Those who have been blessed by Amaterasu and are capable of creating light spheres and energy in general. They can heal people using their warmth and light, and naturally thrive in colder climates. They have increased vitality, agility and physical skills as well. However, there are very few of them alive, and those who are alive are being hunted by the government, and thus try to stay close together just in case they need to fend for themselves. Each is equipped with a guardian of sorts. Usually mythological creatures like a griffin or a unicorn that tends to symbolize what kind of person they are and how they utilize their light. In dire situations, they can become light, and quickly escape a situation through electrical lines, or simply by moving somewhere else at the speed of light, similar to teleporting. Each Light Bearer also has an ability unique to them. A gift from the goddess that also says something about their personality. One might have a poison touch, if they are naturally charismatic with words like venom. Another might be able to control plants if they are caring and nurturing like a mother would be.
Usually the result of government experimentation, it is not uncommon for cyborgs to have zero family left, to have lost everything, to be weak willed. Cyborgs are tools used by the Elite Unit, the overarching system of power controlling the world and the distribution of light. The majority of the time they are sent in as riot control or as assassins. They don't have any other purpose other than to take orders and adhere to rules. They still retain a lot of their memories, their personality, their thoughts. But they cannot always control themselves, as the government doesn't hesitate to complete shut down their thought processes. They have no rights. They have no respect. They have no honor.
Naturally gifted hunters catch the attention of the Hunters Triad, three gods that rule over the planes of Hircine, an immortal hunting ground in a completely different dimension. Similar to the way Homura chooses his marked ones, the Hunters Triad pick humans they find most fit for their gift, and they taint their blood with that of an animal's, gifting them with the ability to become that animal itself. Each subject would receive the same silver ring with a rose pendant. If those touched do not wear their rings, they will slowly lose their minds, go feral, and become unable to shift back into their human form, essentially becoming the very animal that they were gifted with. They don't have a very prominent place in society. Their reputation varies greatly from place to place but many simply consider them folklore, fairy tales. They generally conceal their gift from the public, afraid of outrage, or backlash from the government.
On the outskirts of society, where there is no government structures, temples dot the darkened land. Most, are abandoned, but some, like those of the Moon Goddess, are inhabited by humans of great strength and intelligence. Humans touched by the gods themselves, that understand secret, hidden languages, that understand forgotten words. One such type of people are the Tsukimasu, the protectors of the moon. Not often do they tread into society. As such they aren't very knowledgeable when it comes to customs. They're usually quite silent and reserved, females brought up to believe that humans are scum, but scum that can be tamed. Through the power of a magic only known to the Moon Goddess and Homura, they can collect up to five low leveled yokai as slaves, using something they've dubbed "Tsuki-slips". Typically a piece of parchment with a single symbol written in the blood of a yokai. This symbol means "power", and it takes years to master the meaning behind it. The Tsukimasu are an ancient tribe, predominantly a matriarchy, that have walked the darkest plains of Kuro for hundreds of years. The yokai they capture have to be below level six. Mostly okami, kitsunes, and occasionally others, they're used ironically as protectors, to hunt down feral yokai and kill them. The Tsukimasu often spend their time travelling the lands of Kuro like bounty hunters, tracking yokai with specifically deadly reputations and ripping them from the surface (usually by death).
Yokai can come in a variety of forms with an incredibly vast array of powers. But there is a limitation to those powers. Yokai can NEVER create light, sunshine, or life. They cannot heal people, and can only destroy. Though many have found loopholes to this rule, and have created ways to use their destructive powers for good. Types of Yokai will be listed below. Feel free to suggest any other ones.
Kitsunes are usually of slave origin when it comes to the yokai caste system and are generally treated with a lack of respect due to their unpredictable nature and bad reputation. They have three main forms, their fox form, their mid form (half fox half human) , and then their human form. They can conjure a blue flame dubbed "fox fire" that has soothing properties but is normally used for destructive purposes. Despite the bad rep they have, kitsunes are usually non aggressive and aren't very hostile in nature. While some might be a bit more easily provoked, kitsunes generally don't cause as many problems as people think, and are a lot more peaceful than other yokai types.
Amabies are the succubi of the yokai realm and are easily found around bodies of water deep on the outskirts of the outer world cities. They are usually not of good intent, and don't care about the fate of humanity, but rather, the fate of themselves. Many describe them as beautiful, selfish creatures who care for no one but themselves. They often tread into human territory without a care in mind, as they can go from their usual half aquatic form, to a full human form. They aren't as deeply effected by light as their yokai brethren, and as such, can invade human land without much of a problem. Their main abilities range from the art of seduction to entering the dreams of the weak minded, as well as breathing under water in both forms.Within the caste system, Amabies are typically varying from middle class to nobility. They are prideful creatures and as such, NEVER indulge in slavery. Most are self obsessed, and consider material wealth a very clear indicator of status. So many do obtain several slaves just for show. They climb the caste system easily as well, due to their ruthlessness and cutthroat nature.
