frugalitymom (frugalitymom) Hi my name is Venessa and I love to read! I am married with two kids and I go to school full time. I am currently working on my bachelors in history. When time permits I love reading non fiction (mostly history), mysteries, amish fiction, and historical fiction to name a few. :)

Amanda D. (tinyminx) | 31 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Amanda and I'm trying to jumpstart my reading this winter. I figured using a challenge aspect would make things more fun! I adore romance novels and I write for both Book Riot and Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. Really looking forward to interacting with everyone and if I get fifty points (paltry, I know) by the end of the challenge, I'll be happy. :)

message 1256: by Margie (new)

Margie Welcome Amanda! Hope you get a lot of reading done!

Becks (technicolorii) | 22 comments Hey, everyone!

I'm Rebecca, I'm 22, currently living in Southern Ontario, Canada, and making the transition from recent graduate to full-time employee. This challenge seems like the perfect way to give me that extra push to try and read more. I wasn't sure at first if I should participate but then I spent all of this evening finding books to fit the different tasks so... I joined. I'm looking forward to earning SOME points and bringing down my substantial TBR pile!

message 1258: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 74 comments glad for another younger - sort of - reader. I hear that Ontario is beautiful! Been to Montreal and quebec.

Some of my hobbies include hiking, climbing (mostly indoor), camping (I'm an Eagle Scout) writing, watching movies, and of course reading. I was introduced to both goodreads and this challenge by my sister Dayna and look forward to giving it my all this season (winter 2014/2015) !!

Hey, Jesse! You are one busy guy! It's so cool that you can do so much and still find time for reading. The Challenge is awesome. Welcome, and have fun!

I am single and a book nerd so I have no life..lol. This challenge sounds a bit intense but fun at the same time so I am curious about it. :)

message 1266: by Drea (new)

Drea (dreasfreckles) Hey everybody! I'm Drea. I'm 33, happily married, recently relocated to Phoenix, AZ and have a one year old. I'm hoping this challenge helps me read more. Since having my son, it takes me MONTHS to read a book and that makes me sad :(

I LOVE reading. Favorite author? Stephen King. I think I've read 90% of his books. I'm late to the Winter Challenge since I just found out about it last week but I can't wait to get started.

The rules were a little overwhelming but I think I've got a pretty good understanding of how this works. I'm excited to get some reading in!

Thanks!

message 1267: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3 comments Good evening everyone! I am 45, married for 20 years with two children. I saw this challenge on the Book Riot blog and am trying to get through the rules to challenge myself to reading a larger variety of books to break out of my ruts.

Thanks!

Linda Hi everyone, my name is Linda. I have just joined the winter seasonal challenge and am excited to get started. I have always loved to read but find that sometimes I let other things crowd out my reading time so I hope having a goal will challenge me to read more. I am 51 years old and live in Mobile, AL with my husband, Jimmy and our college age son and daughter.

message 1272: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 19 comments Hello!! I found out about the Seasonal Reading Challenge today while looking for good challenges to take up in 2015 and this looks like it will fulfill my needs just fine :)

My name is Adriana, and I'm currently completing a Masters on Critical Gender Studies in Hungary, but I'm Colombian. Reading is pretty much my favorite thing to do, but the amount of work of my current program is so intense that I ended up running away from books whenever I got the chance. I miss reading for pleasure so much though, and my TBR pile keeps growing... anyway. It's a pleasure to be here and hopefully I'll be able to stick to the challenges and make a dent in my book pile!

message 1273: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (kristenia) | 1119 comments Hi! I just came across this group/challenge and I'm so excited to get started with the Winter Reading Challenge. I live in the US, in Iowa (we have perfect reading weather in the winter). I am married with two little boys (4 1/2 & 16 months). They keep me very busy! I also work part-time outside of the home so my reading time is pretty limited, but it is a fun escape and I have found since joining other reading challenges that having reading goals definitely helps me carve out time to read! I am excited for the variety of tasks and am hoping to expand my reading horizons a bit. I've tended toward romance (both historical and contemporary), with a dash of mystery and suspense from time to time. Every now and again, I'll read something meatier, but I tend towards lighter fare these days. Thanks for creating this challenge. I'm really looking forward to diving in!

