Since they do have different content to the actual book, they tend to be kept separate, as opposed to what we do with abridged versions etc. However since it's becoming more and more common, and some people are combining them as a matter of course, I'm questioning that. The manual doesn't have any direct answer (they aren't abridgements, they do have different content as do adaptations).
James Patterson is a big name author who has a lot of these, so let's use him as an example (look down at the Alex Cross books, many of those have a "Preview" or "Sample" version that is separate from the complete book).