"People of Mist", yokai with the ability to become mist, to become smoke. These yokai represent beauty in every form, from riches to fame, to their own specific forms. They are very fortunate, lucky in all aspects of life, and are known to be quite promiscuous and easy going. Many work at night clubs or strip joints as bartenders or strippers, sometimes even prostitutes. Despite how easily life comes to them, many are naive and easily taken advantage of, which is why a lot of that fortune and fame is stolen from them and they live a life as prostitutes and icons of sex.
Usually among the royal guard, Gozu are beserker types with limited mental abilities. Sometimes their gifted with telepathy but the majority of their skill lies in their physical capabilities. They are incredibly strong, able to lift things that ten men couldn't. This often leads to them struggling to control their brute strength, and also coincidentally, their anger. They aren't always guards though, and sometimes they're just in gangs as hired hands or mercenaries. They aren't particularly social but they are said to be very warm hearted yokai with a special sensitivity towards children. They are usually treated with respect in society, and seen as peace makers of sorts.
Kawako are typically child spirits that enjoy invading the dreams of their victims and are particularly hostile towards humans, of which is their main victim in the majority of these situations. Some however, aren't actually aggressive, and might even help people if asked. It all depends on the specific Kawako and their own personal preferences. They spend their time on the surface, terrorizing humanity.
Typically of werewolf like nature, Okami are either incredibly hostile, or incredibly protective in nature and there aren't many in betweens heard of. A lot of the time they'll even latch onto another person, be they human or otherwise, and they'll actually choose them as a mate, romantic or platonic. They are predatory and very in touch with their raw visceral instincts, and as such, are considered more animal than yokai in a lot of cases. When they're protective, they'll often cling to their chosen host, becoming dependent on that person. They are incredibly strong and stubborn, choosing to do things their way and their way only.
Humans and yokai have intermixed before, and while it's definitely frowned upon in both human and yokai society, it has been documented before. The human would have near immortality, and would share a lot of the traits of the yokai rather than the human, considering the yokai would have the stronger, more dominate traits. They are called the Osakabe, and are treated like scum in society, which often forces them to live on the surface world. Light does not affect them, as they are both a child of Amaterasu, and a child of Homura. They can choose to hide their abilities if they feel the need, and many born under a yokai and human interbreed are forced to conceal their powers in surface society and pretend to be human. Though that can be notably difficult, considering that the Osakabe have stronger powers than both parents combined, their powers are so intensified that they're actually considered dangerous by many.
The Nepra are those yokai that have lived in the world for millions of years. Their species is dwindling, as is the case with most of the species that have lived as long as them. But their influence does not falter. They are commonly seen amongst royalty or high nobility, and can be quite snobby but fairly talented in areas of politics. They rarely set foot in Tyvia, and despite being extremely gifted in their control of the elements and shaping the land, they don't actually like nature all that much and are far more well known for being profound mathematicians and scientists. Many are even responsible for the technological advancements of the yokai realm, especially military weapons. ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏʙɪʟɪᴛʏ ᴀɴᴅ ʀᴏʏᴀʟᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Sᴀʟᴀᴄɪᴀ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Revered, some of the most highly respected members of yokai society, the Ryuraijin are ancient yokai that can become massive dragons of varying color and size. They've walked this planet for thousands of years, and some are as old as the gods themselves. Many can control different elements, after spending so long honing their skills concerning forgotten hymns and magic. They don't usually care for humanity, and as such, tend to avoid going to the surface. They are completely unaffected by the sun's light, or any other light for that matter, and whether or not they prefer being in their weakest human like form or their impressive dragon form all depends on the ryuraijin. ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏʙɪʟɪᴛʏ ᴀɴᴅ ʀᴏʏᴀʟᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Fᴜᴊɪɴ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Shinigami, otherwise known as "Reapers", are the collectors of the souls of the dead. They are highly respected within the yokai societ, despite the fact that they are eternal servants, rather than the privileged royalty like the Nepra or others among their rank. Often times they aren't even considered the yokai, but rather, actual demi gods, given that they can rip the literal souls out of people. However, that's against their terms, and they are usually very fair individuals with a strong sense of what is just. They are also considered the judges of the overworld. Their judgement will decide what happens to the souls, whether or not they carry on through reincarnation, or if they're simply stored in a library within the reaper realm "Purgatory", or if they go on to live their life the way it is. But what they have to do, regardless of their choice, is capture the cinematic record of every being that they reap. These include the entire life's events, and if not taken, the souls might grow restless with their own memories replaying in their minds. When souls are not reaped immediately