Ared | 4 comments A science fiction short story from pre-80's. A rocket crash lands back on earth after thousands of years. Find a utopian society that appears to have no technology. The crew assimilate back into society, with the exception of one man. He keeps trying to develop technology, and society keeps blocking him. It ends with a female crew member getting ready to have a baby. And a local pulling a helicopter out of a barn to enable her mate to get to her side. The technological man says something to the effect 'what is that?!' The answer: just because we have the technology does not mean it is in the best interest of man to use it.
It was in a compilation of other science fiction short stories.
Thank you in advance if you can help me find it!

Andy | 2124 comments That sounds somehow familiar - the idea is that the locals always had the technology, but don't emphasize it in their everyday life, right?

Maybe something by Cliff Simak?

Would you mind giving a look at the link and see which one comes to you as perhaps being the one?
Thank you,

Andy | 2124 comments I didn't have a specific Simak story in mind - he's well-known for writing stories with a pastoral theme though, so I thought of him for this story.

Ared, I added some book details to the header/ topic title. Feel free to edit it.

Did the collection contain short stories by famous sci-fi authors? From different countries? Common theme(s)?

Michele | 2488 comments Possibly the short story "Houston, Houston, Do You Read?" by James Tiptree, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston...

Ky | 457 comments There's a short story by Erik Frank Russell called Late Night Final which features a stern Commander Cruin of the Huldian Empire and his crew, who try to assimilate a peaceful society into their Empire. The crew soften up towards the people but Cruin remains unyielding in his determination to conquer. I'm not sure if this is your short story as not all the points match but you might check out the author's bibliography.
