Secrets Between Friends by Fiona Palmer Secrets Between Friends by Fiona Palmer

Jess saw Peter first, she would recognise him in any crowd with his height and surfie good looks. Beside him sat Abbie, long black hair cascading down her back. They were chatting on one of the island seats in the shopping centre waiting for her to join them. Jess was always a clock watcher and arrived early if not on time. That was until she'd had Ollie; now she was simply grateful to actually turn up to things. She glanced at Ollie on her hip as she strode along trying not to think of how long her friends had been waiting. Ollie held up his hand - slightly sticky from leftover breakfast she must have missed - and placed it on her face.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 10006 comments I am old.
That is the first thing to tell you. The thing you are least likely to believe. If you saw me you would probably think I was about forty, but you would be wrong.
I am old - old in the way that a tree, or a quahog clam, or a Renaissance painting is old.
To give you an idea: I was born well over four hundred years ago on the third of March 1581, in my parents' room, on the third floor of a small French chateau that used to be my home. It was a warm day, apparently, and my mother had asked her nurse to open all the windows.
'God smiled on you,' my mother said. Though I think she might have added that - should He exist - the smile has been a frown ever since.

Li'l Owl | 2504 comments "And I was surprised, and a bit dismayed, by the subservient attitude everyone had to Inskip, at least to his face; my own men treated me at home with far more familiarity. The fact that I paid and they earned gave me no rights over them as men, and this we all clearly understood. But at Inksips, and all throughout England, I gradually realized, there was far less of the almost aggressive egalitarianism of Australia. The lads on the whole, seemed to accept that in the eyes of the world they were of secondary importance as human beings to Inskip and October. I thought this extraordinary, undignified, and shameful. And I kept my thoughts to myself."

There was a definite pause between her hello and the lady saying, "Yes, I'm here, Mrs Desmarchelliers."

Frankie heard the laughter infect the woman's voice.

Sally906 | 91 comments My teaser is from Three Sisters, Three Queens (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels, #8) by Philippa Gregory Three Sisters, Three Queens by Philippa Gregory

This teaser comes just after Katherine of Aragon is married to Arthur. His sister Margaret is a horribly vain little princess (is 12 at this point) she takes an instant dislike to Katherine – calls her Katherine of Arrogant – which is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black!

When I get to my room I kneel at my prie-dieu and, though I meant to pray for Arthur’s long life and happiness, and remind God of his special debt to the Tudors, I find I can only pray that the Scottish ambassadors tell their king to send for me at once, for I want a wedding feast as grand as this one, and a wardrobe of clothes as good as Katharine of Arrogant’s, and shoes – hundreds of pairs of shoes and every one of them will have embroidered toes and gold laces. My prayer is answered, for God always listens to the prayers of the Tudors, and the king of Scotland orders his ambassadors to negotiate with my father’s advisors.

"‘This is a femur,’ she said, quietly, as Travis entered the tent. She took a pencil from behind her ear, and pointed at the rounded ball shape at one end. ‘This is the fovea capitis, and down here is the medial condyle and…’ ‘Doctor A, I know what a femur is, and I would expect to find two here so why the fascination?’ Kim asked, impatiently. ‘Because, Inspector, this is femur number three.’ ‘I’m sorry, Doctor, but what exactly are you saying?’ Travis asked, unnecessarily. The doctor didn’t hide her irritation as she spelled it out. ‘What I’m saying, Inspector, is that unless Lesley had more than two legs, we are dealing with a second victim.’"

I'm about to start my next read - Odd Child Out by Gilly Macmillan Odd Child Out by Gilly Macmillan - here are the opening words :)

A black ribbon of water cuts through the city of Bristol, under the cold midnight sky. Reflections of street lighting float and warp on its surface.

On one side of the canal there's a scrapyard, where heaps of crumpled metal glisten with frost. Opposite is an abandoned red brick warehouse. Its windows are unglazed and pigeons nest on the ledges.

"It was a tight little gang of street urchins, rambling along the canal path, who discovered the body of Usha Pramal. At first they aimed stones at the globe of coloured silk that ballooned from the green slime of city water, and then they thought they would use a broken tree branch to haul it in. It was only as they hooked the fabric that the body turned, the face rising in the misery of sudden death, the dead woman's eyes open as if not quite understanding why there was a raw place on her forehead where a bullet had entered her skull."
