message 1154: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindyd) I'm Cindy C.and I'm a teacher, so I read some YAL in order to have recently published books to suggest to students. I've taught mostly high school English, but now I work with middle school kids (with a few high schoolers). I live in Southern California with my hubby and my cat, Sylvester. I read a wide variety of books (fiction and nonfiction) and I listen to audio books in my car. I'm looking forward to this challenge. :)

message 1155: by Pat (new)

Pat (peakles) | 145 comments I also read Rachel's article on Book Riot. This sounds like one of the most fun activities ever! Since I started following Book Riot (and Rebecca, Amanda, etc.) on Twitter, I have created a totally unmanageable TBR list, but the SRC gives me a strategy for attacking the list now.
I'm a programmer and IT analyst living in Alabama. Can't wait to get started!

Jane De vries | 74 comments I love audiobooks and worked for one year with middle schoolers. That is a challenging age but they need someone nonjudgmental who will try to understand them! Can that be done through books?

message 1157: by Mindi (last edited Sep 08, 2014 06:28PM) (new)

Mindi (gows33) | 47 comments Hi everyone!

This is my first time doing the challenge. My name is Mindi, I'm 39, and I'm originally from Dayton, Ohio. I currently live in Atlanta, Georgia.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English, and spent around 12 years working in software quality assurance. Unfortunately, it took me 12 years to realize that a technical field really isn't for me, so I'm currently re-evaluating my career path, and trying to decide if and/or when I should go back to school.

I read constantly, and have been surrounded by books my entire life. My Father would gather my brother and me in his lap and spend hours reading to us, even as very young children. I remember listening to him read novels like Treasure Island, and books about Ocean life, science, astronomy and history.

As early as I can remember I was asking for books, and had amassed a substantial library by the time I was in grade school. I'm really proud to say that to this day I still own many of those beloved books.

My favorite genres are horror, mystery/suspense, classics, and science fiction, however, I will pretty much read anything. I love non-fiction as well.

It's lovely to meet all of you, and I wish you all the best of luck with the challenge!

message 1159: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 1360 comments Hi all - I'm dropping in from the 1001 Challenge Group where I saw a suggestion for joining this group as a way of picking the next books to read. I'm not actually having that problem at the moment (my stack of books to read within a time limit is really quite tall now, thank goodness I'm a fast reader!) but a new group is always fun.

I am also 39 years old, I'm a kiwi but I'm currently living in London and plan of staying for the forseeable future.

I used to be a huge bookworm but I tailed off and found it difficult to find decent books to read. After committing to the 1001 challenge a few weeks ago this is no longer a problem!

I seem to like nearly all books with the exeption of trashy chick lit and the such like. Even books that don't really grab me I still tend to enjoy if they are well written and bring something different to the table.

I haven't really gotten my head around the whole challenge set up of this group yet but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

message 1161: by Melissa (last edited Sep 10, 2014 09:40AM) (new)

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments Hello, I'm Melissa. I've been a Goodreads user since 2007 but for some reason hadn't run across this group until Rachel's post on Book Riot last week (hi, Rachel!). I was a little hesitant because the SRC seemed a bit complicated for my taste but then I realized that I was already keeping an Access database of books read so I could capture information beyond what Goodreads does....so, what the heck? I thought I'd join in the fun, too :) And I've got a monstrous TBR to whittle down so the SRC should help with that. Off to read the Rules again and get a Readername.

Célia | Estante de Livros (celiamar) | 17 comments Hello, I'm Célia from Portugal and I'm 32 years old. I read about this challenge in Book Riot and decided to give it a chance. I have, at this moment, more or less 350 physical books waiting to be read and this year I decided I would start to tackle it. I'm being successful (reduced it in 55 books since the beginning of the year), but any way I can use to help me with this is great. I realised challenges are really useful, and this one has the additional fun of making me find books that fit into each category. The Fall Challenge is my first, and hopefully not the last :)

message 1164: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (summerlynn) | 43 comments Hello everyone. I enjoy reading mostly YA, Historical Fiction, and Sci-Fi but I enjoy a good story not matter what genre! I really enjoy Goodreads and this group is certainly going to expand my horizons. Great idea!

message 1166: by Arwen (new)

Arwen (arwenr) Hello! My name is Arwen. I've been a Goodreads member for a long time but been very lax about keeping up with reviewing and noting my books since my kids were born. They are 4 and 1 1/2 and keep me very busy. I still manage to read about 1 book a week or so and my mom and I are both doing the fall challenge together. I figure that even if I don't get very far, it should be a fun way to read new books!

message 1167: by James (new)

James Loftus Hi,

James is my name. I have a novel, Celtic Blood and love writing.

message 1168: by AnneS (new)

AnneS Spillers (annesva) | 4 comments Hi,

I'm Anne and I have loved to read since I learned (and according to my Mom since I was born).

