Ch 4 - (view spoiler)[ This relationship with the Red Queen is strange. I feel like her personality has been altered a bit from book 2 to book 3. Somehow she is not as cold/evil, not sure if it is because of Kelsea dredging up her old memories, or if the author just couldn't maintain the personality and accomplish what she needed to with this character. -- One thing for certain is that she and Kelsea have a common enemy and should really get going on defeating Row. Those children of Row's are super creepy! And even though the Red Queen and Kelsea have kind of teamed up finally, they sure haven't solved any real problems yet. Speaking of Row, he seems evil from birth. Katie seems to see it too, yet she still holds out feelings for him. I don't get it. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 13 - (view spoiler)[ What a let down the Fetch character has been!!! I had such high hopes in the first book. Now he is nothing to me.

I'm not sure what the purpose of bringing back Kelsea's mother serves. Kelsea just reaffirmed what an idiot her mother was, and the truth about her father could have come out some other way. It wasn't really explained how he ended up with Tear blood. Perhaps we aren't done with that storyline yet?? (hide spoiler)]

Finished - (view spoiler)[ Wow, so this series did NOT turn out to be what I was expecting. Instead of story about a girl who comes to power to right the wrongs of the monarchs before her using her magic and a good heart, it turned out to be a story about socialism and other political issues like the role of women in society. I was not prepared for those aspects to be the real focus. I didn't even get a good love interest (of course, what does that say about my ideals of the roles of women if I'm upset she doesn't end up with a man at the end??)

Did I like the series? I guess so. I can't shake the feeling that the transitions between books are strange. In book one, I really felt that this series was going to be another fantasy with magic and love and right vs. wrong. There was a little politics (the wrongness of slavery, a little of the abuse of women in society), but the book seemed to still focus on the girl and her struggles to rule and learn the magic that she possessed. It was a little more "adult" in content (language especially), but I guess I thought it would follow the same path as many books in the YA fantasy genre.

Starting in Book 2, we got more of a taste of the political commentary. The brutality against women was a main theme. While Kelsea got to see all of that through the use of her magic, the book definitely shifted towards the political and away from your basic fantasy novel. Book 3 tried to recapture a little of the magic through the actions of a few characters, but the book felt more like a political lesson than a fantastic read.