after death, and remain in the body with the record still intact, they often wander away and haunt a certain location for all eternity, eventually fading into non existence. Sometimes other yokai arrive on the scene as well, to eat the souls of the dead that have not yet been claimed. Like scavengers.A Shinigami spawns after a human has killed themselves and ended their life before their specific due date. They are collected by the goddess Izanami, the goddess of death, and they are remade into an entirely new entity, a yokai. Then they are forced into eternal servitude (but they have the weekends off because Izanami's not a freakin monster). If they fail to do their daily duties correctly, and do not show a general aptitude for their work as reapers, they will be exiled into the farthest, darkest reaches of Purgatory known as the "outer realm", basically every reaper's nightmare. Within it, reapers are forced to manually create each and every scythe specific to their individual reaper (they don't get weekends off). The Shinigami still function a lot like humans and are one of the only species of yokai that require sleep and food, every now and then. They use a lot of energy in their daily travels and many even have poor eyesight (no one really knows why). Their eyes to humans are a bright green/yellow, which usually cues to others that they are shinigami. Sometimes shinigami go to great lengths to hide their eyes from the world. Upon their first year of being a reaper, they are to attend a training facility to learn the basic rules of being a shinigami, and also to get familiar with their death scythes. Each shinigami is given a uniform that is made for each and every one of them respectively. Many don't wear it often, and instead adorn a mundane looking suit. ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏʙɪʟɪᴛʏ ᴀɴᴅ ʀᴏʏᴀʟᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Iᴢᴀɴᴀᴍɪ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Usually they're blocked in with the elves and fairy folk of the more fantasy forests within the underground. They don't like to converse with the other species, and rarely venture past the bounds of the underground forests. They like to keep a low profile and have their own caste system specific to them. They have a large population, and yet do not typically abide by the rules and restrictions of the other yokai, as they don't belong in that society. They caste by blood color. Each Alternian is born with a specific sign to symbolize their individuality. The lower caste span from rust to lime as low bloods, olive to cobalt as midbloods, and indigo to fuchsia as high bloods. The low bloods tend to farms and produce clothing and also try their best not to get killed by the higher ups. The mid bloods are nobles. The High bloods royalty. Though that's not always the case.Alternians are notoriously violent by nature. The low bloods are more prone to developing strong psychic powers but are almost never strong and are highly physically susceptible. The high bloods are always incredibly strong, but are highly susceptible mentally. And the mid bloods are a mix of both. Some are born strong with powers. Other unfortunates are born weak without powers. ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - Tʜᴇʏ ᴅᴏɴ·ᴛ ʙᴇʟᴏɴɢ ᴛᴏ ʏᴏᴋᴀɪ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Hᴀᴄʜɪᴍᴀɴ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Immune to the light spheres of the surface world with a penchant for drinking the blood of mortal creatures, Banshees are likely the most dangerous of the yokai species due to how volatile they tend to be. They're unpredictable in nature, seductive sometimes, downright hostile other times, letting out an immensely loud scream if they feel like they're in danger, of which disorients their target. They've certainly earned a name for themselves within Yokai society. However, there seems to be a two distinct types of Banshee. The Pure Blooded and the Mud Bloods. The pure blooded Banshees are of higher status, nobles and on occasion, actual royalty. While the mud blooded Banshees are far less respected, and are often times even slaves. However, Banshees are also known as the species of yokai that outright rejects a placement in society, going rogue and living on the surface world pretending to be human. ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ᴀɴʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Kʏᴏɴsʜɪ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Distant cousins to the Gozu, the Mamor, dubbed "Big Daddies" are an extremely dependent species of yokai that are intensely sensitive to sunlight, and sometimes even suffer minor burns from the spheres left by Amaterasu. They are immensely physically capable and unlike the Gozu, very well known for their above average intelligence, of which rivals the Ryuraijin. Most Mamor take an interest in inventing and are often mechanics, architects, and inventors in the yokai world. They are characterized by the heavy armor they wear on the surface, to hide themselves from the light, and to protect the Imasu. The Imasu are distant cousins to the Kawako and are far less sensitive to light than most, which assists them in luring in prey. They are usually quite young and are not known for their strength in the slightest. They are just as dependent, if not, more dependent than the Mamor, and rarely, if ever, leave the side of their "Big Daddies". Imasu are incredibly agile and swift, great at hiding and running from targets, especially humans. They can be found with the Mamor along No Man's Land or Nash Island. They are equipped with a syringe, of which they use to suck the blood out of the yokai or humans that they hunt, considering the both of them feed primarily on the blood of animals in general. The bond between the Mamor and the Imasu is vastly stronger than any that other yokai could even fathom. The Mamor are willing to die for the Imasu, they don't yell, they hardly speak for that matter, but the only emotion they will ever show towards