I read this book in the last few years. A young man goes to be trained as a sort of warrior and is quickly made the leader of a team. They travel through portals and a sort of in between place which is very colourful. He befriends an enemy character, a white balloon shaped thing that communicates through changing colour. It goes back to his world with him. Others are not pleased. He is eventually exiled after a mission goes horribly wrong
