Krazykiwi | 1767 comments I'm seeing a lot of authors putting samples of books up on Amazon prior to the release of the actual book. These have their own ASIN and are often still available, usually free, even after the actual book is published.

Since they do have different content to the actual book, they tend to be kept separate, as opposed to what we do with abridged versions etc. However since it's becoming more and more common, and some people are combining them as a matter of course, I'm questioning that. The manual doesn't have any direct answer (they aren't abridgements, they do have different content as do adaptations).

James Patterson is a big name author who has a lot of these, so let's use him as an example (look down at the Alex Cross books, many of those have a "Preview" or "Sample" version that is separate from the complete book).

Parts of books are not combined with whole books any more than a single book is combined with an omnibus that contains that volume and others.

Moloch | 3975 comments Abridgements are combined with the full work? I thought not

Abridgements are indeed combined. Adaptations are not.

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Thank you Rivka, that is how i have always understood it too, and it is nice to have it stated clearly.

Could this be added to the manual in the same line as adaptations? I am on the app right this minute and can't check the exact wording to see how easy it would slip in.

Scott | 10051 comments These are just advertisements, and shouldn't be considered books at all, IMO.

Unless that has changed we add them if they have ASINs attached: http://www.amazon.com/Middle-School-S...

But they should be separate, correct?

They are excerpts which have been separately published. They stay.
