Misty | 1505 comments Finished up The Ask and the Answer (544 pages) for the other half of task 2.20 (read with Daughter of the Forest, 560 pages). Patrick Ness continues to blow me away. I love the world he has created, and if any of you haven't read the first in the Chaos Walking series (The Knife of Never Letting Go), I would highly suggest you do. So if any of you are looking for a 5-star push...

I am still planning on reshuffling, but for now:

READ: 17 books, 168.33 points, 6038 pages

COUNTABLE: 15 books, 160 points, 5606 pages

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) 1.20 Graceling by Kristin Cashore (471 pages)

I didn't participate in the first challenge because I hadn't found WT yet. But I noticed that quite a few people read Graceling, and it received great reviews. It totally lived up to my expectations. It would've definitely been a part of my Reading Challenge #1 list had I participated.

Total Points: 175
Total Pages: 4,383

Wow, that was a really good book. Does anyone know if it's the beginning of a series? I truly love and hate series! Love the books, hate the waiting!

message 208: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments It is a series of sorts. They're not sequential, but she has another set in the same world that just came out a few days ago called Fire, and one coming out eventually called Bitterblue. Can you guess who it's about? :)

message 209: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 52 comments New finished tasks...

For 1.5 I read I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, and for the 50-point task I read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton from the Top YA list, The Princess Bride by William Goldman (first published in 1973), A Hero Ain't Nothing But A Sandwich by Alice Childress (published in 1973, won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award), and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (second page on GR YA bookshelf, won the Hugo Award, not sure what genre "hero" is exactly, but it's definitely not sci-fi like Ender's Game).

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) 4.20 Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan

I had a tough time finding a genre I hadn't read before, but then I realized I hadn't ever read a book in the gay/transgendered category. I read Lydia's reviews and used them as a recommendation to read Boy Meets Boy.

I was a bit skeptical when the book started because the characters seems so stereotypical, but after about 25 pages I began to enjoy it. How can you not enjoy a love story?!

I'm not sure that I'd choose a book in this genre again solely because of it. I like a good book period, so gay main characters or not, I am likely to read it!

Mandy (mldavisreads) | 210 comments I finished task 2.20 with Coraline at 192 pages. It kind of creeped me out, but it was a good book. I'm not sure whether or not I want to see the movie :/

Also finished The Adoration of Jenna Fox for task 2.10. It's listed at 265 pages, but I listened to it on audiobook. The audio version was incredible, the narrator's intonation echoed the main character's confusion at her situation perfectly.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) 2/2 for 3.25 Unwind by Neal Shusterman (335 pages)

Just In Case was an award winner published in 2007, the same year Unwind was published. I much prefered Unwind. Just In Case is about a teen's "midlife crisis", which is a good premise but just didn't ring true for me. Unwind is a dystopia book which I enjoyed, with a feel of Uglies or the Giver. If it was my choice the award would not have gone to Just In Case.

15. Read a book classified as ADULT that you think would be good for YA, and then post why you think it would be good for YA.

Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot - 336 pages

Meg Cabot is already known for her Princess Diaries Series. This is classified as an adult novel, but could be good for YA. The main character is graduating from college. There are some sex scenes, but there are some in young adult novels as well.

Shanna | 51 comments 2.5 I Hate Books!

3.5 All-American Girl

I really enjoyed this first book in the All-American girl series.
Artsy Samantha Madison is the classic middle child outcast(I so relate). Her older sister being the beauty and younger being the brains, she finds it hard to find her place. Convinced she is in love with her older sisters boyfriend, Jack. She is blind to what is right in front of her. This is a very cute novel about finding who you really are and making statements unafraid of what others think. I really liked it and can't wait to read the next one is the series Ready or Not. This book has won 4 or 5 awards. And it totally deserves them.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) 2/2 for 3.20 Crispin The Cross of Lead by Avi (320 pages)

Crispin won the Newbery Award the same year that Pictures of Hollis Woods was a Newbery Honor winner.

While I preferred Pictures of Hollis Woods, I think that Crispin was well written, albeit predictable. Historical fiction can be difficult to read sometimes, but for younger readers (5-8 grades) it was a good choice to win.

Oh I've been so busy!

3.5 Hitler Youth Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow. I started a discussion on it. It was definitely honor and maybe even award worthy. I tore right through it and it was nice to see different points of view.

3.15 Crispin The Cross of Lead Newbery award winner for 2003 and A Single Shard Newbery award winner for 2002. They both dealt with outcast, orphaned boys who find a cranky, unwilling father figure. The boys also both go on quests and wind up being more self-reliant. They also both took place in the Middle Ages, although on opposite sides of the earth. I liked them both, which was a little surprising since I don't usually like Avi.