As others noted I heard about this on BookRiot! Thanks, I'm excited but 100% sure I won't get too far this time.

Honestly, I joined more to expand my reading horizons, walk away from the computer more and have an excuse to do something I love.

I work full-time and have a 2.5 year old so reading time is grabbed here and there.

Super excited and spent last night planning my books. I too have a monster TBR list so I'm hoping this will whittle that down.

message 1169: by Katie (new)

Katie | 12 comments Hi. I'm Katie. I'm 34 and am also a full-time Adult Services Librarian in a suburb outside New York City. My reading tastes tend to be all over the map, so after reading about this challenge on Book Riot, I immediately decided to join.

I find it's hard to decide what to read next, despite spending most of my time reading reviews and surrounded by books, so I thought this challenge would be fun.

Mindi (gows33) | 47 comments Jane wrote: "Hi Mindy. Great to know there is another reader under the age of 80!! Who is your favorite mystery writer? i have never been into horros but maybe you can tell me why Stephen King is so popular!"

Hi Jane!
I love Tana French, Carol Goodman, and Gillian Flynn the most when it comes to mysteries.

Horror is probably my favorite genre, but that includes suspense/thrillers. Stephen King is a fabulous writer, but I also love Dan Simmons, H.P. Lovecraft, Scott Smith, Ramsey Campbell, Thomas Harris, Peter Straub, and Richard Matheson.

King's stories are are well written and scary enough to keep you up at night. He has certainly written some modern masterpieces, and I recommend The Shining to everyone I meet.

It's lovely to meet you!

message 1171: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melissaboedigheimer) Hello! My name is Melissa. I am 35 years old and live in Minnesota. I am married to the love of my life, Bruce, and we have a 17 year old son, Ryan, who recently left the nest to start his life journey and we miss him terribly! I am also "mom" to the grouchiest cat in the world, Gus, and an extremely spoiled miniature schnauzer, Max.
I love to read from many different genres on either my Kindle or a good old fashioned book (who doesn't love the smell of the pages of a book??) I just finished The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and just started A King of Infinite Space by Tyler Dilts. I look forward to meeting all of you and creating new friendships with other booklovers!

message 1179: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Hello. My name is Nicole. I am 30 years old and live in Mid-Michigan. I am married to a wonderful man who I've influenced to become an avid reader himself. I do not have any children of my own, but I do have a beautiful step-daughter who is starting her second year in college.

Outside of reading, I love to have new experiences and adventures. I love to travel when I can. I have also been known to participate in activities, such as: The Warrior Dash, The Color Run, Tough Mudder, Dragonboat Races, Martial Arts, a Polar Plunge (to raise money for Special Olympics), etc.

I love reading but I've noticed that I tend to stick to the same types of books (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, YA, etc.) so I've been looking for ways to force myself to step out of my box. This group looked like it might help me do just that! I'm excited to get started!

message 1180: by Terra (new)

Terra (terra_g) Hey all! I'm Terra in Columbus, Ohio. I'm married with 3 young girls at home and now that they are getting a bit older, I'm finally finding time to read (and not just in the bathtub!). This year I've finished about 20 books, which is amazing for me, considering when my girls were tiny, it was more like 2 a year if I was lucky.

I used to prefer nonfiction but now I'm up for almost everything. I like hiking and gardening and was on an outdoorsy/adventure reading kick for a little wild and read Wild, A Walk in the Woods and Into Thin Air.

My favorite books this year, so far, were Constellation of Vital Phenomena, A Tale for the Time Being, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookshop and All the Light We Cannot See. I'm currently reading Life after Life and the Path Between the Seas and on the waiting list for In The Kingdom of Ice.

