Don't leave it till the last minute if you are intending to nominate a book.

GR stopped auto-populating a couple of fields in 2015 because they were so often incorrect.

Turns out they were essential for nominating awards. :/

Complete shambles & so many NZ books ineligible. I'm a librarian on GR but don't think I'll help in 2017.

Are the NZ books ineligible because their original publication date falls outside the Nov 2015-2016 period? Or what other reason would there be?

They have to be published in the States. For example A History of New Zealand Women only published in NZ, no kindle or ebook edition.

They are allowing books published overseas earlier but not published in the States till Nov 15 (I think) 2015 to be nominated. But a librarian has to temporarily change the original date of publication.

If you want to nominate something Lesley the fields that need to be filled in are original title & original date of publication.

Oh, I see. US centric again. Ah well, even if NZ published books were in there they wouldn't vote well I suspect. Thanks for clarifying, Carol.

Vicky | 39 comments So does that mean
a) if our books are on CreateSpace, does that qualify as being published in the US?
and b) can we nominate our own books?

You can certainly nominate your own book, but do you have thousands of followers to mobilise to add your title as a write in vote? Unless you have a massive following, you are wasting your time. The indie books that make it through are bestsellers with tens of thousands of avid fans voting for them. From my observations these awards are dominated by trad published/US centric books.

That's exactly what I was going to say to Vicky, A.W. I must also say I don't know half the books that are nominated this year - not just haven't read, but not aware of!

Mellie (mellie42) | 26 comments My understanding of how it works, is that GR selects books in each category with the most ratings (or is it TBRs?) over the year. Yes, you can submit a write-in vote for an indie title. But realistically, unless you book garnered several thousand ratings this year, your book doesn't have a hope.

I would think it's most ratings on books with an average of over 3.5. The only book I have read from the nominations is Eligible: A Modern Retelling of Pride and Prejudice Which is also the worst book I finished all year. It's rating has slid to 3.67 once the advance hype died out.

I'll be interested if any of the books we had to add get through. A couple of the cookbooks might.

I'm one of the Goodreads users badly affected by the design changes & edit mode is worse. Thats why on the thread I asked members to link to the book to make it as quick as possible.

I would think the only Kiwi who would have a show of getting a nomination would be Nalini Singh.

@ Vicki I would assume ebooks/create space would be fine.

Thanks for the information. It is as I suspected, but I sought to clarify the situation. I would hate to miss an opportunity that might come off, but my less than massive following would not get me close to the right numbers.

Sorry to be negative Vicky. & I had a quick look at some of the less popular genres & some of the poetry nominations have very few likes & reviews. So maybe some of those will have a shot.