the Imasu is compassion, mercy, care. But don't mistake them for gentle giants. The Mamor are especially violent towards those who provoke the Imasu, some pairs of Big Daddies and Little Sisters are hostile towards both human and yokai, and attack on sight, sometimes they'll even attack members of their own kind. They are considered some of the most dangerous yokai in the world. (Genders are not specific. Little brothers, Big Mommies, and whatever else you can think of are perfectly allowed) ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - Mᴀᴍᴏʀ ₈/₁₀ Iᴍᴀsᴜ ₂/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₈ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ᴀɴʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Jɪᴋᴀɴ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Essentially they're shapeshifters with varying psychic capabilities. Though not all are born with those abilities, and in fact some are powerless aside from the fact that they can shape shift. They can't shapeshift into anything larger than a fully grown gorilla but animals are usually they're expertise. They aren't usually hostile or feral in any way, and even have a good reputation in the yokai realm. Though they tend to lead a double life, sometimes they're two faced as well, lover by day, killer by night, they can be absolutely ruthless creatures. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₆/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₈ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ᴀɴʏ ʙᴇʟᴏᴡ ʀᴏʏᴀʟᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Kᴀɢᴀsᴇᴏ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Words are venomous, and the Kobura are literal examples of that. With a single touch, they could reduce a man to nothing but a shrivelled up ball of agony, curling into himself. And their bites could easily kill a human, and fatally wound another yokai. They can hypnotize their prey with a snake's tongue. And again, that's literal. They can shapeshift into snakes of varying sizes, and communicate with other snakes, often using them as messengers. They are considered the bounty hunters of the yokai world, and are hired mercenaries and assassins, exceedingly talented in areas of stealth. Though they aren't the best fighters, and strength wise, they're actually quite weak. They have snake like characteristics, often a forked tongue, slitted eyes, their habit to hiss at people they don't like. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₆/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ᴀɴʏ ʙᴇʟᴏᴡ ʀᴏʏᴀʟᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Nᴇᴍᴇsɪs ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Watch yourself in the darkest of places, for the shadows that lurk in your periphery might not be just a figment of your imagination. The Kagome are malicious spirits that feed off of the negative emotions within humans and other yokai and usually don't have the best intentions in mind. They're resented in yokai society because of their tendency to trick and con people out of money, or to downright terrify yokai children. They generally bring badluck with them, and can turn into literal shadows on the wall, thriving in the dark. They have one real weakness, light. Seriously just shine a flashlight on them and they can't get too close in their shadow form, it's also kinda irritating to have a light shined in your eyes. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₆/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₅ ᴛᴏ ₈ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ᴀɴʏ ʙᴇʟᴏᴡ ʀᴏʏᴀʟᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - ᴍɪᴋᴀʙᴏsʜɪ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ

Harpies and Nepras are the oldest known yokai, surpassing even the Ryuraijin in their age and their notoriety. Historically, the Harpies were created before the development of Kuro. They were messengers for the gods, but were put down onto Kuro during the war between the gods. The Harpies have a skewed reputation but because they have such a limited population, with dwindling numbers, many just don't know what kind of people they are in general. Their powers range from exceedingly strong necromancy to sprouting a pair of wings, but unlike the Jibril's wings, theirs are pure white. Though sometimes, they can be black. And if they're black, the Harpy is shunned from the yokai society. You see, during the war between humans and yokai, when the yokai were forced underground, some Harpies took the human's side and helped them in secret. These Harpies were considered traitorous, and thus their wings turned a coal color, shimmering slightly under the light. But overall, all Harpies within the yokai realm are without a shadow of a doubt, royalty. They have lived for far too long to not have earned the respect of each of the kingdoms. Most of the time they are princes and princesses, refusing to rule as anything else. They are pampered because of what power they harbor. Well, some of them anyways. Some harpies can call upon an ancient god of the undead. Some harpies can shift into a gruesome bird like monster almost as large as a dragon. They can grow their hands into sharp clawlike talons. They can throw people to the ground and attack them with their wings, which can be absolutely massive.Or they could be the weakest yokais you've ever met. Yokai born of the anger and malice of the most recent war, the result of an experiment gone wrong to create soulless yokai that can never die in battle. They have no souls. They are empty husks, walking on land with an insatiable craving for the lifeforce of others, be this blood, flesh, or the spirit within, they will slither into your life with sweet words coated in velvet. Happy dreams, good luck. Often times they soothe their victims into a false sense of security before ripping their souls out. They are the biggest enemies to the Shinigami, as they specifically look for those who will die soon, just so they can snatch those souls from time, and defy the goddess Izanami. Coincidentally, they