I'm a bit compulsive so a challenge like this could be dangerous, but best-case I hope it gets me to put away the TV remote and other time wasters and helps me to read more.

message 1181: by Erika (new)

Erika Edwards (erikawithak) | 110 comments Hi! I am Erika with a K. I am a 29 year old mother of 2, an artist, and an assistant librarian at my local library. I have a bachelor's degree in art, and am also on break from getting my master's degree in art therapy and counseling. I have a blog called The Process (www.livefortheprocess.com) where artists can get inspiration and support in the creative process.

I love to read and already take part in some other reading challenges. I also like photography, jewelry design, beadwork, journaling, and writing.

I am excited to be a part of the group!

message 1182: by Trish (last edited Sep 27, 2014 06:12AM) (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3678 comments Hi. I'm Trish (trishhartuk comes from the fact that when I signed up to gmail, I couldn't get my name without the uk on the end, and so I have a habit of using it for other things as well).

I live in sunny London town (so I write dates the British way around!), with a hubby and three cats. I work in the City, where I'm a research editor, so words are my business, as well as a major hobby.

I'm an avid reader (tube commute + sitting in the park at lunchtime), but I have a habit of getting into genre ruts (mainly cozies, crime, urban fantasy, SF/spec fic, young adult, some history).

I stumbled across the SRC by accident, but it looks like it could be good fun. I like book clubs (and this is a pretty big one!) and those "100 books you must read" type lists, because they make me look outside my usual genres towards something I wouldn't otherwise have read. Embarrassed as I am to admit it, without a book club, I would never have read To Kill a Mockingbird, which is now one of my favourite books.

It also gives me a reason to go through my TBR list (which is about three years long!) and actually read some of them. Yes, I am that person who thinks "ooh, that looks interesting" and buys a book, with no idea when I'm going to read it!

I'm also an amateur photographer, when I'm not reading or working.

message 1184: by Laura (new)

Laura (lent) | 122 comments Hi,I'm Laura, I live in the Bronx, and I'm a scientist. I love to read, but have a two year old so that is a bit hard these days. Love the idea of this challenge and will do my best to at least complete some of the tasks!

message 1185: by Trish (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3678 comments Jane wrote: "If you are British, can it be assumed that you like Dickens?"

I've not read a lot of Dickens, as for some reason I got through an English degree without doing any (our tutor ignored most of the 19th century!). I did read Our Mutual Friend a while back and enjoyed it.

message 1186: by Libby (new)

Libby Frances (libbyfrances) | 2 comments My name is Elizabeth and I am turning 25 in January. I am currently looking hard for a job. I have previously worked at Wal-Mart as a cashier and at Kroger as a baker. I first learned to read, on my own, at the age of four. The first book I ever read was Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. I cherish this book and still love reading it. It sends a great message that you should love yourself, and your name, no matter what anybody else thinks or says; something I at times forget. My favourite books: The Harry Potter series, Copper Sun (anything written by Sharon Draper), Sundays At Tiffany’s, My Sister’s Keeper, and The Princess Diaries.

I love music. I listen to music every day or have it playing in my head. My favourite genres of music are rock, alternative, some metal, classic rock, pop, folk and indie rock. My favourite artists from each are Nirvana, Coldplay, In This Moment, Fleetwood Mack, Katy Perry, Mumford and Sons and Grouplove. I love nearly every genre of music. I wish I could play music myself but unfortunately my violin needs new strings and the bow needs fixing. So for now, my voice will have to do. I also love to crochet. I am currently making a blanket for my cousin Sammy. He will be turning ten this year and requested for me to make him one two years ago. I have been “working’ on it for far too long. I am now finally nearly finished and will have it done by December, which is the month his birthday is in.

I am looking forward to taking up this challenge and get back to what I love doing the most: immersing myself in the written word.

message 1187: by Margie (new)

Margie Hi, my name is Margie. I saw this group and thought it would be the perfect challenge for me. I love keeping track of anything! And I love reading.

I live in GA with my husband of 32 years. Both our children live on the west coast, where we lived for 28 years. We moved back to the east coast to take care of and be with our parents. We will eventually move back to the west coast.

Currently I work in a museum gift shop, part-time. My husband and I like to camp, go on motorcycle trips, and work in the yard. I also scrapbook and sew.

I am really looking forward to this group and all of the challenges!

I live in Seattle. With the rain, I read and write. I also, paint and draw. I like exploring new books and talking about them. I'm mostly a wallflower when it comes to groups, but I'll make a effort to come out of my shell. I look forward to making some new connections.
