjoyable!

Hey, Sir Alastair is in the house along with J-Snoops. Good to see you again. I recorded and watched it as well. Will keep this one on file as long as my U-Verse doesn't go out with another storm. I also had the one previous which followed DS around as he prepared in make up and costume to discuss his years as Poirot. That was another good one. That one I lost in one of our nasty electrical storms.

Stop by The Parlor and visit more often, please. As you can see, we've a few new PI's and a few that harken back to A&E days. We are a die hard loyal group to hang together so. ;-)

James | 9 comments Hopefully, I will be able to watch the PBS special on AC's life this coming weekend. My mother-in-law recorded it for me to watch. My wife and I are planning to head down there if things work out. I am really excited about seeing that program. PS: Good to 'see' Alastair again. See you around, Inspector Hobbs.

message 17: by Alastair (new)

Alastair Palmer Thanks for your replies. Yes, good to see you all again, too! Suchet is such a gem! His special on the Orient Express rail journey was excellent too.

Watched both the Orient Express special (on some months ago) and this more recent special on Christie's life. I knew most of it, but if you are especially intrigued, there are a number of biographies and also a book by Curran (interviewed in the special) where he discussed the content of all the little notebooks that Christie kept, to keep track of her "leetle" ideas.

Yes, I was especially surprised that she kept notebooks everywhere to write down ideas wherever she may be, but somehow kept it all organized. Genius at work!

Several great Suchet specials over the years. I loved the one with behind scenes of the making of Orient Express. The liner set was interesting and when DS got to run the new Orient Express. Though the computerized controls did a bit to smash the romanticism of the old liner and an era gone by. Anyone long for the elegance, manners of the good old days?

Yes, when people actually dressed up to travel! It showed manners and respect! Nowadays, you see some people even wearing PJs..

I understand that they revived the Orient Express in some fashion, and that it runs part of the same route. I hear it is very expensive, but sounds like a trip of a lifetime!

So true, Al. Seems manners are confused with stuffiness yet the elegance of a well-dressed, good mannered person is quite fashionable! Beautiful!

On my Bucket List, Pghfan. Not sure I'll get to it though.

message 24: by Alastair (new)

Alastair Palmer Yes, it was on our to do list, JH2 included, when we win the lottery! The trip of a lifetime!!

Sad to learn that overnight sleeper service on most of Europe's inter-city trains have been cut back, even eliminated due to poor demand. You can blame the rise of budget airlines and speedier day trains. The romance of the night train will soon be the thing of the past! :(

On my bucket list too Tina! I think it would be so fun to dress in period style and stay on the OE...maybe reading the book as you go along...
I agree with you all - manners have long gone away...

Not to fear, we'll have more cozy discussions in The Parlor. I believe J-Snoops may put forth an autumn or Halloween themed mystery offering. We'll get to vote on it and will all have a say in choosing the title.