also cause the most Shinigami casualties and can be quite hostile towards just about any other yokai that gets in their way. They are seen as lower class citizens and no one really enjoys their presence because they have a very sinister aura about them. They aren't supposed to exist. They aren't supposed to feel the warmth of the air or the skin on their fingertips. Life isn't for them. And so they ruthlessly try to fill the void within them by collecting the souls of the living, of which only fade into nothingness shortly after consumption. It's like a drug for them. But not all demons blindly taste every low quality soul they come by. Some prefer the finer dishes life can offer, and go after nobles, sparking a Faustian Contract with them. Two souls bound together until the requirements have been met. At that point, the demon will take the soul of the noble, or whoever created the contract. And funnily enough, demons have emotions. Plenty. Maybe moreso. But are seen as emotionless beings of deceit and deception. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₅/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₂ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ ɪɴ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ;; sʜᴜɴɴᴇᴅ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀ ɢᴏᴅ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ(view spoiler)[Heavily inspired by Black Butler (hide spoiler)]
One of the few human born yokai, Wendigos are cannibalistic in nature with twisted morals that are often a bit sick in the head. As a human, they had been forced into a situation where they had no other way of surviving, either eat the flesh of another, or die completely. And in doing so, they sacrificed their humanity, and a little bit of their sanity, and became something more. Faster, stronger, not human. They stalk the woods of the Districts and are more prevalent on the surface due to their tendencies to feed on humans. Sometimes they'll even eat yokai. They have absolutely no qualms with what they're eating, as long as they stop the insatiable hunger eating away at them. They're almost always hungry as well, predators instinctively, others to them are prey. They did not choose to be this kind of monster though. Many were helpless, naturally fighting to survive against all odds. Others were drawn into the packs of wendigo that plague some of the outer forests, where Amaterasu's light cannot reach. Wendigos are known to select people and drag them into their caves to create more of their kind. They are vampiric in nature, and can grow claws and large canines without much of a struggle. Occasionally they have animal like features as well, antlers of sorts, darkened skin like coal, slitted eyes. Their appearances vary from individual to individual, but unlike other yokai, they are actually very pack driven, they live in packs of wendigos, even having an alpha and a beta, sometimes an omega. They hunt in packs as well, sharing meals, playing with one another. Curiously enough, they refuse to eat each other. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₈/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₂ ᴛᴏ ₈ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - sʟᴀᴠᴇs ᴛᴏ ᴍɪᴅᴅʟᴇ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Kᴀɢᴀsᴇᴏ ᴀɴᴅ Hᴏᴍᴜʀᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
The sons and daughters of a mortal and a god, the Runewalkers bare the burden of keeping their powers at bay and struggling relentlessly to act normal, despite their disposition. The heavens call to them but they cannot fly, for they have no wings. Just the remnants of what might have been. They do not belong on Kuro, they belong with the other gods, roaming the universe. Their bodies are covered in runes, ancient symbols inscribed by the deities themselves. A lot of the time, the respective god that fathers or mothers them does not even visit, leaving them to suffer where they exist without purpose or meaning. Struggling to fit into the world around them. Many times their livelihood is threatened by the Elite Unit, if they happen to be half humans. Often hunted for their abilities, brainwashed into servitude. If they're yokai they might be hunted for their beauty as slaves, considering trafficking is so popular in the yokai realm, and they happen to be perfect individuals with beautiful markings upon their skin. But there are the rare few that make it big in the world and overcome their confusion, their sensitivity. Their powers vary, based on the respective god and yokai. ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₂ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ ɪɴ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀ ɢᴏᴅ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
All of the major famines in the world have been the result of an Oni tampering with human life. Typically despised by both humans and yokai alike, Oni do nothing but spread plague and sickness. Their touch does not immediately effect the afflicted, but given time the victim would experience the symptoms before falling sickly ill. They cause great misfortune and there are very few that are immune to their harmful side effects. No one can really stick around them too long, which makes them loners, hiding in the darkest corners of the world. They are yokai that cause mischief and chaos, and sometimes their skin takes on different hues and colors for no particular reason. The most identifiable being green. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₄/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₂ ᴛᴏ ₈ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ ɪɴ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - ᴀɴᴀʟɪᴇsᴇ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Once upon a time there was a girl from a land of open fields and a beaming sun. A girl who'd barely seen nine summers and who spent her days picking petals from flowers. Pink and blue and purple, they all fell down and were swept away by the gentle blow of the wind. But some remained. Some fell to the ground unnoticed, and there they lay until they crumpled into nothing and faded into the earth, absorbed by the vast expanse, never to be remembered. And like one of those petals, she was picked from her family by an unknown killer, the first of his kind. He stole her away into the night and deflowered her roses, leaving her petals scattered. No one came to claim her soul, no one came to save her from her nightmare. The wind did not sweep her off her feet into a wonderland. But she did not fade into the void either. She was a strong girl, and her heart was bold. She was found the next day by a boy of eleven winters. And her warmth latched onto him. And she became the first familiar.Familiars are spirits uncollected by a reaper, be they yokai or human, that have latched their souls onto another mortal, or immortal. The connection is involuntary but the strength of it varies. Some have extremely strong connections, so that both of them can see through the other's eyes, can flip through their memories. Others have a weak connection that flickers from time to time, but that in general is rare. Many familiars have a spirit animal that represents them, one that they can shapeshift into for higher mobility, and they follow their chosen conduit in either a tangible or intangible specter form. They cannot be too far from their chosen conduit, otherwise the connection will sever and their soul will fade into the void forever. Humans with familiars are often kidnapped by the Elite Unit, taken in to be used by the government and turned into cyborgs due to their psychic abilities and connections with their familiars. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₀/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₂ ᴛᴏ ₇ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ ɪɴ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀ ɢᴏᴅ ▾⋮ ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ - ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Born of two differing yokai parents, a hybrid is seen as little more than a genetic anomaly. Sometimes, but rarely, hybrids are acceptable. In cases of royalty producing hybrid children, there usually isn't much public outrage. But in the case of lower ranking yokai, they're often seen as mudbloods, straying from their species. As yokai are a very competitive breed of mortals as it stands. They are just a little more respected than the osakabe, of whom are completely shunned by society regardless of where they are (most of the time anyways). As such, most hybrids desperately try to hide their own identity from the world. Some even hide from the world altogether. It's important to acknowledge which yokai are being mated together during character creation, and the culture they're being subjected to as they grow and learn. If the yokai happen to be a ryuraijin and a gozu for instance, then the offspring might just be a glorified ryuraijin who's stronger and more aggressive in their human form. If they happen to be a banshee and an okami, they might be wolves that happen to drink blood and scream really loud. Or perhaps the offspring just didn't win the genetic lottery and simply don't have any powers whatsoever, born "defective". Take into account what rank they are, as the ranking varies greatly from hybrid to hybrid, most being slaves and lower class, very rarely being royalty. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₄/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₂ ᴛᴏ ₁₀ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ ɪɴ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - ᴡʜɪᴄʜᴇᴠᴇʀ ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴄʜᴏᴏsᴇ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ ﹙ᴜɴʟᴇss ʙᴏᴛʜ ᴘᴀʀᴇɴᴛs ᴀʀᴇ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛᴀʙʟᴇs﹚
During The Great Divide, Nocturna, The Goddess of Protection and Wisdom, created a species of yokai that would act as guardians to the chosen few. Nocturna never took the chosen's rank in society into consideration, their orientation, their race. It was never about how they looked. It was about whether or not they needed help. She pities both humans and yokai, and she shapes these yokai with gentle care, cautiously crafting them to fit the need of the ones she chooses. In this way, the Kyu are guardian angels. They know nothing but what they were born to do, and that is to protect. They have no other purpose, and so they protect, and they protect vigilantly. With vigorous strength and abundant amounts of energy, they're willing to lose their life for their chosen one. But because of the fact that they are usually quite young (but physically at the peak of their maturity, so mid twenties), they can be rather innocent minded. They are usually unrealistically optimistic, and at times, painfully ignorant and oblivious to the world around them. So they can be manipulated, turned into weapons by their chosen ones. It's sad but it happens from time to time. Most are equipped with a pair of wings by the way. ▾⋮ ʟɪɢʜᴛ sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠɪᴛʏ - ₄/₁₀ ▾⋮ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀ - ₂ ᴛᴏ ₇ ▾⋮ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ɴᴏ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ ɪɴ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ▾⋮ ᴡᴏʀsʜɪᴘᴇᴅ ɢᴏᴅ - Nᴏᴄᴛᴜʀɴᴀ ▾⋮ ᴀᴠᴀɪʟᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ - ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇϙᴜᴇsᴛ
Each species of yokai often times worships their own specific deity. Those deities were the first beings to exist, and have a certain influence on the universe that could easily be considered godlike. Often times, they make the big decisions on what happens in the world (natural disasters, catastrophes, strokes of luck). Whether or not the intervene on specific situations is entirely up to each deity. Some deities are stronger than others. If you want to make them male or female that is completely up to you, I don't mind gender fluid gods or agender gods.
