Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments Hi Johanna,
Thanks for the recommendation!
I've picked up another book yesterday in a secondhand bookstore!
Anne Boleyn by P. Friedmann. (Sorry I can't link as I'm typing on the phone app).
It's a bargain! Hardcover and doesn't even look read at all! Not sure what it's like but I'll give it a whirl!
I've added Ives to my list!

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments Also, yes I love English history in general, I'm fortunate enough to live in England, in my region in particular we have many old heritage houses and castles (Northumberland - about an hour and a half from the Scottish border). I often forget exactly how much we have on our doorstep.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2169 comments My kindle I've had nearly 4 years, and I love it. (It's a keyboard model, which they don't make anymore, but I prefer that to the touchscreens that everything seems to be these days.)

message 65: by Marian (new)

Marian We have a Kobo Susanna and they are touch screen but its a nice size for me to put in my purse.

message 66: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments I am so glad your husband got a KOBO!!

message 67: by Marian (new)

Marian We watched a couple of older movies this afternoon/evening and now hubby is all happy, that now he can read on his own ereader:)A sci fi story of course:)

message 68: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments I have 2 kindles.. One is about 4-5 years old and the old keyboard style, the other I got for Xmas and is the kindle fire which is like a tablet.
I love them both, they're both synced with my books, but I tend to use the fire now, and my husband takes the older one when he goes away with work.

message 69: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments John.. How are you getting on with the Six Wives? I've just finished the Anne Boleyn chapter 'Happiest of Women'. It good, but things are taking a turn for the worst for Anne now.
I'm enjoying the book, but I do get the impression that Alison doesn't like Anne particularly. The only references she ever used are from Eustace Chapuys who we all know hated Anne with a passion.
Maybe this is due to lack of other evidence at the time but compared to her 'Lady in The Tower' book she's really not painting Anne in a good light.

message 70: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments I think Anne was a self-indulgent, overly ambitious woman; I can't see many endearing trais.

message 71: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments When I read Weir's Lady In The Tower, I was really sympathetic towards Anne.. The fact Henry had sent for her executioner swordsman from Calais before her trial etc suggested that he always knew the outcome..
Her own family condemned her to save their own skins/prospects.
However in this book, so far I'm yet to find something likeable about her!
I'll read other books too as I do think this is very one sided so far. Weir appears to adore KOA and is really tearing AB apart!

message 72: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments I think it's great you are so open-minded, Catherine.

message 73: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments I do try.. I won't base my opinion on one author, but I think I'll definitely give a few others on my list a go before coming to an opinion.
That aside, I'm enjoying the book, and look forward to reading more about the other wives!

message 74: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments You're reading Weir?

message 75: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments Throughout history Katharine of Aragon is well liked and Anne is not.

message 76: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments Yes I'm reading Alison Weir's Six Wives.
I just find the change in tone between her 2 books interesting. KOA was well loved in this country, and AB was not well received at all.
Maybe it's because in this book Weir looks at all wives, and Lady In The Tower focused purely on Anne's downfall that I'm seeing the difference? Who knows.

message 78: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments Keep in mind that Anne is seen as the person who lured the King away from his legal/Catholic wife; therefore, Anne is guilty of seduction for self-gain and Katharine is an innocent victim.

message 79: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments Oh yes, don't get me wrong, I don't believe for a second that Anne was an innocent party in anything!
What I do find unfortunate is how quickly she was cast aside after their marriage. It was a massive anti-climax to their courtship!

Marian Catherine, lhave you ever read any books of Lady Jane Grey?

message 82: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments I read Alison Weir's Innocent Traitor a few weeks ago, it's the first I've read on LJG and it definitely left me wanting to read more!
I really felt for her! A true innocent!

message 84: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments I may be off base, but wasn't there some trumped up charges about Anne and her brother?

message 85: by Marian (new)

Marian I just looked it up on Amazon and the reviews are amazing for it:)Thank you for letting me know. She was the one Catherine that was Queen for 9 days?

message 86: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments That's correct! She was so young too, it's written as historical fiction, so I'm going to look into a non fiction book about her!

Skye : that's also correct, Anne and George were accused of having an incestual relationship. The film The Other Boleyn Girl hints at it too. I believe George's wife, Jane Parker gave some incriminating evidence against them? Then she ended up meeting the same fate 6 years later for her part in Katherine Howard's antics!

message 87: by Marian (new)

Marian To rid himself of his wife, Henry and his chief advisor, Thomas Cromwell, devised a plot whereby Anne was accused of adultery with five men, one of whom was her brother, George. George was charged with incest with the Queen and plotting with Anne to kill the King.

message 88: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments I believe the only time Anne was genuinely an innocent, was at the time of her downfall!
I think she was most likely foul tempered, a bit mean, over ambitious etc, but I don't believe she was guilty of what she was accused of.

message 89: by Marian (new)

Marian And there's really no proof either that she really had relations with these men, particularly her own brother.

message 90: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments Exactly, it's all just based on the 'word' of a few so-called witnesses. Probably bribed too!

message 91: by Marian (new)

Marian On the other hand, she could have.If she was desperate to give the King a son........or maybe at that point all Henry wanted to do was get rid of all the Bolelyn family and this was his plot?So he could move on?To next up..Jane Seymour.

message 92: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments I believe that he did just want Anne put aside for Jane, the Seymour's were the new upcoming family. Also, after Henry had done all he had to marry Anne and cast KOA aside, he would have lost a lot of face asking to divorce Anne so he had to come up with a new plan?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2169 comments Anne Boleyn lost both her life insurance policies in 1536 - first Katherine of Aragon died, and then she "miscarried her saviour."

message 94: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments Yes, the King did; I remember this from my Western Civ class; this was the topic of my paper.. I am hazy about Cardinal Wolsey, and let's see from memory;
Katharine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, ? and Catherine Paar.

message 95: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catleo) | 100 comments Katherine Howard is the Queen in between Anne of Cleves and Katherine Parr. The youngest of his queens and the second to be executed.

message 96: by Skye (new)

Skye | 484 comments That's right, I forgot!!!

message 97: by Marian (new)