message 1277: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (godsmissiongal) | 3 comments Hello, My names is Audrey and I love reading Historical Fiction books. I am 29 years old and have one 6-year-old son. I am happily married since 2006 and currently live in Seattle Washington area. We moved to the area from Kentucky last year. I have a love for history and anything related to genealogy/family history. I read quite a bit with my son who is an avid reader. He is easily reading chapter books and loves books on science especially Anatomy and Chemistry.
I read 100 books this year and hope to read many more in 2015. Took a few months off in the middle of the year due to buying a house and moving. Also trying to get healthier so been spending more time in the gym.
I enjoy reading many different genres but have a special interest in Quaker history, English Monarchs especially between the reign of Henry VIII and Victoria, American Slavery and race relations (including the underground railroad), and Christian non-fiction books. Some of my favorite authors include: Philippa Gregory, Lisa Tawn Bergren, Francine Rivers, Beth Moore, and C. S. Lewis.

Happy (worldhasteeth) | 173 comments Hi, my name is Shelley, but I also go by Happy online. I'm a middle-aged Anglo-American woman disabled with ME/CFS who lives in England with my husband and dog. I am an avid reader, particularly new books. My personal 2015 challenge is to explore books written by diverse authors - lgbt, other nations, religions, disabilities, etc. Basically moving away from straight white male authors, since I've been reading their stories all of my life. I'm not sure if that aspiration is compatible with this game, but I thought I'd give it a try and see. :)

message 1279: by Lex (new)

Lex (lexluxxe) | 2 comments Hello, my name is Lex but I'm Fresh in this challenge. I actually was looking to set my GoodReads 2015 goal when I came across this group. I might do both (if anyone has done it I would love to know if it was a success for you or not) but I really like this challenge because it's not just numbers. I like the constraints and deadlines. I feel like with technology today the sanctity of reading is starting to get comprised with speed reading apps and even ebooks.

My personal goals with reading in the next year is to really learn from my chosen books (I even bought moleskine notebooks to take notes on every book I read), expand my subject matter, and push my limits. In 2013, I completed my GR goal of 20 books. Since I didn't participate this year I wanted to try again and read more in 2015. I chose the name Fresh for this challenge from one of my favorite movies of the same name. I figured for a challenge like this I'll need creative thinking and wit to be successful.

One subject I've been getting more into is data and math which is astonishing to me since I consider myself a liberal arts person. I've done spot work in advertising research, programming, and data entry so I figure a career transition into data science fits me since a lot of the concepts I am already familiar with. I always thought I'd have a career in the creative field but data science and visualization is getting my interest more and more these days. I'm that person with a million interests, and multiple capacities for different subjects. I think data science may work well for me.

Normally, you'll find these types of books on me: finance, history, philosophy, productivity, black nationalism, spiritual, and media/creativity. I'm big on nonfiction which makes it super hard for me to pick up a novel. But I do have a favorite fiction author and that's Toni Morrison.

Margie Welcome to all the newbies! Hope you enjoy being here!

message 1281: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 74 comments Wow, what a comment. I never was big on fiction but now I'm into this genre and it can be escape, escape, escape! Sure better than drugs and alcohol!

message 1283: by Lola (new)

Lola | 283 comments Hi, everyone! I am new to the group, which I found when trying to think of ways to spice up my Goodreads number challenge. I have done the Goodreads number challenge for two years now. Although I've met (and exceeded) those goals, I decided that this year I wanted to do something beyond sheer numbers. Both this year and last I found myself choosing shorter books toward the end of challenge just so I could make the arbitrary goal I set for myself. I wanted to do something different for 2015 than just set a higher (and harder to achieve) number goal.

The first new challenge I found was Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge. This really appealed to me because the tasks will give some focus to my reading. I have sooooo many books in the TBR pile (both physical and virtual) but often can't decide what to read next. Someone in the comment section for that group posted a link for a Bingo card to use with the challenge (thank you!) and I printed out copies for both me and my teenaged daughter who be participating as well. We are excited to start that one!