The god of yokai, often considered, the god of all gods. He'd probably be the most powerful if his influence weren't so rivaled by Amaterasu. Not much is known about him other than the fact that he thrives in the dark and that he is highly revered and incredibly powerful. He also has his own pocket realm called "The Void", one that has been protected to swallow up all life one day, in a catastrophic event that will end the universe.
The goddess of light and everything beautiful. The goddess of all gods, sometimes referred to as the queen of gods. Once upon a time, before her sudden disappearance, she was the very sun in the sky, and controlled the way the plants grew and how many grew at one time in certain places. She was constantly worshiped as the one true goddess, her temples were everywhere and her blessings were plentiful.
The god of harvest and fortune, heavily worshiped by Kitsunes. He is said to be a bit more of a standoffish type god that doesn't intervene in mortal affairs often, but brings good luck and fortune to those who happen to catch a glimpse of him. He seems to find interest in those unfortunate types those, in hopes that he can guide them to fortune. Though his personality is unknown, he has few temples on the outskirts of the city.
The goddess of water and oceans, said to be hopelessly in love with Homura at one point in her life. She is ruthlessly money hungry and merciless in her path to succeed, considered one of the more powerful of gods, she's often depicted with fins or an aquatic tail of some sort, covered in jewels and gold, adorning the most expensive attire.
The god of the moon, worshiped by two species of yokai and even some humans. While his influence varies depending on where you are in the world, Tsu is a very important god as he controls the cycles of the moon and in turn, the waves of the oceans. His sister is Amemasu.
The god of forgery and strength. Their personality is unknown, their intents are unknown, and they only seem to intervene when it benefits them. They wear a dark shroud to hide their identity and their gender. They aren't particularly powerful, but are believed to have a lot influence in the political world.
The goddess of nature and dreams who is often depicted as that of ill intent. Her motivations are definitely questionable as she has associated with both evil and good gods. She has a soft spot for children in specific, and enjoys giving people nightmares.
The daughter of Calypso and Karasu, the product of a one night fling. She is the goddess of archery and music, often revered by scholars of both human and yokai alike, revered by those seeking knowledge and moral wisdom.
One of the eldest, wisest gods, Fujin is quiet and reserved and avoids much social contact. He takes to the skies, and enjoys being at impressive heights rather than keeping himself on the ground. He once took an interest in Salacia, but after being thoroughly denied by her mother, Calypso, he decided not to associate himself with any of the other gods.. or anyone in general. He is VERY favorable towards his dragons however. His Ryuraijin, of which he is incredibly fond of. The god of storms.
Izanami is easily one of the most antisocial goddesses there is. She's quiet, reserved, and extremely cautious, but cherishes her reapers lovingly. She is said to take an interest in the dark arts, black magic and arcane tombs. She is the goddess of death and also- rebirth. Her dealings are with the creatures of which reap the souls from others. Her responsibility is to collect the souls of those humans who have committed suicide, and remake them into her reapers. Out of all of the gods, even Homura, Izanami is the most just, and is said to be the best at giving moral advice.
The god of war, Hachiman is known to be especially violent and impulsive. He's had many consorts over the years and tends to be a bit promiscuous. He has a very bad temper, especially against men. But he's the best fighter out of all of the gods and specializes in nearly every area of combat, from guns and knives to martial arts. He's always at the front lines of war.
The most seductive of the goddesses and also, a lesser known deity. But do not mistake lesser known for less powerful, Kyonshi is a force to be reckoned with. She knows how to get her way, she's conniving and most commonly depicted as an evil spirit. She is the goddess of blood and responsibility. Blood not only meaning actual blood, but the bonds between people. She knows how to break them, or how to make them, probably gives the best relationship advice as well. She's also coincidentally an excellent healer, and studies several areas of old time medicine.
An eccentric among the gods, Jikan rules over time, aristocracy, and music. His species of yokai are reclusive in nature, just like himself. Though he's not just a distant god, some believe him to be clinically insane, which could be reflected in the MamorImasu yokai. He is currently the only god with duel yokai, which is a blatant connection to his duel personality. Sometimes he's good, sometimes he's evil, sometimes he's charming, sometimes he's an absolute terror.
The God of Chaos and the Cosmos, Kagaseo is often described as extremely volatile in nature, willing to be charming and generous when it suits him, but other times he'll lash out and even start world wars with his influence on the humans for fun. Which is why the gods have banned him from conversing with humans. But he doesn't really care. The former lover of Jikan, and the "killer" of Amaterasu. He has her caged up on Polaris, his hellish star kingdom.
The God of Knowledge and Agriculture, Kobi, as many have come to call him, is very devoted to his studies and has a need to know just about anything. His weakness is his insatiable hunger for information, and he is best friends with Homura. He doesn't necessarily associate with any of the gods, and is much more interested in human affairs, as humans are typically more interesting.
The God of Evil, Mika is a trickster god in every sense of the word and will purposely go out of the way to harm others. While he is banned from directly hurting humans, he often misleads them and tempts them into destruction. His species of yokai are the most malicious.
The Goddess of Revenge and Hatred. Nemesis has a pair of coal black wings and piercing eyes. Her species of yokai are the bounty hunters of the yokai world, paid mercenaries, merciless creatures with a penchant for getting back at their foes.
The Goddess of Peace and Tranquility. She is known to have a soft spot for children in particular, and spends her time blessing those who do acts of kindness upon others. She was the most effected by Amaterasu's death, as she was very close to the goddess.
The Goddess of the Undead and the Necromancy. One of the darker gods, less liked by the others. She's a bit of a loner and spends her times conjuring animals from the dead, using their bones as conduits. Despite what others might think, she is not evil, and has no intent on harming anyone.
The Goddess of the Elements. But most just call her the Queen of Bloodthirst. She enjoys watching her many suitors fight to the death for her and is worshiped specifically by those who enjoy battle over sensitivity. She doesn't associate with many of the gods. She likes to keep to herself, but was on the front lines during the war between the gods. She's a younger goddess. She is most worshipped by the Oni.
The God of Cons and Stealth, to Atlas, shadows are refuge. Silence is the music of life. Often revered by assassins and darker yokai alike, Atlas is a mysterious god who's personality has yet to be unveiled in the long time that he's lived. He's often followed by a black dog or cat, and is heavily associated with nighttime.
The Goddess of Sickness and Venom, Ana is one of the younger goddesses who's really earned a name for herself by betraying all of her friends in the world and basically landing the final blow on Amaterasu. She's really great, when your back isn't turned to her. Often depicted as a snake, Ana doesn't often make real, sincere bonds with people, she makes expendable connections. Her species is the Oni, and rightfully so.
The Goddess of Protection and Wisdom, Nocturna is likely one of the most revered of the gods, the mom of the god squad. She's very loving and caring and tries her best to make people around her happy. She was around during the war but refused to take part in it. Aiding both sides equally.
Lesser gods that do not have species associated with them. Many are very young, and weren't there at the time of the war, and thus don't know what happened to Amaterasu. No one speaks about her anymore. Not after her devastating death.
The Goddess of Earth and Direction, she's often depicted as a siren, assisting lost sailors or people who have forgotten their way. Said to be loving, beautiful, and divine. She rarely shows her face to the other gods, and takes more of an interest in humans.
The God of Wisdom and Wind, Roku is often accompanied by a black deer. It is said that in their times of need, he'll come to warriors on the battle field and tend to their wounds. His motives are unknown and his personality is also equally mysterious. He is very attune with nature, and spends most of his time in forests. He's sometimes dubbed the God of Philosophy.
The Goddess of Purity and Innocence. Not necessarily sexuality wise specifically, but in cleanliness and naivety. She's probably the most childish of the gods, and can be a snob from time to time. She's also one of the younger gods as well, and is quite attractive. She has a special hatred in her heart for those that cheat on their partners. Her powers are more illusionary, and she can summon light, but not like Amaterasu, her light isn't permanent and can't be used as energy.
The God of Nature and the Hunt, a wild soul who enjoys the exciting aspects of life, said to be able to shapeshift into different animals and communicate with them as well. Being around him just fills you with energy and he's highly skilled in areas of archery and sport. He's a lively god, sometimes mistaken for Inari due to his deep connection with kitsunes and foxes in general.
The God of Pride and Honor, often considered Amaterasu's right hand man, before she disappeared that is. He is deeply hurt that she lost the war, and often feels it's his fault the goddess did not survive. He's the healer of the gods.
The Goddess of beauty, lust, and fertility. She's unsurprisingly promiscuous. She was around when the war broke out between the elder gods and the new age. Though she didn't actually fight because she doesn't necessarily like fighting. She a lover honey <3
Otherwise known as actual satan spawn, Malakath had a very trying upbringing. He was a troublesome child, the son of Kagaseo and an unknown female goddess, he is known as the god of rage and volatility. Often affiliated with mental patients and asylums.
These apply to both yokai and humans, though humans use the rank system a bit more than the yokai do, probably because the yokai have a more defined caste system, whereas humans have the right to move up and down the classes that they have. Both the yokai and humans have these. Though human kings and queens are a lot more like overseers than the yokai kings and queens. Just a general breakdown of the species roles in society, how they're regarded by others, their expectations, jobs, positions. An extension of their respective descriptions if you will. This will be built upon as time goes on. The said yokai are not limited to their expectations in society, and they do not have to abide by their own social standards. Many do not in the group.