I stumbled across this challenge while looking for ideas for that one. I initially thought it was too complicated and confusing, but the more I explored the group threads, the more I understood and the more excited I got about doing this one, too. It almost feels like a treasure hunt to me, trying to match the books I have with the tasks in the challenge. I am really looking forward to participating!

message 1284: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Lorraine, I didn't know about the Read Harder challenge (will have to go look that up), but Books on the Nightstand did bingo this summer and it was so fun. I know they are planing on doing it again next year (Memorial day through Labor Day).

message 1285: by Jill (new)

Jill (jowen3) Wow lots of different places people are from. I am in Idaho and I love it here but don't care for the cold winters.

I love to read and scrapbook. I home school my children but some of them will go to public school next year.

I am a little overwelmed by all the post, rules and information that goes along with these reading challenges, I have never done this before, so not sure what to do next now that I have requested my name, so I guest I better start reading more of the information.

I have a 23 year-old daughter who loves to read as well. I love to read just about anything except heavy romance and erotica. I enjoying writing reviews, and scrapbooking also. :)

message 1287: by dragon (last edited Jan 10, 2015 04:55PM) (new)

dragon (cuteboys) Hello! Uhm so I'm not sure what to say...

I'm a college student right now working on a bachelors in studio art and minor in history, I work at my public library as the children's dept page (part-time but I'm really tempted to look for a full-time job soon)

I enjoy reading but haven't done enough of it lately, hoping to improve that (and by reading I mean chapter books that are more than 200 pages and have more words than pictures)

My age makes me cry because I keep getting older as the years pass and yeah, my birthday is coming up...let's just say I'm 18 forever (I can pass as a HS student).

Hobbies include reading, drawing, writing, photography, traveling, school, people watching, driving, volleyball, bowling, internet surfing, coffee-drinking, anime, manga, and a lot of other stuff. I don't like animals, most hot drinks, cooking, chores, doing homework, and a lot of other things.

I'm from IL, lived most of my life in Chicago but then I moved to a suburb about an hour away. Most of my life still consists of Chicago though

Genres I like: pretty much anything except for sci-fi/high fantasy (I get lost in details)

I'd really like to participate in the challenge but I'm having a hard time understanding how it works (rules and directions escape my grasp, too many words and I read it twice haha). Maybe next time...(I have attention issues)

(It looks like there's a lot of library staff around here)

Lisette
First - if you haven't already done so, request a Readerboard name.

Next - pick ONE task of the many and try to read a book that fits. Start with the 5, 10 or 15 point tasks, most of which required only one book.

If you are not sure the book you've chosen fits a particular task, go to the help thread for that task and ask ... you MUST include a link to the exact book you are reading (see the little add book/author link right above the comment box)

When you've read the book, post something like this:

Task # 5.10 - Who's Your Muse - read any book of your choice
A Little Princess
IL: MG - BL: 6.0 - AR Pts: 11.0

NOTE - because the book has "childrens" on the main page I had to include the AR Bookfinder data.

Anyway, that's it. Hope that helps.

Rima Rkein (breemz) | 2 comments Hello, My name is Rima. I am from Beirut Lebanon. I am 25 years old. I was introduced to GR by a friend. I've been reading for as long as I can remember. I've recently started looking for challenges to join and found this group. This will officially be the first time i enter a challenge and discussions related to a book. I've always been a solitary reader and rarely discusses books i've read with others. So this place should be a good start :)

Nope ... skip around however you like. Do as many or as few as you feel comfortable with. MOST of the players never finish the full task list.

Just have fun.

I'm a GR veteran (since 2011) and have heard about this challenge from numerous other groups that I'm in, mainly Sheila and NancyHelen. As a certified challenge junkie, I just couldn't resist.

I'm an eclectic reader and read in most genres but my favorites are mystery/thriller and romance of all kinds.

Looking forward to beginning the challenge :0)
